I am looking to replace my dead norcold in immediate future. I am a liveaboard on my 400DB, how is the sound level and overall performance of the new fridge? How about direct fit? Any special needs in getting it in/out of the boat?

This Vitrifrigo is an exact fit(DP2600IBD4-F-2). It gives 1cu more, which is huge. A little more expensive than the Norcold. The only beef I have is the handles.
 
Had my bottom blasted last week. It's back to gel coat:

So I have an issue I need to address over the off season. My port tank when it gets between 1/4 & 1/2 seems to be sucking air. The engine will run ****ty & stall. If I switch the tank to the starboard it starts up and runs smooth.

Has as anyone experienced the issue? Someone suggested they may have switched the gen & engine pickup from the factory. Thoughts?

Generator pickup is on the starboard tank. So that eliminates that theory.

The first thought would be check the fuel filters. Dirt is not a friend when it comes to diesels. Also check the vent on the outside of the boat. Spiders and bugs like clogging the vent hole which will cause a fuel pick up problem. Good luck. Contrary to what you read, the 3116's are great motors. Mine have 1600 hours and not one problem.
 
I agree. Have you swapped out the racor? I run on one racor per engine, but have the duel set up. My stbd started running crappy and I switched the valve to the other racor and all was good again.
 
I changed the fuel filter attached to the Westerbreke diesel generator and now it won't start. Plunger is moving but not seeing any fuel come out of the fuel line to the filter. Any idea why? It was running before I changed the filter.
 
Did you fill the filter with fuel before installing it. You most likely have air in the system. Take the filter back off and make sure it is completely filled before putting it back on.
 
I did put it on without adding fuel, and cranked it. Then I remembered to add fuel. Is there a way to prime the engine? When I take the line off that goes to the filter, I'm not seeing any fuel flow. Is that line the supply or return?
 
Just so we are sure what you are referencing, Which fuel filter did you change? Did you change the Racor filter? Or did you change the small paper filter in the little canister on the engine block?

The one on the engine block. Racor was changed this summer with no issues.

It's the supply to the generator. Did you by chance shut the supply or return valve off at the top of the tank and forgot to open it back up?

I have been following threads about the boat shaped systems monitor at the helm. Mine worked when I bought the boat three years ago. Last year it stopped working. The threads have said there is no repair. I figured it wasn't that important so I left it alone. Yesterday we took our canvas down to frame for shrink wrap. As my luck goes, it poured. Now the monitor works again! I guess it just needed water!

I test mine all the time. I feel it's very important. Without it, how would you know if any bildge pumps were going on while you were underway? The emergency pump has an audible alarm on that systems monitor too.

Glad it's working again, though.

Short lived joy. Once it dried out, it stopped working again. I may try to replace the switch.
 
Concealed cabinet hinge. (Where to get then)

Have a 1999 400DB. The hinges for the little mirrored bathroom cabinets keep breaking. Any idea where to get replacements? Per the owners parts manual it looks like P/N 798033 and 798041. I think they are Euro and any that i have found at hardware stores don`t match up correctely.

Lurker alert!!!

I'm only up to page 88 but I had some questions. We just "sold" our 370DA and we want a 400DB. So, here we go...

1. I think I want diesel. We're currently on a small inland lake (Monroe Lake in Indiana) but may move later. If I go for diesel is there any major difference between the models of Cat and Cummins?

2. I'm more familiar with gassers so is there any "real" advantage to a diesel on a small lake? Conversely, any disadvantage to a diesel?

3. I think I've discerned that post 1999 has a 40 gal holding tank. Correct?

4. With regards to diesel, are they that much more work to maintain than a big block gasser?

5. Anyone want out of their 400?
 
I will chime in a bit Arickosmo.

We have owned our diesel 400 DB since new in 2003. We have been as far South as Mexico and as far North as Campbell River, BC all on her own bottom. Our boat is Cummins powered. There are many, many threads on the Cat vs. Cummins trends. I am happy with my Cummins. On a lake, the diesels would probably be a huge overkill (never ran this boat on a lake). The one advantage you would learn to love in a hurry is the torque the diesels provide for docking in any kind of wind (or current). If there is a chance you will transition to a larger body of water the diesels would be my recommendation.

Yes we have a 40 gallon holding tank. 125 gallons of water and 350 gallons of fuel. I have not worked on gasser's since 2003, but my diesels take a long day in the spring and a long day in the fall for routine maintenance. More for things like aftercoolers, hoses, etc. I think the engines are pretty easy to maintain. Maybe someone else can comment on the big block gasser vs. diesel maintenance.
 
I would be looking for a diesel. Gassers work fine, but that is a lot of boat. Diesels perform better when it comes to fuel performance on big boats. I have Cats and they have been flawless even though there is a lot of negative talk about them. Caterpillar rectified their problem motors years ago by replacing them for free.

It will still come down to personal preference, which will be debated by everyone. Also, I'm not sure about the holding tank. I think they did go bigger, but not sure what year

I'm in southern Indiana and boat at Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. There are a lot of 400's on the lake. Check out kentuckiana boat sales, boattrader.com and Nashville yacht sales and see what is out there. Good luck and may I be the first to say....you will love the 400.
