My wife and I are considering getting a larger boat and keeping it up in Michigan city. I was hoping to get more information from some of you that are familiar with the area.

Pros/cons of port Authority marina and B&E marina?

Where do you go on a typical weekend?... Are there sand bars or shallow areas to anchor for the day.

Would you recommend another port or town if commuting from Indianapolis

We are planning a trip up in August to explore the area with our boat so any advice on the area would be appreciated

Thanks

Dan

I spent a bit of time searching again and it seems New Buffalo is the go to place for a short trip.. But what about just anchoring out for a few hours? Is there a spot close by where you can anchor and just stand in the sand ?

I slip just down the lake in Portage and make the drive from Indy every weekend. Spent a year in Hammond as well before here.

Better yet, come up here sometime, and I'll show you around. We can take the whaler and I'll show you the places to anchor, we can even hit New Buffalo...

Thanks for the information and the invitation. We are planning on bringing our boat up for an extended weekend in the next few weeks. We want to look around the area and hopefully head over to Chicago. I want to keep the boat in a transient slip at one of the two marinas and stay at a hotel in the area.... Probably the casino.

Why Portage over Michigan city or Hammond ?
Hammond was nice and well kept. Safe too, great security, but in an iffy neighborhood so they needed it. Right on the lake which was nice, but during storms when the wind/waves kicked up the boat was beat. Not a lot for the kids to do, only the yacht club. Sandy beaches on both sides of the marina.

Portage is a twenty minute idle ride down the ditch and the marina is down in a bowl. Storms have no effect on the boat. Marina is a few years old and no security like Hammond but it's in a much better neighborhood do you really don't need it. Heated pool, work out facility and close to stores in town. Boaters beach is a quick boat ride (warm water discharge).

Portage is also a thirty minute shorter drive from Indy. Didn't consider Michigan City due to the further drive and two little kids. The zoo is nice but it's only a forty five minute boat ride from Portage.

I reserved a slip at the port authority marina Thursday thru Sunday, August 1st weekend. Sounds like I picked the busiest weekend of the whole summer with the boat races going on. Should be fun... Sounds like a lot going on.

My parents are on the 200 dock as well. Look for the old guy.

Kidding, but if you see a 450 DA with Incognito on the transom, that is them. Duane and Bert.

I'd choose New Buffalo over Michigan City in a heartbeat -- better restaurants (that are walking distance from the harbor), no "spew" from the power plant, and it just has a more nautical/"vacationy" look to it. Also, if you're the beach anchoring type, the water is extremely clear between NB and the Warren Dunes; it's great anchoring there.

Hopefully the new scrubber will eliminate the power plant spew....I thought of NB many times, but the people up there are just plain weirdos. Plus too many "FIPs"

That's quite a sweeping generalization, don't you think? "Weird" is subjective, unless MC has set a standard of human normalcy and I'm just not aware of it yet. :)

Also, I'm guessing as a downtown Chicago resident myself, that likely uncreative "FIP" acronym (which presumably includes an F-bomb and "Illinois" in it) applies to me. :) It's okay, I don't mind...I'll somehow manage to live in this awful city... :D
