I took the wife, kids, and in-laws down to the mouth of great bay to check out the sand bar and Holgate beach. Other than a slow, wet ride back across the bay, everyone had a great time.

Nick, that looks like a nice area but I have a question for you. You give your location as "United States". Your boat is licensed in NJ. Where is Great Bay, and why be so vague? We all enjoy looking at pictures and hearing about trips, but we also like to know where the boating locations are in case we ever want to take our boat there.

???????

I wasn't attempting to be vague, and it's no secret. Great Bay is in NJ, about half way between Atlantic City and Toms River. I keep my boat at Viking Yachting Center on Bass River. It's about 6 miles from the marina to the mouth of the bay, and another 6 or 7 miles across the bay to where the pictures were taken. The sand bar is just east of Fish Island, which has an old burned down fish processing factory on it. Holgate beach is on the southern tip of Long Beach Island, right on the ICW.

from another trip.

What did the USCG guy think of your shirt? Neither of you looks very happy. Did you pass your inspection?

Ironically and despite how that picture looks, he actually said he liked the shirt, and we had no trouble at all. The USCG guys were professional and courteous, and since all my gear and paperwork were in order, we had no problems at all and passed without issue. They were a little surprised when he asked when I had last been boarded and the answer was never.

Are the Coast Guard boarding boats without reason? In Sweden they can board the boat if they suspect that you are under influence of alcohol or driving like an idiot. But that almost never happens.

Yes, they do it all the time. In Tampa Bay we have a training center so they do "safety inspections" all the time. I get boarded about once a year or so.

Apparently the Coast Guard can board any boat at any time for a "safety inspection". They only check that your mandatory safety gear and paperwork is present and in order. I'm sure if you failed to produce any of the required items, or the operator "appeared" intoxicated, they would be more than happy to dig further. Now that I think about it, it's really no different than if a cop pulled you over for no reason, but apparently it's how they do it. Given the amount of stupidity I see on the water, I really don't have a problem with it.
