CSR Northeast Flotilla 2017

Our plans are a bit more solid now, and so we will be staying overnight in Cuttyhunk, Wednesday, August 1st, and then heading to Block Island early Thursday morning, Aug 2nd.
We plan to raft with the group in the great salt pond until Sunday.

As of now, I know of a few folks that might be doing a night in Cuttyhunk before Block, just not sure if we're all on the same day(s).
I think the following CSR members are planning on a Cutty stop:
(JGREN) James and Meghan on Seagrenity
(LATAGA) Dean and Tammy on Arrr & Arrr
(IRIE 308)

I see (TLYNCH99) Tom and Pamela are listed on the list as coming from Boston, so maybe they might want to also join us Wednesday night before making the run to Block Island.

We can raft on a town mooring in Cutty or grab slips there, it looks like they have plenty on Dockwa at this point. If I talk to the Harbormaster we can grab a few together if people would like that?

Looking forward to the trip!

Ron, we plan on staying in Cuttyhunk Mon and Tues but departing Wednesday am to meet up with the raft in Block. So we may miss the raft in CH.

Yeah, unfortunately we're going to miss day 1 in Block due to some other scheduling. Please don't eat everything from the Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms boat before we get there! The cherry stones, chowder, and their stuffed quahogs. Yummm.

Thanks for the feedback Alex. We were leaning toward Champlain's. However the idea of being rafted at the marina when we have the kids and dog on the boat sounds less then ideal.

I will call Chamllain's tomorrow to ask how much room they anticipate having and I will call the scooter rental places too and inquire about the options there too.

Is anyone here planning on staying at Champlain's.

My status for next weekend at SI has been downgraded to questionable. Yesterday we were coming back from a day trip in Essex, CT and my stbd engine started to overheat. They usually are at 185* at cruise, and yesterday the stbd hit 195* at cruise (or just a tick below 200*). I haven't had a chance to look into it yet, but will dive into it tomorrow. Impellers are new as of April. I'm not sure what else it can be. I'll be posting a separate thread on CSR looking for suggestions. :( Hopefully I can get it straightened out because I really want to go.

BTW, suss1173, if you want to be at a marina at Block, but don't want to be rafted with other boats, then Boat Basin is the only place to go. (It's the only place I would go if I didn't anchor out.)

During previous flotilla's, how have folks handled generator usage? I raft up with folks for the day a lot, but rafting up for a few days is going to certainly require some meaningful generator time to keep the house bank happy. I'm sure if it's in the 80's some might want to hit the a/c at times too?

When we're rafted up for the day, nobody runs the generator to avoid the exhaust smell and blower noise. We generally just kick on the generator if we need the blender to deal with an emergency need for Mudslides, otherwise I can keep the fridges and stereo happy with just the 2 battery Group 31 house bank. If I'm at Block from Thursday thru Sunday I'm going to have to run it for several hours each day probably. How have people handled that in the past?

most people run for a couple of hours in the morning then again for a couple of hours in the evening.....this generally gives people a chance to cook, run the hot water heater, use the hairdrier and top up the batteries - the wind is generally consistent and the raft does not throw stern anchors so no worries on the fumes......i have never needed ac on block island.....the bigger boats that have ac only appliances may need to run the gen more often......not sure

Ron,

Mike's response covers the basic approach, which works quite often. With gas boats you have to be more cautious due to elevated CO level, compare to diesel boats. The wind and how the raft is positioned to the wind are the key factors. Depending on the size of the raft and what wind is doing, we may use stern anchors (we do it quite often).

There were rare occasions when the wind was very light during evening hours and one or gas boats have triggered CO detectors in rafted next to them boats.

In general, this has not been an issue. There are number of ways to solve this. So, we'll just play it by ear and make necessary adjustments as we go. As long as we're all being understanding and flexible, and work together, we'll be fine.

Pam will take care of food next week, but I have started to "provision" key supplies for Block Island also:

Think of it as a key first aid component if we need to kill any pain out there...

Looking forward to the raft in Block! We had a nice run from Newport to Edgartown yesterday. The Vineyard is definitely a beautiful stop. It's too bad we didn't make it as a group last year. Ran through woods hole...can't say that time didn't stand still for a few minutes. Just a bit of a pucker factor the first time through with heavy boat traffic.

That is a nice run from Newport and Woods hole will do that too you. I have run it hundreds of times and still find myself second guessing myself as I go through and take a look over at the chart. Enjoy Edgartown, it is a great spot.

That's always an interesting run through Woods Hole. Living across Buzzards Bay from it, we do it frequently now to get to the Vineyard, but even with familiarity, I still try to go thru near slack tide, it's just a lot easier. Hadley's Harbor is a good place to hang out (on the Buzzards Bay side) if it's a bad tide when you get to the hole. You're right about the boat traffic, it seems like boats are converging from all directions to this one passage, and at least half have no concept of rules of the road. To go along with it, you have people out there in kayaks crossing the channel, and fishing boats hanging just outside the channel casting for striped bass in the white water.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had some time to do some research today, and it seems Champlain's is going to be the best option for us while traveling with the kids.

With some luck, they will put us stern to the floating dock and that will be much easier with the dog and kids. However they said they can't promis anything and it "first come first serve". So we'll keep our fingers crossed that we can be at the floating dock. If anyone else is planning to stay at Champlain's and would like to be rafted to us, please PM me so we can try to cordnate.

What time of day is the group planning departing from Sag to Block?

Alex, did the bike trip plans get finalized? Is it going to be Friday or Saturday?

Folks,

Due to the approaching weather we're making alternative plans and skipping Westneck and Sag Harbor. I'll see you in Block.

Jeremy,
No, we haven't finalized the bike trip yet. It looks as people need more time to respond. We still have time, but it would be good to get this closed in the next few days.

Is anyone else planing to stay at Champlain's?

Also, what are the groups plans for leavening Sag to Block. If I can time it right, I'd like to follow the group, as this is our first trip to block.

Alex, are you going straight from home to BI? We've been at MYC since Friday and am heading to BIBB Thursday after fueling up. We will dinghy out to see you guys or stop by if you come in to the Oar. Safe travels.

We'll be heading to Cuttyhunk tomorrow morning, and then BI on Thursday morning. I know a lot of plans were in flux. Is anyone else planning on running from Cutty to BI Thursday? We'll be in a slip at Cutty Wednesday night according to the Admiral. Look for the Soggy Dollar pirate flag and you'll find us ;)
See everyone else in the raft at BI Thursday.

Unfortunately we are out as of now. Starboard motor decided it didn't want to start when i went to fuel up and get ready for tomorrows trip. Hope we get this resolved and can head to block. What i know is, the motor is a 2001 mercruiser 5.7efi. I can see the injectors are not sending fuel to the throttlebody when im attemting to start the motor. Its def a fuel issue. Anyone go down this road?

Swinging on a mooring now in Cuttyhunk. Shredded a brand new impeller that was new this season on the genny. Swapped out my spare and shredded that as well. It sure why but I think it bound up on startup.Fortunately I still had last seasons so back up and running. Hope to find a new spare in Block. What time is everyone arriving tomorrow?

Ron, sorry but the raw bar ran out..lol
