very slow and about 10 ads pop up each time. i cringe every time i have to go to their site. mine is still working and is 3% full

I guess, in the grand scheme of things, how much can we complain? I mean, it has been free for a long time. Can't really complain too much when it's free. But it is certainly a bit of a pain in the butt to have to try and move all those photos somewhere else. And the price they want to charge is just ridiculous. I could understand charging a few bucks a month - maybe $5. But they're absolutely out of their mind with what they're proposing. Maybe they're just testing the waters to see how many people bite.

Well I got my download and when I went back to try it again it said no longer available. So now I`m moving the files to my docs and renaming them. Thats going to be a chore.

be a dying shame to lose these, I was in the rear seat

Well looks like I spoke too soon. Got an email from them last night and today all photos are blocked.
Time to change to a new photo hosting site, anyone know any good ones?
 
I am not sure what happened at Photobucket, but there must have been another leadership or ownership change. I believe its still owned by Private Equity funds. Ontella has had a large stake in them for a while since 2009, but I believe they may be cashing out. If its in a 10yr Fund that timing would make sense.

This is a Harvard Business school case for the future. Like a Smith Corona or Kodak case study (or ironically like MySpace, one of the early owners of Photobucket).

I would like to have been a fly on the wall in the Photobucket board room when this business model change was put forward. Here is my screenplay:

  • Some "past its due date" executive or new PE Board member (that thinks they are in tune with tech disruption because they read an article in the Economist), saying "this is what we are going to do". The idea was floated earlier, but none of the smart minds in the company ever thought it would actually be proposed.
  • A whole bunch of younger brilliant young tech execs in the company sitting in the meeting trying to figure out how to stop the train from going over the edge. Most of them trying to express their concern in that civilized board room way (while thinking in the back of their mind where to send their resume later that day). They give up arguing, and turn the focus in their heads to where the can find a company that has vision that goes forward in time, and not backwards.
  • A couple of them, that have been around longer and are passionate and heavily personally and probably financially invested, and have a vision for how to make it work, probably pound the table for a while, and then walk out in disgust, saying "Fine. You own the place, you call the shots."
  • With all of the dissension now quiet, the execs straighten their suits and, say. "Well, now that we have agreement, how do you think we should roll this out?".
  • The only ones in the board room that are not mentally "checked out" are the "yes men and women" that follow these execs and PE team around and would not disagree with them no matter what. Their careers are based not on the success of the companies, but on following along behind the execs and being loyal. Because they always agree with the executives, they are perceived to be brilliant by those same executives.
  • And that group comes up with this brilliant model and roll out strategy.


Thank the Good Lord that I am not invested in whatever fund is holding Photobucket now. They just took a major hit.

I remember way back when the internet first was rolled out from just being government and universities. I thought, who is going to pay for all of this infrastructure? Companies wont do that, they have no need for the internet.

Then when Google, Altavista, and search engines started out, I thought -- How can they pay for all of this? They don't charge anything for it.

Then in the early years of Amazon, I thought - this is crazy. They don't make any money. They will never survive.

The owners of Photobucket need to be truly smart. There is a disruptive business model out there that could have capitalized on the huge enormous asset that was the formerly loyal non-paying customer base they had. Stay tuned. I think that there is a major shake up at Photobucket that will come out once they convince or get rid of those "past due date" leaders. It may be too late. But maybe not.

And last point in this rant. I have deleted my Photobucket content and account. I do not want to be counted in their "Subscriber count". Those same execs will be trying to defend their actions by saying that defection rates have only been XX% and they were non-paying anyway so no harm done. The more that do that the more their ad revenue will plummet. I am not trying to hurt them any more than they have done to themselves, just making a point early so there is a hope they find a better strategy.

Using shutterfly.com now instead of photobucket. Tried to use "insert image" using "from URL" but after posting the URL from shutterfly.com there is a message "invalid file".

So I decided to add the URL as a link (above) to see what that does...

Oh, by the way, I used the "Insert Image icon using the URL" from shutterfly.com successfully with my signature photo. Why won't the same thing work for posting photos in the post itself?

Any other suggestions for easy posting of photos for Mac users??

click on the 3 dots ... to the right of Download on top of screen
click View Original
right click on pic and copy image

Here is another and quicker way as I found some pix do not open under the View Original.

Ck mark pic in upper right- do not open pic.
click the ( i) circled in upper right
rt click on pic and copy image-paste to sites.

This sucks. It took me 2 months to figure out Photobucket. I just tried Shutterfly for my sig pic and no dice. Hopefully someone smarter than I will post a new thread dedicated to posting pictures on this site. And from the looks of all of the PB warnings on posts, I'm not alone in my ignorance. How 'bout it....any of you tech savvy members want to get something going for us older dudes?
