Hard to Believe!

We have a condo in Sun City West, AZ, a Del Webb community for people over 50. We go down there a few times a year in the winter months and have a small (13') Boston Whaler to tow to the nearby lakes when we want. It's nice to have a place to get away to when the weather turns nasty up here.

Mama wants to sell the condo and buy a "nicer" condo. That equates to putting another $150K with the proceeds we'd get from the sale of our condo, and I'm just not willing to take that out of my investments.

Last year we remodeled the kitchen, this year we're putting in a new bathroom with a walk-in shower. That's the last of the remodeling we're going to do except for painting and small stuff. I think that will bring the condo up to her "standards" and she'll stop pushing to get a different one.

The problem is she watches HGTV with all those shows about flipping homes and remodeling them. I know that's her driving force behind wanting "bigger and better".

Okay... I'll be the odd man out. Wifey said sell the boat. She got served with the divorce papers this morning.

It certainly wasn't the only factor but it was a significant one. When we were dating she loved the boat. After the wedding, not so much. She invited people to go out on it with us all the time and seemed to enjoy that aspect of it very much.

There's a silver lining. Three of the girls I used to date before I got married can't wait to go boating again as well as the barmaid who's half my age at one of the places I stop for dinner after work. I guess I'll get over it. ;)

We have thrown around a few plans on moving to FLA in 2 years we thought we had it worked out for the most part of selling on LI and buying in FLA move the boat and snowbird. Well now after 2 years of looking in FLA we may just rent for 6 months at a time and move around the state to find a home base. Maybe live aboard for a few months , get a storage facility,,, who knows
Point is,, don't throw money down in 1 place all of a sudden what if after 1 year you want a change? We don't want to be tied down to another "neighborhood" again
Don't rush into this take your time and move around.

Wow, I can empathize on what it's like to marry a pretend boater. I hope everything is amicable.

On the topic of buying property in Cabo, I'd say that's a no go. Remember what happened after the earthquake? For what you would spend you could take a lot of vacations. Plenty of investment opportunities In the States, or other countries for that matter where you don't have the corruption and potential lawlessness.

Well, when it comes to vacation property ... had a great vacation home in Gatlinburg which went up in flames after Thanksgiving. Got nice insurance settlement and given our age and station, we chose to pay down home mortgage and rent in the future. If I would rebuild it would cost me so much time away from my business in going up there all the time. Add 50k to the cost ... I am a detailed oriented guy ... Anyway, glad I got my lil sea ray on the lift out back!

This sounds like the exact conversation my wife and I have been having for last couple years. Our kids will be out the door in 4 years and we had always planned to buy a home in FL after they were gone (I can work from anywhere as long as there is an airport nearby). After a ton of consideration we decided to keep our home here in MN so the boys have a home base to return to during college and our new plan is to rent in FL during the coldest months and try out different parts of the state. Summertime in MN is unbeatable but the winters are as bad as you can image.

I agree, why commit to one place in case you decide another place fits your needs better a year or two later?

In Mexico you do not hold the title to property within 100KM of the ocean. The tile is held by a bank and you pay a fee to the bank to hold the title. There are rules for selling and there are rules for leaving the place to a child. Based on the people we know that own the closing costs on your property will be 10,000 US. Capital gains for non residences can be high. Long term owners are a great way to find out all the rules before you commit.

It's all good. We don't hate each other. We just weren't right for each other. We decided to get divorced last April, and we signed the separation agreement lasy July. She still lives in my house, but in the spare bedroom. She's almost all packed up. We'll be divorced withing the next 2 months and she'll be gone. I'm a good guy, and I never make enemies unless someone forces me to do it. I'm sure we'll be friends in the end.

Meanwhile... The women that actually like boating are lining up... LOL.

When our only child goes away to college, in about 10 years, THE WIFE said it will be time to sell the house and buy a live aboard boat! Did I say how much I love her!!!! (The wife that is:smt043 ) We told our son that when he wants to come home during college we will tell him which airport to fly to so he can meet us.

Similar situation here. About 10 years ago, my wife basically demanded that I buy a large (40'+) boat. At the time my business was fairly new and any extra money was going there. A year later I sold the business and divorced the wife. I don't do so well when someone DEMANDS that I do something.

Now I have a great boat and a great lady! It all works out!

You would be wise to check different areas in FL before you buy.

My oldest is finishing up her sophmore year in college and my other one is a HS Junior. One of the big reasons we just got the bigger boat is so once the younger one goes away we can take more boat trips. Although my wife is not by any means an avid boater, she likes the idea of having the creature comforts on the bigger boat and is looking forward to the trips.

We will be checking more areas in Florida for sure. We are, so far at least, set on living internationally in retirement. We are doing a lot of research and even joined an expatriate forum that has good information. We think about Cabo due to how short a flight it is back to California where we have family and friends. I have friends already in Cabo and one has been there about 6 years so he is a great resource. We may buy land and build later which eliminates the need to sell the boat. The Admiral is "kind of done" with the whole boating thing partially due to an incident involving a dinghy insurance claim/suit, but knows I am not.

What happened...if you can?

A vacation home doesn't work for us because we don't want to spend all our travel time going to the same place.
We went for a bigger boat instead so we can take longer boat trips in the season, and then plan to take several vacations a year to lots of different places in the off season.

In a few years when we retire this will be our plan as well.
