About this time each year, we start planning a trip to Bimini in the early summer. So, let's get planning for 2014!

This year, I will suggest that we look past Memorial Day. The last 4 out of 5 MD trips ended up with bad weather. June doesn't have any holidays so I wanted to ask those who want to go for their input. please post your feelings on a date for the trip.

Thanks

Woo Hoo! If this thread wasn't started by Jan 1, I was going to start it. :) I'm in!

School is out for my son May 29th this year, so any time after that and I could take the whole family. As of now, I'm open pretty much all of June. I'll probably be taking all of the summer off so I'm available whenever. I'm also possibly available earlier (like April or May) if anyone wants to take a reconnaissance trip ;)

Oh, I guess there ARE some restrictions - I'm usually involved in an extended family non-boating holiday trip that surrounds July 4, and August in general is bad for me (other obligations, school starts, etc.). So, anytime in June would be great for me, as would possibly some weeks of July that is NOT the week of July 4.

I am in for sure this year. Being new to the area last year I just couldn't find the time to make it. We are definitely going this year was looking at signing up for a couple of the "Flings" since we have never done this trip. I have kids in school so when school is out we are in for a extended weekend for sure.

Joel, how many kids do you have / ages? I have 3, 2 boys 14&16, 1 girl 13 we are always looking for families that enjoy boating and water sports to hang out with around the water.

I agree with June. Also, I would prefer we stay away from holidays. I prefer to be our own crowd.

June or July with another boat. Both of us have kids. One is 5 and the other 8. Planning on Bimini Sands.

Came back from Bimini Sands on Monday. Perfect weather and had the place to myself. This is the water Sunday afternoon right at the entrance. They've done a good job marking the entrance this year.

It is just too bad that Bimini Bay (Resort world) will have a cruise ship docked out front with that ugly ass cruise ship there and all those a#$hole people from Miami destroying the place. I wish it wasn't true but unfortunately for now it is true. Bimini water, the island, and the people are great but now that Miami has moved in, I feel true Bimini is a thing of the past. This summer with the cruise ship running will be a test to see how they cope with the influx of a#$holes. Just my opinion of course would love to hear from those that go there more often.

Any reason you guys don't want to make this trip during spring break? Schedule wise it seems like a good option, since kids get a week off. Weather wise it might not be soo bad, considering that May doesn't give you a good break either.

Is the norm that you have so much better chance catching good weather in May vs. April?

Just a thought.

I make 3-5 Bimini trips/yr and usually stay at BBGC. The last trip was disappointing. BBGC was dirty and outside the property you could certainly feel and see the pressure you describe above. Plus, there's a damn cruise ship sitting there. It's just wrong.

My trip to South Bimini was a first for me. I wanted to stay at Sands, check in on South Bimini, figure out the restaurants and so on. Sands was nice. Cleaner. Floating docks, no wakes and wind sheltered. The knock offs are that the check in at the airport is a PITA compared to BBGC. Also, there isn't much dockage so it's going to be hard to get space in the summer. A small nit, lots of bull sharks around the docks.

I'd go back to Sands but unless I'm going with a big group I'll probably stay away from BBGC and North Bimini.

That was the sentiment I am also hearing from many others. We HAD planned on going but instead we are focusing on the Abacos and maybe even stopping in at Grand Cay for some REAL Bahamas island.

Alex, north winds from Nov-April or May really bring in some heavy seas and quickly. For example, Monday was flat 1-2' at about (guessing) 8-10 second intervals, today is forecast for 4-6' at 5 seconds, (very rough) , Sunday 3-4' at who knows the interval. Seas change quickly and get rough very quick during this time period. Great for Sailfishing and some dolphin (mahi) in the mix but not good for those that just want to cruise to Bimini on a planned event. Has to be spur of the moment like I believe Boulder GT3 did.

+1. It's just a dicey time of year to go. Probably 80% of the time you'll have 4's in the forecast which means you'll see some 6's. 25% of the time you'll see some big mixmaster waves in the Stream. Fine if your boat and the crew is fine with it but for most it's no fun. Very tough to plan around though. On last Saturday AM, the forecast for Tuesday was 2-4's with 6's on the nose. By Sunday it was a 2' forecast. Actual- you could have water skied back from Bimini. It goes the other way just as quick too.

I did leave spur of the moment. it was clear Sunday at 11AM and I was off the dock at noon. In Bimini at 2PM. Tied up and checked in by about 3:30. Drinking a beer at 4. It was just a quick trip to learn Sand and set the baselines on the boat for the year.

Randy & All,

We are going over to Bimini twice in June. Both trips will be with the Bahamas Tourism Boating Flings. The first one is 6/5 to BBG. The second one is 6/19 to Resorts World Intl <formally Bimini Bay>. Hope to see you over there!

Larry

hello to all in forum:

I was hoping to make this trip last year but was cancelled at last minute due to weather. school should end by first week of june after that im in. I am transporting the boat from tampa to the ft Lauderdale area on memorial weekend so it can stay longer for that trip anyways.I have a 10 year old and will see if hes interested on going, he likes dry land better. I couldn't go to the Sapona on that trip but I have watched sooo many videos that it looks I been there already, I did enjoy the honeymoon island for 2 hrs I was there I really will like to spend a good nite on my boat or island if the weather is good, I even told by nite time to look over the north pole for a great show of glowing stars. my name is Jonathan and it was nice to write some words.

see ya soon.

Welcome to CRS Jonathan. As warm weather approaches, we are all getting the itch to head east. We'll start looking at specific dates soon and then a roll call.

Hi randy how you been?
Has the group come with a decision when its going to be the trip to Bimini yet?

Good thanks, and you?

Nothing specific regrading the trip yet, I guess we're waiting to get closer. How about you? Any dates that work well with you?

Well I am planning to bring the boat to the ft. Lauderdale area by mid May to spend some time on Memorial Weekend, so I need to know in advance about the time i need to reserve a place or leave her at a Marina or Boat Storage. The boat mechanic had a space for her behind his house on the water but it is already taken so im running out of time, not being from east coast makes it hard from this end. I will keep looking meanwhile I will wait to see a date. I have seen boaters choosing July and August to head East, so lets see how it goes.
