Official 380 Thread

I was afraid that might be the case. I'll start getting some bids

DEFINITELY get several prices. They can vary greatly, and make sure that you compare apples to apples. For example, the clear plastic can be different grades, as can the actual canvas material.

The previous owner of my boat had a longer aft bimini made for increased shade. That's also an alternative to the camper back. Probably a bit less expensive too.

There is an outfit called "Bus Depot" (busdepot.com) that sells everything you need. Even the black oxide coated nuts. Don't waste your time navigating the website, just call with the lengths, and the nice lady will help you to see the picture on the site to verify your needs. Good luck,

Don

Thanks Don.

Much appreciated

How hard is it to get the arms off? (not the blade assembly)

Remove the nut, and the arm is on a splined shaft, as I recall. It just pries up a little at a time. I had no problem. I replaced the entire arm and nut on mine, since they were starting to rust on the edges.

Does anyone know the location of the LCD-style systems monitor interface module on a 2000 380 Dancer? This boat has Cats. A picture would be great.

I'm having a hard time finding a place who can make the camper canvas/frame for our new-to-us 01 380.

This looked to be the ticket: http://rnr-marine.com/Canvas.shtml

But, it seems like they don't cover this boat.

Thoughts?

Sea Ray made the canvas for the 380 in house. That's why you don't find it listed on this site. They did outsource the carpet, hence it's available.

Follow up to the windshield wiper question last week.

Here is what my arm attachment looks like...

Hunted around and found two wiperblades that would fit inside this connector - I'm sure there are many more but these are the ones I found. Sears sold Windex...

And Walmart sold Michelin...

So I finished reading the entire thread last night while watching the election results. I've read about the TRW valves, the "soft" blocks, the refrigerator replacements, the flat screen installs, old electronics, generator swap, hot water heater element replacement, cutless bearing swap and various leak fixes. I've also noticed that a few folks no longer have their 380s any more (Most have moved up.), but some have had them for years.

I have an appointment later this week to view a 380DA with 3126 Cats. So I will ask the same question many people have asked already in this very thread, but with a slight twist.

What do I need to look for on this particular vessel that might want to prevent me from hiring a surveyor and move on to the next 380? I plan on bringing my coveralls and exploring every crevice I can get my face (or phone camera) into.

Depends on your time frame...oil samples are $20/ea in bulk from Blackstone. Take oil samples of the engines, trannies and genny. Take about a week to ten days. Then sea trial. Watch for temperature changes at cruise and WOT, make sure you are hitting expected speeds at expected RPM...if you aren't, you may be looking at more trouble than you want to assume.

I haven't had great luck with surveys, but I usually learn something about the boat I didn't know.

I'm in no rush, I've just begun the search process and have mostly ruled out 340DA (salon settee too short for either of my two boys), 360DA seem to be in short supply.

I also get the feeling that the 380DA is better off all around with the 3126 CATs -- OPINIONS PLEASE.

The guy to reach out to is quality time. He's the only diesel 380 owner I'm aware of. He has since sold the 380 but he's a great resource.

Seadawg - If you have a CAT dealer nearby, sample kits are $13 each for oil and transmissions and $32 each for antifreeze. The soft blocks and TRW valve issues should be long gone - they showed themselves early in the engines' life and CAT replaced them. When you pick up your CAT SOS sample kits, take the engine serial #'s to your CAT dealer and he can run them for service records as well.

I had a 2001 380 with CATs for about 7 years, so I am happy to be a resource as well. The 380 with CATs in an excellent cruising boat with long range, lots of torque, and a comfortable cruise speed of around 22-24 knots. My 380 took me from St. Pete, FL to the Keys and Bahamas many times with barley ever an issue.

Sea dawg I have a 2003 cat powered 380 for sale here in New Jersey.

I never know which thread my 38 belongs to but anyway a few pics of the annual outside maintenance, enlarged trim tabs and new underwater lights.

Just lifted - has been in the water for 16 months. Micron 66 worked great - hull was quite clean although I had been doing a bit of coastal cruising - only had a diver go down once back in November.

In the shade shelter ready for work to start - hull has been acid washed at this stage.

16.03.2016 Boat on Hard.jpg

New enlarged tabs (now 26 x 15.5 with 3 inch drop fins), new underwater lights, new Micron 66 (sprayed) and Propspeed. Although not shown I also installed a 5 blade bow thrust prop (Q-prop) from Side Power.

24.03.2017 - Enlarge Tabs and New Underwater Lights.jpg

Compound and polish using the Dulon system - gelcoat chips all fixed. Ready for another 16 to 18 months in the water unless I pull earlier for new Veem props. I'll keep the topside more regularly maintained having just bought myself some polishing equipment and pads.
