My 2004 280 Dancer generator is hunting and maybe it's time to clean the carb. Has anyone removed their carburetor from a Kohler 5e? If so, what is the best approach, since it is very congested. The water tank is butted up to the generator and was thinking of removing it. Any help here is appreciated.

I replaced the carb on my Kohler 5E last year. It's a pain to get to but I wouldn't pull the water tank completely. If you remove the table storage and disconnect the straps that go over the top of the water tank, you can slide the water tank to the left. I managed to get enough room to get the breather/cover off the left side and the carb was easier to get to after that. It would be a heck of a lot easier with the tank out completely but getting to the screws on the straps behind the tank seems nearly impossible. Good luck.

There's an idea I hadn't thought of. I was in there tonight trying to lift the carb out and something seems to be holding it in . I think I have everything disconnected but it won't lift up and out. I'm also having a heck of a time getting the throttle and choke linkage out of the holes. What's the secret to that? I'm guessing I should empty the water tank to make it easy to slide. Then do I need to remove the black cover completely? I appreciate your experience and your help. Thank you inadvance.

Brandon,
Did you end up doing this project? I'm in the middle of it now and couldn't get the carb out. i'm going to try and move the water tank over to the left some.

Curtiss,
Sorry for the delay, but I've been out. Yes I did complete that project with very little trouble. To remover the water tank, you will need to cut the water intake line and vent line. I simple use a brass fitting to splice them back together. I took off the strap that holds the water tank down and simply turned the tank enough to allow access to the side of the generator. ( empty the water tank make this much easier)

You might replace the anti-deiseling solenoid while cleaning the carb on the generator. I think that was the issue on mine causing the hunting. Working fine now with replacement carb, solenoid, and new plugs.

Do you have the part number for this anti-diesel Inc solenoid. I am just about to order a new carb and choke repair kit. Probably would be a good idea to replace that solenoid as well. Thanks.

Here are the pages from the parts manual. If you want the full manual, PM an email address and I can send you the documentation I have in PDF. -Mike

I know that as the fuel shut off solenoid. It is supposed to come with the carb. I do have the manual. Thanks for the information. Had not heard it called an anti-dieseling solenoid before though.
