Official (1982-1988) 270DA Thread

Well, no pics tonight, but progress is being made. After pulling the metal part of the rub rail, thru deck/hull screws on the starboard side were exposed. There were short, small rivets through the hull only (these were cut off on the inside) that held the interior wood to the inside of the hull. The screws ran through the deck and hull, into the wood and then, large rivets went through the metal rubrail and into the wood to hold the rubrail in place. It took all day, but I got the new wood installed and new screws installed through the deck/hull joint. The metal rubrail still needs to be installed, when my helper is available. The port side should have been a mirrir image and therefore somewhat easier, bu no, it was another story. It appears holes and countersink recesses were drilled for screws, as on the starboard side, but in actuality, rivets were used to connect the hull and deck. There were no screws on the port side in the area of the V berth, but further back along the hull deck joint were a combination of screws and rivets. The same large rivets held the metal rubrail in place.

So, on the port side, I added screws installed as on the starboard side. Talc has been liberally applied to the inside at the joint and along the shelf. we have had some rain and so far, no leaks. More rain is due and I need to detail the deck and hull, so I'll delay reinstalling the rubrail as long as possible to be sure the leaks are fixed.

By the way, a section of the vinyl rubrail insert is cracked and beyond repair (it's always something). Does anyone know where a replacement can be had?

Thanks, for the tip. Now I am not sure about the size. There are two options, both TACO products. One measures 15/16" overall and 5/8" across the curve. The other measures 3/4' overall and 1/2" across the curve. They are too close in size to see an obvious difference. My old rubrail is very stiff and hard to shape to it's original dimensions. I'll assume the smaller version will fit in the metal channel, but it might be too loose. Of course the larger model may not fit/. Any suggestions? One thought is to contact the distributer and ask for samples.

West Marine also sells the TACO line, but has nothing in my local store to check against.

I'd ask for samples just to be sure.
The smaller version fits, at least on ours. Not nearly as stiff as the original but it works.
Our regular mooring does not have it contacting anything and at times when it does in our travels it has not been a problem.

Hello.
I've just purchased my first SeaRay, a 1985 270DA and I'm trying to figure out a few things about it. It is a West Coast salt water boat with twin 350 ci Volvo Penta 290a drives. From what I can tell this may not be the stock configuration for this year. Has anyone had experience with a similar configuration? Is there any documentation or prop chart metrics out there?
It sat in the water for two years with no maintenance. The legs are currently in a rebuild process and the props have completely corroded. I'm trying to get an idea of gear ratio and proper prop size.

Cheers.

Sorry I can't be of help with the with twin 350 ci Volvo Penta 290a drives, hopefully somebody else will chime in.
I may be of assistance with any other part of the boat if ever needed.
Good luck with your info search!

If you can, share some pictures in this thread - we would like to see them.

Sorry about the late reply. I've been dealing with a bunch of bad news around this poor boat. It turns out the legs are too far gone at this point. They need a complete rebuild. The previous owners had a work order in last year to have the boat pulled, cleaned, painted and zinc'd but it never happened. She sat for two years unmaintained in salt water. So the legs corroded and let seawater into the gearing. The marine shop wanted to examine the drive shafts from the motors since they found a bit of corrosion on one of them but since they are not the stock motors and take up way too much space to work around, they both have to be pulled out. I'm simplifying the story a bit here, but...

This combined with the control cables and hydraulic steering ram needing replacing, the shop recommended not to proceed with the repairs as the cost outstrips the value of the boat.

Might anyone have a recommendation on how to proceed with either parting this boat out or selling it as a donor boat?

Cheers.

Good day. I was wondering if any of you have "modified" your stock swim platform ladder? The admiral is tired of stepping on the round tube at the bottom and would like a flat step added. I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to do this, or is there a good replacement ladder system that works well? There is nothing wrong with the stock ladder we have, but a flat step would be nice. I look forward to any help you can give.

Thanks!

Sorry, I can't help you - our oversize platform and ladder are custom made aluminum for scuba diving.
I'm sure there's something out there, hopefully someone else will step in.

Well, it's official. I just bought a 1988 270DA. THe survey came back solid and my mechanic gave the engines the nod. High praise from him! I am sure to have a whole heap of questions such as what are the two toggle switches in the head marked shower and head. I flip them but don't observe anything.

Here is a photo as we are leaving the slip I bought her from and heading over the ramp to tow her to Toronto.

Here is one of the interior.

Last one is the boat with full canvas.

Thanks for the welcome. We have had the boat for a week now and have had her out on the lake twice. She seems to be performing well. I had her on plane at about 3200rpm. Does that sound about right?
I have to figure out the best use of the trim tabs. Never had these before. Any advice would be welcomed.

3200 is good - I am running best performance at 3800-3900 with our 3.8 V6's.

I only use the tabs to help get on plane when we are loaded down and keep her running level (port to starboard).
When running I use very little if any tabs, I also bring the drives up so they are pushing more parallel to the hull and not trying to push the bow down so much.
Rough conditions drives down and add tabs as needed. You'll get the feel of it.
A really big help in performance was moving heavy objects like my tool box up under the forward v-berth.

Thanks. That is what I suspected. I am going to have to fiddle around and see what the best use of the trim tabs/power trim is. I haven't got a picture handy but on the aft port quarter there is the city water hook-up and then a spigot just above it. It doesn't have a handle attached. I am thinking it is for washing down the deck but wonder why there isn't a handle.

Any ideas?

Does it look like a factory install?
Maybe the previous owner removed the handle so it does not get bumped/accidentally turned on?
Or plastic and they broke it off?

New to the site as of today.
I have 1982 270 Sundancer with twin 5.0 liters.
I will try to post some pictures later this week. I found one picture on my photobucket account
