We are at Ft Pierce City Marina for a while and Captain Rusty was kind enough to invite us up to Sykes Creek this morning for show and tell. He showed us lots of good stuff related to the L590 and L650 that they build there and was very kind to us as usual. Here's Mrs. ZZ (Laura) with Rusty.

Sounds like an interesting day. Were you able to see any of the fabrication process? I've always wanted to see one of their plants just to see what improvements & differences have been made to the automation processes compared to a local builder in the PNW that has invested heavily in robotics for simple things like routing portholes, thru hulls etc.

We did. Saw most everything they do. We really enjoyed seeing the top side and hull of a L590 being worked on side by side separately. They had the topside tied to a hoist as it's just about ready to lift it onto the hull. Sure wish I could pull my boat apart like that to work on stuff.

Very cool!

Were cameras not allowed on the inside? Read: I want to see more pics!

Yes, Sea Ray is very generous with photography in the plants. As you might expect, there are some areas that are off limits for photography, like the CAD studio and most of PD&E. I've been there several times and have pretty much had the run of the place. The place covers acres and acres, so you have to have a guide. Sea Ray invited several of us down for Yacht Expo in 2011. If you want to see photographs inside the mfg plant and process, here is a good starting place:

Wow. Those are great pics and descriptions. Thanks for sharing.

Had the privilege of a private tour last year, with Rusty, what a great guy. Sea Ray should be very proud having such an employee.

One of these days I want to do that. Maybe this spring we journey to the north.

Looks a bit chilly in FLA Captain! I need to get my butt back there and cruise through the plant! Maybe I can piggyback on the Atlantic City trip????

It was my absolute pleasure to have Bill and Laura visit us at Sea Ray Boats yesterday. I also wish each one of you could stop by whenever in central Florida, except that I am often not here. If by chance you find yourself down here in sunny Florida, hint-hint, please PM me and see if we cannot make a short visit happen.

Markus, I owe you a phone call boss, and Commodore, you are more than welcome to drive any vessel I am on (will just give me more time to visit with Kathy).

I will once again tell you guys (and Lady Brenda) how cool it is to be a part of a fraternity of such diverse owners. Because I live and grew up underneath rockets going to the moon and beyond, it stands to reason I am a huge fan of the US Space program. Bill, Laura and I were talking space and I told them I just watch the movie Martian....Laura asked if saw the Voyager satellite in the movie to which I concededly replied, movie heck, I saw the actual launch of the real Voyager........Laura's reply; "me too because Bill and I built the real one"....whoops, sorry Laura, I'll be quiet now.....anybody else know any Satellite Scientist??? too cool for my school!

Thanks again ZZ13….hope to see you two in Miami soon!

Miami Boat Show is only about 3 weeks away! Come see us on Collins Ave.!!

Capt. Rusty

As Rusty stayed, Laura and I are from a space history. My dad worked on the Saturn V in Huntsville during my childhood. Laura and I were both engineers for the design and build of the Mars Pathfinder rover that was featured in the movie The Martian. It launched in 1997. Voyager was a little before our to time - I must have misspoke that.

It was great swapping space launch war stories with Rusty. Brought back a lot of good memories.

I misspoke because I remember both missions back when the US had a Space Program and were undisputedly #1 in space exploration....all of our success in going to the moon and returning safely and going where we haven't been before (Hubble, Mars, and now even Pluto) was accomplished by a generation which had just finished fighting two wars on either side of the world. These men and women then sent people in space and did so without the use of a single computer....any of us still remember how to use a slide-rule? Could ya calculate and land on the moon safely with no calculator or computer? Yep, The Greatest Generation ever !

Would love to continue our conversation Bill but Laura has to be there too!.....

Rusty, one of these days you're going to get a PM from me. I soooo want to meet you and have you show us around. I can't think of a more pleasant way to spend time in FL.

I will definitely get ahold of you the next time that we are in Florida, Captain Rusty! Mrs. Strypes and I would definitely like to check out Sea Ray as well as meeting the infamous Captain! Cheers

Absolutely nothing famous about me, I am but one of many dedicated Sea Ray employees....there are hard working people here whom make me look like a rookie and I have 31 years onboard.

Please PM me or contact me via this site or email. I would enjoy meeting every one of you but need to make sure I am around when you are.

Looking forward to it !!

Capt. R
