Hi everyone...Hopefully this season turns around soon... Well me and the wife have a trip planned to green port on July 7th leaving from sandy hook... Hopefully the weather is good. Just debating on wheres the first stop for fuel and does the current matter on the long island sound. I know high tide is at 8:25 at bklyn bridge. Im hoping i only have to stop once but not sure. This is my first long trip so any info would be great.. Thanks guys Frank

Hi Siboatguy,

I have done that same trip a few years ago from haverstraw NY. I stopped for fuel at mount sinai Harbor. its the inlet right after Port Jefferson. I had plenty gas left once i arrived in Greenport.
It's a great trip, you will really enjoy it. I have the 320 with v-drives which has less power than the sterndrive version and current or ties didn't matter at all.
if you go all the way up there you should really consider adding a couple more nights to your intinary.
after Greenport, we went to sag harbor for the night and spend the day at Shelter island then we spent another day at star island yacht club in Montauk.
Best trip ever!!!!!
Please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any other questions.

Ty so much i have the same boat as you.. 05 sea ray 320 350mags v-drives... If you don't mind me asking do you remb how long the ride took? I might look into stopping at Shelter Island one of the days while im up there. Just not sure where yet. We are gonna stay over by claudio's while we are in green port.

I would guess this would be a six plus hour trip if you tried to do it non-stop. So you may want to stop at one of the many harbors along the LI North Shore, anchor and stay over, or just to fuel up and take a break. I would choose a harbor that suits your preferences. Anchor, mooring or slip, restaurants and bars, etc.. I would not be that concerned with tides except at Hell's Gate. Greenport may end up being a good halfway point.

Thinking of stopping in Port Jefferson for fuel at the half way point.. Maybe grab a bite..

I would say about 5 hours from hells gate without stopping.
I don't remember any marina in shelter island but i used to anchor at sunset beach. It's a really nice anchoring area in front of the hotel. You can call the hotel for food or drinks and they send people on jet skis to deliver to you, they will also pick up or drop of people to the beach or hotel on those jet skis.
the only thing is you are not alllowed to anchor overnight.

We're located directly across from Port Jeff on the CT shore and when we come down through the city we're at about 1/4 tank when we refuel at Liberty Landing. So you maybe right about 1/4 tank when you reach Port Jeff. It would be a great spot for a break but you may end up spending the night since there is much to do as far as restaurants/bars. You can either grab a mooring from the public port jeff marina or from the port jeff yacht club. Either one is abuot $50 for the night and Is close to town. If you choose to anchor you will be a ways out near the entrance of the harbor so it would be a long dinghy ride to the town of port jeff. The water taxi does a pickup from there but you may have a bit of a wait as they don't seem to do it too often. You can fuel up at Danfords Marina as well as pick up a slip from them but it is at a premium.

Hi Siboatguy, Greenport is a great destination. My Wife is originally from there and all her family is still there. I usually take my boat up there every summer. Recommend getting a slip right downtown at Mitchell Park & Marina . Its right next to Claudio's and you can walk to everything downtown .Its owned by the Village , so call ahead , gets busy that time. (631)477-2200. As far as going to Sag Harbor, that's great too. If just going for the day, you can dock at the town dock ($2.00 /ft) for 4 hours if I remember correctly. Or, if you want to overnight, call Sag Harbor Yacht Club (631) 725-0567, I'm sure they can accommodate you. Its about a 45 minute cruise from Greenport to Sag either way around Shelter Is. , north or south. Have a safe journey ! BTW, wait ill you see some of the mega yachts (100-150 ft) in Sag Harbor, quite a sight,,,,

Didn't think I would burn that much fuel. If its that much Fuel I have to stop closer because I'm about 30 mins from Liberty landing

Thanks everyone this site is great.. I just called that marina and booked they only had 10 slips left and said filling up quick so i booked my spot.. Hopefully no rain. And that spot on sunset beach sounds great def gonna try to head over there. Im just worried about where my first stop for fuel is gonna be and how much fuel gonna burn.. Im hoping just to have to stop once. Just hope i can make it to port jeff. I have the Garmin gps so if anything ill find a closer spot but I'm just trying to plan the trip..

I burn 30 gallons an hour. My boat holds 220 gallons I've made it from New Rochelle to Shelter Island with 1/4 tank to spare. There are plenty of stops along the way if you become concerned.

You're probably better off waiting to get fuel somewhere on the Long Island Sound.
I brought my boat around from Westbrook Ct. through the sound, city, and ocean to Lindenhurst on the south shore of Long Island last Sunday. The ocean leg between the lower harbor to the Jones Inlet was sloppy, and it took me 5:45 to get to the Jones Inlet from Westbrook, then another 45 minutes to get to my dock. If the ocean were calmer I probably could have shaved a little time off the trip.
Plum Gut is a little southeast of Westbrook, and your boat is probably faster than mine, so I'm thinking your whole trip should take maybe 6 hours.
I chose that route for several reasons, but the biggest was because the boat is new to me and there would be plenty of places to duck in to along the Long Island side if I had a problem with a boat I'm still unfamiliar with.
The Maptech Chart book for the Long Island Sound has great info on marinas with fuel along the way. If you need, I could look for fuel contact number info in any bays along the way you think you may pull in to and send it to you in a PM.

Mitchells in Greenport is in the center of town and has floating docks. You can walk to Claudios. Not a fan of the docking situation at Claudios

I agree with Garry on Mitchell Park & Marina. Staying at Claudio's for a weekend or an overnight is not the best choice. Besides not getting the "marina experience" you'll get rocked from boating traffic. Another nice marina is Townsend Manor. It's a little further from the town, but quite and cozy marina. We've stayed there couple of times. It's just 15-20min walk to town. Regarding the fuel. PJ is pricey. So, get just enough to get you comfortably to Greenport and then get fuel there at Brewer's marina, which right across from Townsend.

Ok thanks guys should be a nice weekend.. Going up on a Friday, then maybe a trip over to sunset beach on sat. And supposed to be fireworks sat night up there. Hoping i can see them from the marina. Then back home Monday as long as the weather holds out we are good...

Has anyone came home through Shinnecock bay, Though the lock? Back to sandy hook. Curious if it saves a little time? Was thinking of coming home that way in the ocean..

It's definitely a bit shorted, but whether it's the better route all depends on the weather. Manasquan inlet to Shinnecock inlet you're looking at about 85nm. One year we were coming back to NJ using that route and the wind picked up much more than was forecasted. A 4hr ride was more like 6hr not very enjoyable ride.

It will save time if you go out Shinnecock Inlet and run the ocean home, but running the inside through the bays is not a good idea without local knowledge.
The ocean forecast would have to be really good.
I was faced with the same choice last weekend and chose to go the longer way through the sound. The ocean forecast was less than ideal.
