Looks like a member edited all of their post to "Bye" which is fine. Their prerogative, but it could make a useful thread no longer useful. Any consideration to putting a cap on when a post can be edited?

A time limit on the ability to edit/delete posts is a good idea. Don't care what the time limit is, but it should be something like 2 weeks or so.

A caveat would be if we had a thread that had it's first post constantly updated current info such as gas prices at a particular marina.

It's interesting you guys agree on this. I can see both sides.

Yet, being able to control your online persona is something that I've always liked and respected here. There are other boards that I'm on that take control of it. It's refreshing and admirable that the Admin allows this freedom.

Now, realistically, it only works to some degree. If someone quotes you in their post, well, then you lost the control.

But, it seems we live in an age where everything we say and do is there for eternity. I remember the days when a conversation was a conversation and not a transcription.

Anyway, something to consider...

I vote to keep it freely open to the poster to decide.

The reality is this site is cached and archived elsewhere...even if someone edits their post those who are industrious can dig up the original content if it was posted for a reasonable length of time for the posts to be crawled and cached. Make it easy on us and keep the content.

I don't think edits should be allowed after more than a few days...if someone chooses to leave the community so be it, but their contribution should remain. Maybe change the username to "Delete User" if they so choose but keep the content, its what makes this site great. An alternative is to allow limit edits but also allow users to see original posts.

Where?

I don't think anyone is archiving the whole internet except perhaps the Feds.

In all seriousness, I doubt 99.99% of users would ever delete content that would benefit another member. Mostly it's going to be things they might have regretted saying in the first place.

There are a number of organizations archiving most of the net.

The Internet Archive is just one example, it has 663 versions of clubsearay.com from 2004 to present. They may not have the crawl depth to completely cover the forums...but others do.
