Yikes.......$104 a Barrel !!!!!

I have done the fuel can routine a few times.

I can't speak for small (under 24' boats), but it is definately a chump move for a medium to large size boat. On the one hand, tossing in 15 gallons from cans saves me. . .like $15. I like saving money. On the other hand: It is *hard* not to get gas all over the place.

The only time I have ever done this is at the end of the season to empty the cans. . .or if I am a tad low on gas and it is too late in the day to hit the fuel dock.

And be thankful for that. There was one bozo, a cop of course, who thought he was smarter than everyone else and that the rules didn't apply to him. He filled his 26' from portable containers. And at the same time spilled gas on the dock and in the water. He did this at night so the management didn't see it, but everyone turned him in because his neighbors didn't want him burning up their boats.

Best regards,
Frank

Well this bozo only use diesel in it, and I think that's safe.
Gas is very dangerous, and even the Duramax flo 'n go is a rather safe system, you always get dangerous fumes from gas.
This system has a pump handle that allows you to eliminate spillage and overfills by stopping and restarting the flow of fuel.
I have 2 x 130 gallon tanks in my boat, and with my very economic Yanmars :smt001 it make sense for me to use this system.

I agree that if you want to use gas in portable containers that this is very dangerous.

From a news story yesterday:

U.S. average retail gasoline prices have reached a new high of almost $3.20 per gallon and will likely jump another 20 to 30 cents in the next month, worsening the pain of consumers struggling to make ends meet in an economic downturn

I drove through a local marina yesterday and noted that regular gasoline fuel was $3.42 and Diesel fuel was $3.41...virtually identical...and both prices are before the $0.10 BoatUS discount.

On road diesel here in CT is now $4.19 to $4.39... :smt100

Holly buckets, where is the economic stimulus check?

Yea.. where is that check?!! That will easily pay for the gas needed in my truck to get me to the bar and have a little change left over for a beer!! Or better yet, I could use it to pay for the cost of gas to get the boat from the launch to the slip... maybe. Might be stretching it a bit.

Actually though...If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China. If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs, and neither will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America, so the only way I can see to keep that money here at home is to buy beer, spend it on prostitution, or play golf since those are the primary businesses still in the U.S.! :smt043

If you believe this... CNBC just reported that Goldman Sachs is projecting oil to be $200 a barrel by mid summer and gas at $8/gallon....

What was I saying about fuel being the cheapest part of boating? Filling up Four Suns will be a $4500.00 operation...

Gulp....

That'll tank the economy...

That I see as highly unlikely because that will put the entire world into a depression and there will be no one to buy that $8.00 gasoline or be able to afford food, heat their homes, or buy much of anything.

To me the bigger concern is where the current state of affairs with high fuel prices reaches far enough into the wallets of the people where they have to curtail their spending to cause a real major recession which, the way things are going, is probably this year as I see it.

I'm trying to cause a panic... work with me brother...

Surely CSR is monitored by the Feds...

Ok, will do........ But I am not very good at golf. ;-)

I wouldn't answer your door the next time your door bell rings.:smt043

Whether it's $110 $150 or $200 a barrel, isn't it comforting to know that we still don't have an energy policy in place even though we were promised one umpteen times starting back in the 70's with the first Arab Oil Embargo? I guess we don't need one right..........just let free enterprise bring everyone to their knees?

By the way this other bit of news from CNBC.

"Some analysts think oil could go higher still, possibly breaking through $110, although there are expected to be dips below the $100 mark too."

Also from CNN today..

"Expect to pay upwards of $3.75 a gallon in the coming weeks as prices at the pump catch up with record crude.. "

So, we're looking at what, $4.25+ a gallon at the docks this summer.. holy sh$t...!

Three thoughts come to mind right now...
1) All that will be left on the water will be those darn jet skis!
2) I Better stock-up in the vodka and get some more acrylic martini glasses for the dockside parties...
3) Hope all making the BIH run signed up to get a rebate on your fuel cards...might pay for some new electronics by the time you get back!

Someone needs to come up with a sealed micro-fission reactor... I'm going nuke... Refuel here at the shipyard every 20 years.

OMG!!!! I just started reading this thread and have decided that I am having lots of boat parties we will all just drink lots of Capt Morgans and make sure everyone brings an oar.

We may get to fill up the boat, but we may be eating ramen noodles all weekend.

Anybody remember the Sea Ray test bed for a single diesel powering two electric motors. They ran it in a 38 or something like that, and it gave close to the same performance as the regular powered boat with about 40% better fuel economy. I read this in one of the boating magazines several years ago, too bad they didn't get something like that out to us.

Someone must have made a mathematical error.

Yes, some boats do this. I have clients who are builders that do this. The reason is not for economy. In the end economy is a wash UNLESS you have a separate source for electricity like solar panels or Gary’s nuclear reactor.

Oh, it take a lot of solar panels to make a little bit of bower.

Sneaking around the dock with a hose after you get everyone liquored up is not an option??? The gas would probably be less expensive than the liquor any way. We are talking about boaters here.
