CSR Northeast Flotilla 2017

So guys, any ideas on destinations? This thread is really slow to gain momentum this year. If I may make one suggestion it would be that if Block Island is a destination this year, it be the last one as the flotilla never seems to be able to leave there! LOL!!
I was also wondering if there was any interest in Newport again? Last time it was on the itinerary (after BI) only Russ, Neil, the Hudson valley contingent & I made it! I would consider going back.

I believe Alex suggested the backside of Shelter Island (in West Neck harbor - by Island Boatyard) for the first weekend and the location of the feast. I absolutely love this location. I've only boated there once about 6 years ago and have been meaning to get back there, so this would be perfect. So count my vote for that. Unfortunately, we already have my kids signed up for basketball camp that week, so we'll only be around for that first weekend, and possibly the next weekend depending on where you end up (you usually don't have to twist my arm to go to Block).

Hello All,

I've been following these flotillas for a couple of years, unfortunately the dates have never worked for us. Looks like this year we can make it. We boat out of Boston and the proposed ports would be the furthest we have ever ventured... For the folks that are coming from North of the Cape Cod Canal, do you guys head down to long island together?

Tom

We are in for the Block island portion of the trip for sure. i like the idea of newport. We love the town. No shortage of good food and bars. Maybe a leg to Cuttyhunk after?

Sounds good. We like Newport as well. We can see how the port selection plays out.

We we are excited about joining this trip.

Alex can you please add us.

Got you on the list, Tom. Welcome aboard!

Todd - It would be great to drive down to see you guys in Newport, hope the flotilla makes it there... Newer members can look at the past threads linked in the first post for port ideas...a lot of good suggestions wound up "on the cutting room floor" in years past.

Our crazy summer schedule and budget or lack thereof keeps us close to LI.
We are looking at the week before the flotilla doing a LI sound / Ct Coast trip.
Would like to connect at Shelter as well...
Will keep an eye on the flotilla plans as well

John, any suggestions on any ports in your neck of the woods. We haven't ventured north much. How is Hamberg Cove?

Hamburg Cove is always a popular place to spend the weekend. Lots of boats in there on weekends. Fairly open during the week. I've only gone there for day trips as the kids get bored fairly quickly. THere's not really anywhere to go once you're there. But the mostly fresh water is nice. No one anchors in there. You need to grab a mooring and most moorings are private, but there are some for rent also. I'm not sure how much, or if they check on weekdays, or how many boats can tie up to a single mooring.

Just south of Hamburg Cove is Nott Island (directly across from Essex, CT). We prefer this spot. Nice beach and huge sand bars from low to mid-tide. The kids love it there. Plus it's a short dinghy ride across the river to Essex where there's a town dock for the dinghy, a few good restaurants and bars, ice cream, just a very cute/quaint town. The downside of this spot is that the current can rip through there pretty quickly when the tide is going out. Most of the time it's perfectly fine, but it can get a little "exciting" at times.

In Westbrook, CT, right outside of my marina (Brewers Pilots Point) is Duck Island. There are 2 large breakwaters protecting this anchorage. It's a nice spot. We often anchor out there for the day. On weekends it can get a little choppy in there from boats ripping through to the north. The harbor is a short dinghy ride in and you can go to Bill's Seafood by dingy (extremely popular place). THere's also miles of beautiful creeks that you can explore by dinghy.

Not sure about other years but we were the only ones from MA to make the trip down to Shelter Island for the start of the week. We couldn't spend the whole week last year but it was a fun weekend despite the weather!

We will join for at least part of this years trip as well, we have friends visiting either at the start or end of the trip so until that is settled not sure when we will go.

If you go I would suggest you time your exit from the canal to be well before noon unless you hit the 3-4 days in the summer that the wind inst blowing 10-15 out of the Southwest, it makes it very uncomfortable segment of the trip especially in adverse current.

I am a little south of the canal (in New Bedford) but would be happy to meet up and run down (or back) together if we can make things work out.

I would prefer to travel with other boats from the Cape Cod canal to our destinations.

We're starting from Mattapoisett, a short run from the canal. We probably wouldn't make the trip to Long Island, but would try to make Newport or Block if those are on the itinerary this year. Last year we planned to connect for the MV and Hyannis stops, but weather stopped the flotilla at the Block.

Maybe for the Massachusetts contingent, we could meet up for an overnight stay somewhere between the canal and Cuttyhunk, and then travel together to Block Island? Actually, if it's mid-week, it would be easy to get moorings inside the sheltered Cuttyhunk basin. The Cuttyhunk raw bar boat would come visit our little Massachusetts pre-game flotilla and bring us fresh oysters and lobstaaaah. The next morning, we could head over to Block Island early to have the best chance for a somewhat smooth ride with the group.

Thoughts?

Be_Prepared,

Something like that sounds like a great plan! We are planning on taking the whole week off, so we meeting up mid week somewhere would be great. Glad to see there are some folks from Mass going... We've never gone through the canal before... so that would be a first.

Swaterhouse, thanks for the details on getting to buzzards bay early in the AM... We've heard horror stories...

Tom,

I've been through the canal few time and have experience with Bazzards bay as well. As Swaterhouse mentioned earlier, the key in that area is the wind direction. SW wind is your biggest concern there. My advice, anything above 15MPH out of SW, don't even try on 330DA. Watch the weather closely and make the best call. One of the options is to go through the Canal and stay overnight in Onset. There's a nice anchorage there. Then, take off bright and early while the wind is light. BTW, the canal is nothing to worry about. You're in protected water. I've been through it during a t-storms and it was a piece of cake.

Of course, keeping an eye on the thread and coordinating with folks from the area, so you can travel together, will make the experience so much better.

Alex,

Thanks for the Info. That seems to make a lot of sense, and Onset seems like a good stop over point.

We look forward to meeting everyone....

We have met up with the flotilla a few times in the past. It is a really great time with really great people. In the past we have not made it to the feast on LI but have waited till the flotilla made it more north, once at Newport and once at Block. Traveling with a group from north would make the trip to the feast a much more enjoyable trip.

We are on vacation the week before the flotilla so unfortunately I am not sure if we will be able to get down to meet up with them this year, it all depends on the itinerary.
I will be following the thread and can make something work to meet up with everyone.

Another place to stop is Sandwich Marina. It is mainly a fishing port but they always have transient slips and have nice facilities. There are a few restaraunts right in the area of the marina. This would be a good stop if you hit the canal coming from the north and the current the is running against you at that time. It can run up to 5 knots so going through against the current takes 2 times as long and you burn a lot of fuel doing it. It is not a bad ride, just long, it has taken me 2hrs to get through the canal against a full tide. The canal is a no wake zone so if the current is going 5 knots towards you then you are plowing a large wake just to make headway against the current.

Exactly what we were thinking.
