We brainstormed a bit regarding both options and feel that Montauk presents more challenges for the group that's rafted. Dinghy landing is an issue and getting to the town requires a cab ride. None of this is an issue in Sag. We could build a raft in the larger anchorage right behind the seawall and have front row views on megayachts. As long as the weather cooperates, it's a great location for the raft. The town is a short dinghy ride with dedicated dinghy dock.

Who has folding tables and is willing to volunteer to bring them?

We have two option for 2nd port, Sag harbor or Montauk. Any thoughts/preferences one over the other? I'm leaning toward Montauk.

I have one folding table that I can bring to the feast.
 
Unfortunately due to possible changes in our schedule and itinerary, and a generator that is leaking oil badly, we may not be able to make the trip I was hoping to make. Alex, I think it is best that you ask someone else to bring the paper goods for the feast. I would feel horrible if everyone relies on me to bring them and it turns out that we can't make it.

I am trying to do what I can to at least get to Shelter Island for a couple of days when the official Flotilla starts, but due to work commitments we will need to leave early Sunday to get home by Sunday night. I am also hoping that we can spend the week starting July 22nd cruising around the City and into Long Island Sound, but I am not sure yet.

On the generator front: Recently the generator (Kohler 5E - 2010 model with 1240 hours) has been showing signs of a leak. I have been getting oil in the base pan and into the bilge. During the Memorial Day weekend she ran for about 20 hours then shut down due to low oil level. I found signs of a valve cover gasket leak and changed the gaskets. I thought that solved the problem, but the next full day on the boat resulted in the generator shutting down after only 4 hours of run time with more oil in the base pan and bilge. I now believe I have isolated the problem to a bad crankshaft oil seal. I see signs of oil behind the flywheel and splatter marks around the perimeter of the flywheel. I am HOPING that the crankshaft oil seal between the motor and the generator assembly is not leaking also. I don't see any sign of oil from there but have ordered a new seal, just in case. The seals are all of $3.00 and $5.00 but needed to be ordered from the factory as no one stocked them, because I was told, "we have never had to have one replaced." They should be in by the middle of next week. I have my fingers crossed...... wish me luck!
 
Just got our boat back today and ran home to check this thread...too far West for us this year, maybe next year you'll hit the cape or islands

Sorry to hear that Harold. I hope your schedule opens up so you can make it at least to the weekend in SI, and the genny is fixed on time.
 
We're still planning on joining the group at Block Island for the second weekend, arriving Wednesday or Thursday.

I think we'll be doing a day at Cuttyhunk before we head over. Then we'll get up early and head across from the end of the Elizabeth Islands to the Block in the morning before the sound gets all stirred up. I think there were a couple of other boats from "the east" that were thinking of doing something similar? If that's still the case, let's make a list and do a pre-game raft on a town mooring in Cuttyhunk pond the night before the run to Block Island. We can get the Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farm boat to deliver some fresh oysters, stuffies, shrimp, chowder, etc... to our group.

Having never had the opportunity to hook up with the group before we're looking forward to putting some faces to all the great suggestions and tips we've found here. (We tried last year, but weather kept the flotilla from the Vineyard and Hyannis.)

Run,

Our current plan is to be in Block Wednesday to Sunday. Once we settled with the raft of those that come at the same time or close to it, most likely my VHF will be off. There's way too much chatter usually on 69. So, your best bet is calling my cell. Do you have my number? If you don't, I can PM you.

Note to anyone who's arriving at different time from everyone else. Communication is the key. We ask you to contact in advance so we can have someone at the raft give you a hand to tie up safe and sound. So, please give us advanced noticed so we can plan accordingly. What we'd like to avoid is having boats come to raft up in a middle of the day while the group is out on the island and no one is at the raft to assist.

We ended up taking a two weeker so our plans have changed a bit. We plan on making a run to MV staying in Edgartown and Oaks Bluff the week before the flotilla. We will meet up with the Flotilla in Block on Wednesday instead of Shelter. Our plan is to spend 7/31 and 8/1 in Cuttyhunk then make our way to Block (Ron we'll keep an eye out for you and the raft).
 
Alex Sag is one of our favorite places. We anchor under the bridge tho to get a more sheltered area. I have anchored outside the breakwater and it's nice but you have to put up with a lot of boat wakes during the day.

I know what you mean, Ric. I've anchored in both places and there are pros & cons in both.

Sag Harbor Cove (Inside after the bridge)
Pros:
- is very peaceful
- excellent weather and wake protection

Cons:
- Bridge boats can only get under the fixed bridge during mid to falling tide
- The water is more stale. Not too bad but it's not as clean as on the outside.
- Longer dinghy ride to town dock.

Sag Outer Harbor
Pros:
- Great scenery
- Clean salt water
- Close to town dinghy dock (via cut through breakwater)
- Area for water activities is right there

Cons:
- Exposed to wakes, but usually it's not too bad
- Exposed to NE wind

Possible solution - if we choose Sag Outer Harbor, in order to minimize the wakes, we better off pointing the bows to NNE with assistance from stern anchors. This way we don't rock and roll side to side. That will work only if the winds are light.

I'll check the tides to see what our options are getting into the cove.
 
Question regarding where to stay in Block. Does anyone have recommendations on reasonable hotel or Bed&Breakfast? Anything we found online is booked for the weekend we'll be there.
 
Ron, We will be on the list for Cuttyhunk a day before heading to Block.

We are going to be heading to block maybe Thursday night if not first thing Friday morning so we will be too late for a rendezvous in Cuttyhunk
 
I have two question for the group:

1. Dinner in Sag Harbor - I'm planning to have a group dinner in Sag on Monday (7/31 st, at least that's the preliminary date). I need to know who would like to join us. Having headcount is important as we'll need advanced reservations.

2. Biking around Block Island - I'm planning to do a group biking tour around the island and stop at few point of interests like the Lighthouse and The Bluffs, possibly the airport. Weather dependant I'm thinking either Fri or Sat. Whoever is interested joining, let me know. We might need to rent scooters for those who might have hard time pedaling for few hours. Even though my mom is willing to ride a bike, I'm thinking that taking a scooter is a safer bet. I'm sure kids will have fun riding it too. For starters, just between Inspiration and Stocks & Blonds we'll have 12 riders. So, with the headcount going up we should plan in advance.
 
Our plans are a bit more solid now, and so we will be staying overnight in Cuttyhunk, Wednesday, August 1st, and then heading to Block Island early Thursday morning, Aug 2nd.
We plan to raft with the group in the great salt pond until Sunday.

As of now, I know of a few folks that might be doing a night in Cuttyhunk before Block, just not sure if we're all on the same day(s).
I think the following CSR members are planning on a Cutty stop:

I see (TLYNCH99) Tom and Pamela are listed on the list as coming from Boston, so maybe they might want to also join us Wednesday night before making the run to Block Island.

We can raft on a town mooring in Cutty or grab slips there, it looks like they have plenty on Dockwa at this point. If I talk to the Harbormaster we can grab a few together if people would like that?

I have a short business trip on Monday, 7/31-Tuesday, 8/1 at lunchtime. Is there a mooring anyone can recommend at West Neck Harbor where we can leave the boat for 2 days while we head back to our home port via car? (If you think this is a bad idea, feel free to share feedback).

We are interested in the bike tour on Block. We will probably need a scooter because our children (6 and 8) won't be able to ride bikes for that long. Maybe there a place to rent a 2 or 3 person kart/ATV type thing.

Which marina on Block Island will those who are not rafting be staying at? Has anyone tried to arrange for everyone at the marina to be in consecutive slips?

In regards to leaving the boat, other than Island Boat Yard marina, I'm not aware of any transient moorings in WNH. Logistically, it might make sense to shoot over to Greenport area. It's much easier getting there by car and you have plenty of choices of marinas and most likely moorings. I've seen plenty of moorings in the harbor (forgot the name) where Townsand Manor and Brewers Marinas are.

In Block - most action, and we usually build a raft, right across from Champlins. But, it's also the busiest and most expensive marina. Panes and Boat Basin could be your alternatives. Due to lack of consistent communication from some of the folks, I gave up on the idea of organizing a group slip rental in Block. So, it's all up to individual crew. My recommendation for those who plan staying a marina is, considering that you might be rafted there (I refer to being rafed while at the dock), it would be a good idea to coordinate with few people from our group, so you would be rafted to someone you know, and not with total strangers.

Scooters are all over the place and easy to rent once you get to town. I don't remember if they have them right in Champlins. They do have bikes right at the marina, though. I also don't recall seeing 3 person karts there, but they might be available, just give a call to couple of places. Aldos is one of the popular places.
