Happened this weekend right in Sue Creek. Boat was fueling and then caught on fire. No one injured. Don't know what might have caused it, everyone got off the boat and they pushed it away from the fuel dock. That open flag is the fuel dock. It was a nice day and there is always a lot of traffic there. Added traffic was our weekend cruise headed back into port, about 16 boats.

Quick response by the emergency responders, but the fire spread really fast. Lucky they were able to get it away from the pier.

I googled and did not find any news articles on it. Seems like this happened in August of 2013 too!!

"Beware the Ides of August"

Tough loss for sure.

That was a heads up call to cut the boat loose. In another marina, that could have created a bigger disaster. At least in this case......the damage was limited.

I think pushing the boat off the dock is protocol in situations like this.

This is why when I fuel up, I turn off EVERYTHING, close all hatches and make all passengers go ashore. When I'm done filling up, I open everything up, smell the bilge with my own nose, and then turn on the blowers. I then go pay my bill and get everyone back on board and we head out. I get some dirty looks from other boaters, but who cares.

Sounds like a good plan especially if canvas is in place or loaded with people..... everyone can just do a shore bathroom run while boat is being fueled.
