Hello,

I have a 1997 370AC. The master Stateroom escape hatch/window has 6 handles to secure it in place. Three are broken, due to age. I need to replace these. I have contacted my local dealer, no help. I have contacted Taylor made that said I have to go through the dealer! This has become very frustrating. The replacement handles available do not look correct, although the on-line pictures are terrible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

Rich, I had the same problem with mine and couldn't find replacements. I ended up buying large flat washers that I installed under the handle. They were large enough that they would reach the window frame and lock into it the same way the extended nub on the handle does. You can't unlock them by turning them but in an emergency if you had three original ones on one side of the hatch it will still open if you unlock those three. I hope that makes sense. Mark

Do you have a part number on the good ones? My understanding is Taylor made won't deal with you unless you say it's a "custom" boat. They don't want to mess up their relationships with the major manufacturers. If you know what you want and don't need them to look up by boat manufacturer you can work around?

get a part number and call Taylor, tell them the hatch is in an old Owens or Trojan etc and you will be good.

That's the problem, I can't find a part number. The washer idea might be my temporary fix. I just wished I could find some help. The parts manual just lists the entire window. What I find on-line does not look correct.

The link I posted was the only hatch handle listed in the Taylor Catalog.

The pix in the other links appear to match the Taylor Catalog.

Have you checked Flounder Pounder?

The one in the West Marine link looks closest to my eye. It was the one used on my boat.

UPDATE: I finally found someone from Searay that knew what I was talking about. That part was discontinued 10 years ago! His Taylor Made contact was the same person I spoke with (via email), who said she didn't know and pushed me back to Searay. She could have told me flat our it's not made anymore!

I ordered a handle and it's not even close.

I resigned to the fact that I have to somehow make my own. There's 3 out of 6 that are still holding, but one of them is cracked! No one has a solution or a suggestion on what to do.

Is this something that might be able to scanned and then be 3D printed?
I don't know enough about the loads the part is under or what suitable materials might be available.

If that's not possible, maybe machine something? ($)

Is it just the 'ear' that broke off or something more?

The ear, the handle, it's a center section of three pieces. I have some machinable nylon and think I can do it in a few steps. I need to machine the block with 3 different dia, then cut. Now to find a lathe to use. Really bad customer service from Taylor Made! I'll update when I come up with something.

I would call Taylor Made directly.

Yep, I did. They kept sending me back to Searay and they never told me that the handles I've been looking for are discontinued. Here's the last correspondence with the Searay dealer:

--------------------------------------------

Yup. You’ve got the discontinued ones.

They look a little different and only latch one way, but I do believe the #1720’s are the closest replacement.

And yeah, I’ve had PLENTY of correspondence with Terra (she’s my TM rep) about these handles.

The #1720's don't work. Crazy to replace a good hatch because of the handles. Thanks for all the replies, I'll post something when I get this figured out.

That sucks, ours are actually the previous style, and they are still available. Nuts
