I'm looking at this boat, and when I turn on the ignition, it starts beeping. Should it stop after a few seconds? The dealer was not sure, and I have sent an IM to the owner, but nothing back yet. I'm going to get a surveyor to do the inspection, but when I was looking over the boat, I noticed this.

It beeps because there is no oil pressure. Nothing new there, though - it's been a standard thing with Mercruiser (and others) for quite some time. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the info Dennis. If the surveyor gives it a passing grade, it will be my first boat. I read in the Forum that you should always buy your 2nd boat first. That is what I'm doing. I started off just wanting a nice 20-21' boat, but I had help from the Wife Unit to look at this one.

Sounds like she's a "keepah"! Good luck with the survey!

So just check and keep the oil full, and no worries? Sea test on Mon or Tue so we will see if it all checks out. Since I'm new at this, I worry about the little bit of rust and paint flaking on top of the risers. It says it has 117 hours, but checking to see if that is really true for a 2003 boat. Have learned a lot from this forum so far, more knowledge means better questions to ask. One of the staff at the Marina did drive the boat from the owners dock/lift to the Marina and said it worked well.

A lot like a car, yes. Once the engine starts the beeping should go away as you'll now have oil pressure. The flaking may or may not be an issue. You're in a humid, salt environment so that generally means more maintenance/upkeep... with preventive maintenance being a key point. Your surveyor will (should) pull the elbow and/or risers to take look on the inside at the exhaust and water passages. If someone (marina or surveyor?) has a scanner they can read the onboard ECM to verify hours, also check fault codes and history. But I wouldn't be surprised if the 117 is correct. It's certainly on the low side (which can be good and bad), but it's not unheard of.
