Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

Is there water under the cabin step? How about in the small area in front of the batteries near the cabin door? Or is it only in the rear by the transom?

is in the small bilge in front of the batteries. And a little under the engines. It's not under the steps in the cabin or in the back of the bilge at the transom. But I think this might be because all of those bilges are connected and I might have the nose of the boat slightly lower than the transom.

I would guess your getting water from the anchor locker. Lift up the front v berth cushion and put a dry towel in there before it rains. If it gets wet after rain then there is the problem. I would also check the sliding windows on either side of the boat, I had a leak from the slider in the head.

It's not the anchor locker. I resealed the anchor locker last year and regardless I have the cork in the drain on the bilge side so water couldn't get to the bilge anyway. I did check the front compartment under the v-berth and it's dry.

However, I haven't considered that the leaking windows could be contributing to the water in the bilge. I replaced the port side window last year and I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. But the starboard window has not seen any attention and I know it gets water in the track that doesn't drain out. I could easily see it also leaking behind the frame and into the bilge area.

We're supposed to get some rain tomorrow and I might be able to be in the boat while it's raining to see if I can figure it out. We'll see.

Ok, curious to see if you get it figured out. Water leaks are a PITA to find.

It doesn't sound like much--if any--water is getting into the cockpit, but are the drain hoses from the deck secure and draining overboard as designed? I remember mention in a different thread that loose joints/cracks allowed the cockpit to drain into the bilge.

Also, could any of these be contributing?

Windshield
Rail stanchions
Cleats
Nav lights

Thanks for all of those ideas. I did have a drain hose that wasn't working properly a few weeks ago, but I've got it fixed and the rest are doing fine as well. The windshield could be a culprit, but I'm not sure how that gets into the bilge. It looks like it would leak into the cockpit first. The rain stanchions and nav lights have all been rebed over the last year. I haven't done the cleats but they're very solid. Something I still need to do are the water fill neck and the holding tank pump out neck. They both could be letting some water in.

I've got some many little projects going on that I'm somewhere between overloaded and exhausted. Just tackling different ones at different times. Here's what I've been doing over the holidays:

- replaced spark plugs and v-belts
- finished fuel flow meters and digital readout
- new bilge pump
- water intake hoses for both engines and A/C
- ran lines and power for new macerator with a Y valve for selecting pump out or macerator out
- rewired helm; installed new ground and positive buses; recrimped or soldered wires
- refurbished head (toilet); new water lines, etc
- dingy quick connects on swim platform
- working on taking apart the interior pieces for reupholstery
- and oh yeah, where's that water coming from?

I might have a sh*#%%~ job ahead of me. Has anyone replaced the massarator pump? If so any words of advise?

Wear gloves? Sorry - couldn't help myself. I just installed a macerator pump, Y-valve and associated lines. Someone previously had removed everything from my boat so I don't know what the original setup was like. The only advice that comes to mind is to have a heat gun available. Makes removing lines or installing lines SO much easier.

+1 on the heat gun and gloves. Also, a through flushing with water prior to beginnging the job makes for a much more pleasant experience. I replaced the waste hoses when I bought my boat and that is how I did it. That big hose is like trying to wrestle an Anaconda through a keyhole. Enjoy.

Vicks on your upper lip below your nose, you'll thank me for that trick!!

Will the waste tank drain out into the bilge once the lines are off?

Also, is this the time to replace some of those lines?

I changed the macerated pump on my 87 300 Sundancer two years ago. It was mounted higher than the tank so no problem with hoses draining. Not sure where it is located on the Weekender but it was a real pain to get to on the Sundancer. The heat gun is a good idea though as are gloves and Vicks in the nostrils. Even better is a cigarette filter with outer paper removed stuffed in to each nostril. That will prevent the stink from attaching to nose hairs and lingering after the job is done.

mine is at the tanks base, lower than the Y valve and vacuum tank. Slip neighbor said to try to free the old pum up using the screw on the back of the old pump first, maybe I will get lucky

Another reason to flush well with water and pump out before starting the job.
If your lines are moldy, it's time to replace them, or if you feel they are due for replacement, now would be a good time. Otherwise, just replace the pump.

restoring my 390 is making me miss my 300.

hope everyone is well.

here are a few pics from the day I sold her. I put a ton of work and money in to her. lots of upgrades and mechanical fixes.

You SHOULD feel a little bad! She was a beautiful boat.

Now... where can we watch the 390 restoration project?
