So im new to the boating world but i just got a 1975 240 srv weekender for free. It does have some minor issues. it didnt have a engine cover or rear seats also port side windshield smashed, engine runs but overheats and i currently have no reverse. floor and transom are solid. cabin is in good shape a couple scratches on hull but no major damage. I was wondering if i could get any help? Does anyone have any pictures of what the engine cover and rear seats should look like? where can i find parts? Does anyone have any advice for a beginner?

Thanks,
Carlin

The overheating may be due to a bad water pump impeller in the outdrive. When they go bad, the drive can't pull lake water up to the engine.

The outdrive is a pre-alpha and they are very durable units. The Ford engines were good units as well.

Did you ever find pics or info on the engine cover and rear seats? I'm looking for similar information. Thank you.

Mine was the twin and the engine cover/seating were make from plywood and gusstets, seat was mostly the motor box with 2 side panels. Backrest was covered foam that was full width

Hi Carlin,

I owned a 1975 SRV240 Weekender for many years and all I can say is that it is a great boat.

It is no speed demon, it's heavy but what a great riding boat. Ours had a Ford 351 with the Mercruiser 233 Drive.
The engine had 1385 hours on it when we bought the boat, and we added another 600 hours. Did not burn any oil, and always was reliable.

The previous owner took great care of the boat and did run run the engine hard at all. It did have Bennett trim tabs and they helped alot. I chenged out the impellor in the 233 drive 2 times over the 600 hundred hours of operation, but that was all that I did.

I would suspect that your engine is over heating because of a bad water pickup impellor in the drive.

I will have to dig in my picture books and see if I can post up some pictures of the interior of the boat. We had to completely redo the cockpit interior as all the seats and side panels were badly sunfaded and ripping.

As far as it not going into reverse, might just be in the shifter, or shift cable.

Ours was the Searay "Yellow" hull and white top. Some aggressive rubbing compound cleaned up the whole boat. Took all the teak off refinished it and the boat looked great.

I will see if I can post some pcitures for reference for you when I find them.

Enjoy your new boat - take the time to fix her up, and you will enjoy it.

I have a 77 240 srv that I have been bring back to original. I had pulled off the starboard outdrive(and the port side too) and replaced the waterpump and some seals and didn't put the washer back on the shift shaft seal and that prevented the drive from going into reverse. I also had the shift cable at the helm come out of it's bracket and it felt like there was not shifting into reverse, forward was fine even though it really wasn't,I put it back into its slot and that fixed that. So I ended up taking the drive off again as I found water in the oil. So went and replaced all the seals along with the billows, gimbel bearing, shift shaft seal and of course the forgotten washer. Back on again and began to adjust the shift cable at the engine. I finally got reverse to work good but am just a hair off getting forward to shift in properly, I will let the marina mechanic bring it into where it has to be as long as he doesn't want an arm and a leg. I have been working on this boat for 9 months and will get her in the water as soon as the Vegas wind drops below 20-30 mph for sea trials. Theres lots of imfo on how to adjust the shift cable on the web.

Finally got the boat in the water and stbd engine is getting warmer than I like and port is a bit warm too. Plan on pulling it out again and replacing the thermostats, new radiator caps, flushing out the old coolant, pulling the heat exchangers and flushing them, and check that I didn't crimp off the outdrive waterpump hoses going to the engines. From there it will get more serious if not fixed. All that will be left is the engine water pump, head gaskets, and exhaust system.
