I am buying a 1999 sea ray with a 3.0L mercruiser 135hp engine in it tomorrow and I want to change the oil and filter right away before heading to the lake but there is no manual with the boat that I know of. Can anyone tell me the type of oil this engine takes and what the part # is for the oil filter? prefer to just get a FRAM or something from walmart if possible. THANKS!

I may have found it...a FRAM PH30? OEM part #14957. does that sound right?

Don't get the Fram. Junk. I've seen the inside of these too many times - even personally seen a couple where the pleats were not fully glued together - allowing unfiltered oil to go right past... thereby defeating the purpose of a "filter". There's even an old saying about Fram: "Friends don't let friends use Fram". :smt001 Your boat is too important to try and skimp and save a couple of dollars once a year.

The Merc oil filter for you engine is about $10 - pretty cheap insurance to make sure you get the right thing... especially as it's only once a year. You may find the Quiksilver brand at Walmart - it's the same thing as Merc (Merc "branding" can only be sold at Merc certified stores). Same goes for the oil.

Now, that's not to say that Merc is the be-all-end-all of filters and oil. They're not. But it does make it easy to know you're getting the right product. Mallory and even Sierra are good alternatives for filters. I don't know if Mann or Mahle makes marine oil filters, but I would trust them in a heartbeat.

quicksilver part #??? type of oil I need?

I don't know the part number, offhand. I think there is a parts catalog on Merc's website - you can check that out. I have no idea if the number crosses to QS. But the filter box will say something about 'for use with 4cyl and V8 engines'. The oil is 25W-40. You can get the syn blend, if you want, but it's not necessary for your engine.

Are you doing the lower unit gear oil, too? Don't forget to get new seals.

After this weekend I'm replacing the impeller and gear oil.

Make sure to use the Merc high performance gear lube, it's blue. Don't use the outboard gear lube. Walmart has all the stuff you need, except the impeller. You can order that online or from a dealer.

gm short filter, fram ph30, merc, 14957, 54111,32716 omc, 173232, Volvo penta835440-9, sierra 18-7824

you can also use long filter ph13, merc 52731, 35-16595t1, 35-802885Q, 14957, 0mc 502901, 173233, Volvo 430143-8, sierra 18-7876

mercruiser oil is 25-40

If you have a napa close by get a wix filter or napa gold I use them all the time great filters. Napa also has their own brand of marine fuel filters including the racor and diesel filters. I can even get the air filter for Volvo diesel from them.

Strictly as a note for clarification, the regular gear lube (it's not specific to OB or I/O) CAN be used in an Alpha drive (not Bravos). It is a little less expensive, BUT I do typically recommend the high-perf stuff (synthetic) since it can deal with some water intrusion, whereas the dino oil can not.
