Question, we are considering a move to the Charleston area specifically Mt. Pleasant. We are currently in the Annapolis area and am trying to figure out what would be a good marina for my 280DA. Here, I am in a wet slip and then pull out in the winter until spring. What are the "procedures" in that area? I spoke to Isle of Palms Marina and they mentioned people pull out having a trailer. I don't have a trailer.

Any help would be appreciated and things to think about being this would be a longer boating season then we are used to.:smt100

Thanks,

Jason

Boating in Charleston is year round so there is no need to haul out except for repairs and maintenance. We have stayed at Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant many times. Great facility. Marina tenants can use the resort facilities, ie pool, etc.

Can't help with Charleston, but have you considered Little River, SC?

We have a slip at Lightkeepers Marina that we rent(plan on living there full time when we finally retire) and Mrs. Strypes' aunt & uncle have a slip that they live at year round. Great place and well protected from hurricanes! There are a few large slips/docks for sale currently, but you can usually find a slip/dock to rent for long term use, especially smaller ones.

Good luck in your search and congratulations on the move!

Jim, out of curiosity do many folks have cruisers if you even know? I see a lot of deckboats and center consoles. Do folks anchor or just mainly do day trips? I see that most marinas dry stack. Just different experiences then the Chesapeake. Thanks!

Charleston Harbor Marina is mostly cruisers and sailboats in the 30-50' range. There some center consoles but no deck boats in that marina. Smaller boats are typically dry stacked, trailered or stored on lifts behind waterfront properties. There are a few areas to anchor for the day off Morris Island at the entrance to the harbor. It can be a real party with boats beaching and rafting up. Keep in mind that the Charleston area consists of the ocean, a busy harbor, the ICW and a series rivers and estuaries. It not a large protected body of water like the Chesapeake. The tidal range can be significant along the SC coast.

Ours was located at Toler's Cover in Mt. Pleasant for couple months "break" on the way from Georgian Bay to Ft. Myers. We were down there a few times. Nice, quiet place. No real amenities (it's a condo complex) - but safe, clean & friendly. And yes, quite the tidal changes in Chuck town.

IF you can find a facility with indoor or at minimum, covered dry stack, jump on it. It saves so much environmental wear and tear on your boat your head will spin.

My $0.02.

Some of my boating buddies with your size boat (290 Sundancer) dry stack at Rivers Edge Marina up the Ashley River.

+1, this year I was able to move my boat from an outdoor, covered on three sides area to indoors. Even on my little boat, the difference is dramatic.

Not Mt Pleasant, but friends keep a boat at Charleston City Marina, seems like a nice place, they like it. Also had some friends at Isle of Palms Marina, they liked it, right on the ICW north of Charleston Harbor, easy access to Dewees Inlet.

Rivers Edge is nice facility and the only one I know of that will dry stack small twin engine cruisers. It is a good bit up the river though.

Thank you for all the great feedback. Rivers Edge does seem to be the best option even though it is a little further away. If the move is made, I see that my boating experience will be a little different than my current one. Which is not a bad thing.

Thanks again!

Jason,

Also have a look at Ripley Light Marina Dry Stack near the mouth of the Ashley. Note that Ripley's offers outside dry stack storage only. Rivers Edge offers both, I believe. Personally, I would burn a little extra gas an go with an indoor slot at Rivers Edge.

When Rivers Edge opened in there most recent version they were trying to sell some form of equity memberships or dockominiums including the drystack. I think this went south with a lot of other creative finance ideas in 2008. Because of this sales push its a pretty nice facility with newer docks. There is a great public ramp right next door if that matters. I launched my 330 there in 2015.
