JVM225, my fault I didn't read your entire post. I agree with you on the route plum gut is good just check the weather and tides before hand it may kick up but very doable for your boat. Fuel up in Ct much cheaper than NY.. Looks to be roughly 100nm from Westbrook to FI inlet. Enjoy the ride.take pics for us. And congrats

That would be my recommended route! Canal; out Shinnecock and in FI Inlet

If I take the north route through the sound I'd want to make a trip of it and spend the night in the City somewhere. We've stayed at Liberty Landing before and really like it. We may even want to try the new place in Brooklyn. The problem is that I don't know if we'd have that kind of time.
Going the south route I could have my wife drop us off early in the morning and she could take the ferry back with her car from New London to Orient Point. The boat is in fantastic shape and went through survey and sea trial with flying colors but it's still new to me. I really doubt that there would be any problems, but if something should happen and I had to pull in to a marina somewhere along the way it will be nice to have my wife close by with the car.
I do think I'm going to wait for a day with a decent ocean forecast so I can avoid Moriches Bay though. I really don't want to take a chance with a boat that is new to me.
Sounds like Peconic Bay, Shinnecock Canal, Bay, and Inlet are all pretty straightforward. Once I'm in the ocean I've got a clear shot back to the Fire Island Inlet.

Take the North shore route it's super deep with many places to stop.and if you deviate more than 3' off your route you'll still be in 60' of water. I'll never transit moriches again. Just check out activecaptain for the best route.and have fun.

Get it right theyre called Multi function displays unless your still using a 1998 model it may only be a GPS? And, you don't need electronics to travel across the bay 100 times a season. Can't you see both slips from each other?

3 feet, 3 football fields, whatever............ same difference to Joe. He's more concerned with what it's called than how it functions. He must've been monitoring his fuel burn instead of GPS when he started clam digging.

I'm buying a house around New Brunswick (Move in June) but for now, my Luna Sea will stay in Baltimore :D

Just brought a 320, Now looking forward to that trip to Green port claudio's after i get to know the boat a little.. I just want to make sure i know the inlets really good.. The boat has GPS just hoping I'm in deep enough water because never was on the long island sound and don't know what inlet to go in..

Thanks! Can't wait for April so I can get her home. MarineMax includes full fuel tanks with their delivery so at least I'll be able to get a nice long ride on the boat before I have to fill her up. I'll probably bring at least two other people with me for the trip back and one of them will be the designated photographer.

If I were coming from the Staten Island area I'd probably head up the East River and then head east in the LI Sound to Plum Gut. I've never been through the LI Sound by boat, but I know its deep and there are nice places to stop along the way if you want to pull in. Going through the East River and Hell Gate at slack tide is very easy and there is some nice sightseeing to do so have a camera ready.
I'm very familiar with the trip on the Ocean between NY Harbor and as far east as the Fire Island Inlet. If the Ocean is flat you can make some good time, but there is no place to pull in on the Ocean and not many sights to see.
The bays along the south shore of Long Island are not for the faint of heart. Channels are narrow and there is no room for error. I've been boating on the south shore for over 35 years and I am very careful because I know if I get distracted for a few seconds I will be in trouble. I've seen some really experienced boaters run aground around here because they got a little distracted.
East Rockaway and Jones Inlets are very easy to go in and out of and the NY State boat Channel is well marked. If you don't stay directly in that narrow channel though you will run aground quickly.
I you are heading for the Jones Inlet for a trip to the restaurants on the Nautical Mile in Freeport, or some time on the hook in Zacks Bay for an event at Jones Beach and the Ocean gets a little sloppy you can tuck in the East Rockaway Inlet and cut 12 miles off of the Ocean portion of the trip. Reynolds Channel that runs behind Long Beach is well marked.
The Fire Island Inlet is a little trickier because it isn't a straight line of buoys all the way in, and the Great South Bay can be tricky on the south end along Fire Island.
There are a couple of nice marinas you can go to on Fire Island to spend a night or two and enjoy the beaches.
I've never been through Moriches Bay but have heard plenty of horror stories about it.

There are a bunch of boaters here from the south shore of LI. If you need any intel, PM or ask. Were just east of Freeport .
there is always a large contingent of folks that raft up Memorial day for the annual air show to see the Blue angels or Thunderbirds fly over.

That I would def like to do this year is the Memorial day party.. Do you know what day it falls on? Only reason I'm saying is i got married last year memorial day May 28th. Thats not far from me right across the ocean. Where do you guys tie up ocean side or inside i hear theres something? And don't know how to get into jones beach inlet.

Memorial day weekend is May 27-29. I've never been through the inlet as well. I'm sure a dedicated thread will pop up here shortly with details

Jones Inlet is well marked and relatively easy. The State boat channel is also well marked between Jones Inlet and Zacks Bay.
The Jones Inlet is only about 20 miles east of Breezy Point if that helps.
Zacks Bay is just east of the Wantagh Parkway Bridges and behind the theater. It's probably a 15 minute ride from the Inlet. Getting in and out of Zacks Bay can be tricky because the entrance is narrow, but it's well marked and there is always boat traffic in and out of there on weekends so you'll have plenty of people to follow.
The air show is awesome. Make sure you get there as early as possible. By 10:00 am it's already getting crowded and not too long after that you can practically walk across the water on boats anchored in there.
Most people leave within an hour of the show being over. If you stay a little longer than that the traffic will die down considerably.

Our raft up gets there on Friday and sat and stays till Monday look for a thread to start in march. It's a great weekend.

Have any of you guys ever heard of a place called pops over by there... Supposed to be a dock and dine near Jones beach? Is it any good?
