Greetings to all,

It’s that time again to stop thinking about cold weather and start planning our summer trips, as well as booking vacation time off.

If I’ll say that our first official Northeast Flotilla 2013 was a huge success, it’ll be an understatement. So, let’s not delay any longer and get the CSR Northeast Flotilla 2014 thread rolling.

Here are couple of observations from our last year’s Flotilla:
1. Everyone loved Block, so it's obviously goes on top of the list for ports of call. But, what I've learned about Block is that once people get there, they simply don’t want to leave, myself included....LOL. Thus, for this reason I propose to make it our last port.

2. Everyone enjoyed very much the raft at Shelter Island and loved the feast at Taylor’s Island. Therefore, I think it might be a good idea to keep this as our starting point again this year. The only thing I would change is staying for 2 nights in SI. It was too much effort to set the huge raft and it was too short of a time frame before we had to break it apart.

3. We need to consider the fact that most people have to travel quite a bit of a distance. Thus, IMO, we should limit our trip to three ports allowing enough break and time to enjoy our stay in each port.

If you guys agree with my observations, then (just as one of the options) to simplify our approach we could have Shelter Island as port #1, Block Island as port #3 and we’ll need to pick only one port in between SI and BI (for example Norwich CT, Essex, etc).

On the other hand, this only a beginning of a planning stage. We like exploring new places and open for any suggestions. The only thing we need to keep in mind is that the place should have enough room for 20-25 boats and/or option to grab a mooring or anchoring, in the event if we would split in to two groups where one goes to marina and the other stays moored/anchor close by (just like we do it in Block). When thinking of a new port #1 to do instead of Shelter Island, one of the primary criteria’s is that we need room (preferably outdoor) where we can fit around 100 people and the food for our feast.

WHEN:
The “CSR Northeast Flotilla 2014” will be held on the week of August 9[SUP]th[/SUP] through August 17th
The “Feast of the East” is scheduled for Saturday, August 9[SUP]th[/SUP]
and will be held at Island Boatyard & Marina: http://www.islandboatyard.com/index.html

WHERE:
Itinerary:
Port 1 (2 nights) 8/9-8/11: West Neck Harbor (Island Boatyard & Marina) http://www.islandboatyard.com/index.html
Port 2 (2 nights) 8/11-8/13: Mystic (Mystic Shipyard West) http://www.mysticshipyard.com/index.html
Port 3 (4 nights) 8/13-8/17: Block Island (we’ll have a raft in the anchorage area and other group will stay at Champlins).

You need to call and confirm your reservations with the following marinas:

Update as of 04/08/14:

I just got off the phone with dockmaster at Island Boatyard & Marina and as of now they are totally full for the weekend of our feast (8/9-8/11). There are few people who didn't confirm their reservations yet, but as of now we have 16 slips assigned to our fleet and the rest of the group will have to utilize the anchorage area.

What are the options for new folks who're looking to join us? We have 3 choices here:

1. We have few folks who booked their slips, but are willing to give them up to those who need them and will be willing to go in to anchorage area instead.
2. The other option is to join the raft 2nd half of the group.
3. Last but not least, you can always try finding a spot in the anchorage area and drop the hook on your own.

So, if anyone is in a situation where you couldn't make the commitment earlier, but still wish to join and use option #1, let's get the communication going. We have only 16 slips to work with.

VHF Communication:
69- primary channel to communicate with the group.
72- backup channel if we get too much noise on 69.
16 - is always on. This will be the channel to use in case if we don't get response on 69 or 72. Once the communication is established with a vessel we'll ask to switch to 69 or 72, whichever will be the better option at the time.

NOTE: This page will periodically get updated with important information. Please check here once in a while.

FYI:
- We're ordering custom made t-shirts for the group. Please let me know what sizes, color and count you'll need for your crew.

Link to the sample of the t-shirts (post #566):http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/64375-CSR-Northeast-Flotilla-2014/page57

- We're using new company to do a professional areal photo shooting from air. They'll have a small plane meet the flotilla in all 3 locations and perform photo-shooting. I'll need everyone's input if you wish to participate in purchasing the pictures. Total cost for the group for all high resolution images around $960. The more people will participate the less it's going to cost per boat.

FAQ (this is mostly for new people who didn’t have a chance to join us in the past)

Q1: How do I sign up?
A1: Simply post in this thread or PM me stating that you wish to participate. We'll need the following basic info, which will be placed on the first page in the list of the participants (table offerings can be left alone for now, as it will be addressed much closer to the Flotilla date):
[CSR name]: [crew names], [boat info], [Traveling From], [Docking in Port1], [Docking in Port2], [Docking in Port3],[Table Offerings]

Example:
"Alex F": Alex and Jelena, Michelle(17), Daniel(9), "Inspiration" 420DB, LIS area, Raft, Marina, Raft, TBD

Q2:
How’s a Flotilla different from a regular Rendezvous?
A2: The group will not just meet up at a marina, but we will travel from port to port as a group and our destinations will be mixed between marinas, mooring and/or just anchorage in a beautiful cove or designated anchorage area.

Q3: Am I obligated to stay with the flotilla the whole week?
A3: Absolutely not. Anyone should feel free to join the flotilla and take off anytime they desire, or their schedule allows. No hard feelings, we perfectly understand that you have other commitments/obligations.

Q4: Do we have to travel together from port to port?
A4: No. It’s obviously a lot more fun (and not to mention safer) to travel as one caravan, but if you wish to run on your own schedule (e.g. arrive to a destination earlier and cover more things once in port), feel free to do so and we’ll see you there.

Q5: What we do (activities wise) once settle in a port?
A5: We always try to come up with a list of fun activities that might interest most people. But, don’t forget that this is your vacation time and if you wish to do something totally different, by all means, we’ll sea ya later.

Q6: How’s dining arranged for the rest of the trip (after the feast)?
A6: In the course of the whole week we’ll have mixed ways of dining. There are nights when we just want to have BBQ party (either on the rafted boats or the marina), but for the most part we’ll dine out as a group in fine local restaurants that will be able to accommodate our group. Thus, advanced reservations (at least one day in advance) will be necessary. But, as always, if you’d like to have your own arrangement, feel free to do so. No hard feelings.

Q7: I would like to join the feast but I don’t think I’ll be able to bring my boat, how can I get to the Island?
A7: For now, let’s assume we’re doing the feast on Taylor’s Island (Shelter Island). You’ll need to catch a ferry on the mainland that goes to Shelter Island (Coecles Harbor) and park your car by Coecles Harbor Marina. Then, we’ll have someone picking you up by dinghy and dropping you off later in the evening or whenever you’ll need to head back. This is just one of the examples and options people have used in the past. The bottom line is, if you’re willing to join us but need some help, we’re willing to help.

Q8: How marina reservations work during the flotilla?
A8: After we (as a group) decide in what marinas we wish to stay, I'll compile a spreadsheet that will list all the boats that were ready to sign up at the time, and the list is sent to a dockmaster of each marina. This ensures that a dockmaster reserves the slips for our group trying to keep us together. The next step is for each captain to call the dockmaster directly and confirm individual reservation by providing some more detailed info and usually a deposit charged to a credit card. This works for most marinas and the only exception I would say is the Champlin's (in Block), due to their 28 days refund policy and due to the fact that good number of boats from the flotilla will be staying in the anchorage. Those that will be staying in Champlin's will need to make the reservations on their own.

Those are just few that came from the top of my head. Have more questions? Feel free to ask.

Cheers,
Alex.

Let's try somthing new - My vote is to have the feast on Cuttyhunk there are primarily moorings there, but a small area to anchor and a small marina too. Then hit Oak Bluffs for a few nights - Plenty to do in MV and easy to get around on the bus - Oak bluffs would be a good stop because its not as far as edgartown (and a short hop from Cutty) and has a choice of slips or moorings (and you can raft on the moorings too). Availability shouldn't be a problem as we'd likely come in on sunday when others are leaving. Then head to block wed or thurs before all the crazys get there and get a good spot to build the raft.

If you are looking for options for SI try Mitchel Park Marina in Greenport. It's $2.50/ft weekdays and $3.50/ ft weekends. All the slips are transients. They have a park right at the marina for the party. Mondays they have concerts in the park. Easy in and Easy out. You might also consider Watch Hill RI. No slips or moorings but a good anchorage for the raft. Cute little town to walk around. Cuttyhunk would be a good place for a party but the beaches aren't very good. They have piling moorings that you can raft 3 boats off. If it's windy be carful because a lot of amateurs anchor there and it's not unusual to get hit.

Mike,

We love all the ports you're proposing. MV is always a destination we'd love to come back (and do ever since we've gone the the first time). However, if I was comparing Shelter Island to Cutty, there's no way we'll get the same. Cutty is way too congested. There's absolutely no way to build a raft of 20-25 boats. Let's also don't forget about plan B for the feast. When we rent Taylor's Island we have full access to the house, so in the event if the weather is not cooperating at least we can move the party inside. From what I remember, there's nothing in Cutty that can be used for our plan B.

If MV will be considered as one of the destinations I would suggest make it before Block (for the reasons I've mentioned earlier ). However, I think we'll have an issue with docking in Oak Bluffs. On the other hand, if we go to Edgartown we don't need anything. There's great anchorage right before the harbor and it's right by a beautiful beach. We can simply build a raft there. The distance from there to the town is the same as from the mooring field. If you don't want to use your dink, the water taxi picks you up for $4 a head, they run until midnight.

Napatree would be cool for the feast and raft but no real plan b there either. Mystic seaport could be an option too and the anchorage just past the seaport has plenty of room. I know nothing seems as "ideal" as Taylor's but I just think we should at least consider somewhere else.

Is Newport out? If not there is the park near Ida Lewis (with pavilions), Fort Adams (large lawn and park areas), and maybe even the newport harbor hotel grounds (I could ask) All of these places have facilities and Plan B options and the festivals are over by then and space shouldn't be a problem -

Mike,

Please don't get me wrong. Nothing is out and any suggestion is seriously considered. I'm not suggestion Taylor's Island for no reason other than based on our experience, it offered exactly what we were looking for, meeting all primary criteria for the feast. In regards to the traveling distance, I think majority of the gang has enough comfort level cruising to all places we're discussing here. I'm up for exploring new places and enjoying new experiences.

Funny you've mentioned Fort Adams pavilion. Last time I passed it I thought that it could be very nice option to have the feast here. Scenery wise, this place is hard to beat. I just don't know the place enough to make the call that all logistic will work out fine. So, it brings up all the basic questions (if we're talking about the park by Fort Adams):

- Is there a marina in walking distance? If not, what's our means of transportation?
- Is there a dinghy dock?
- Is there anchorage or mooring close by for those that wish to be closer to the nature vs. staying in a marina?
- What's the charge to rent this place?

Napatree is pretty good spot, but as you said, there's no option for plan B and I don't remember seeing a good place for having the feast. Having facility that offers basic stuff like tables, chairs, grills makes things a lot easier. I don't know where we can have that in Napatree.

All great suggestions, don't hold back, keep them coming.

Any honorary "past Searay owners" welcome or just current Searay owners?

Welcome back, John.

It's no secret that you have the pass for our event. No excuses this time, though.....

Mike,

Greenport was on our last year's itinerary. However, not many people were too excited going there. I think quite few folks from the gang have cruised to Greenport in the past and from what I hear it's not a port that jumps on top of the list of preferred port for the flotilla. I personally would skip it this time, especially that I was one of very few boats that actually made it there last year.

BTW, since you're from MA, do you have any interest in joining us? After all, it's the Northeast Flotilla. It doesn't get much closer to you than that. :smt001

- Is there a marina in walking distance? If not, what's our means of transportation? Thats a tough one - its close by water but not by foot (west wind marina would be the closest - I will measure the distance next time i'm there) - those staying in a slip would likely come by dinghy - just like we all have to do at Taylor's
- Is there a dinghy dock? Yes
- Is there anchorage or mooring close by for those that wish to be closer to the nature vs. staying in a marina? Yes - bretton cove is full of moorings(some private, some rental) some of them are "docks" where multiple boats can moor the cove is protected from the prevailing winds - the designated anchorage is also right there and the "main" mooring field is across the chanel.
- What's the charge to rent this place? Don't know - but if the group likes the idea, I would be willing to do some legwork when I'm down there (my boat is in the water in Newport now)

It all sounds positive. In that case I would vote for it.

Guess what? It's time for another spreadsheet........

I'll list all proposed ports and let's just vote for them. The only thing we'll have to specify is which port will be used for the feast and that will have to be port #1 for obvious reasons.

We are going to Block twice in July. So I don't think we can make the whole trip. If plans are made for Newport we may drop down and meet everyone. It sounds like fun. And another trip to Block wouldn't be out of the question.....

Thanks guys. My vote is Block for sure! Great location, great amenities, restaurants, dinghy access, marinas for those that want them, anchorages…..

Sounds good. You know the dates, so now we just need to iron down the itinerary.

Alight guys,

Here's the spreadsheet with the attempt to sort thing out regarding our choices for destinations. I had to split it in two section, simply b/c not every port of our choice can be used to have the feast there as well. So, as you can see the top section is dedicated for the port where we would be able to hold the feast and the bottom section represents a list of ports which we just want to visit (regardless whether we can have the feast there or not). When thinking about your choice of port for the feast, please don't forget that usually it's our starting point, so it may not make a lot of sense start with very remote location or Block (or subsequent port may not happen...:smt043)

Also, the way I've placed my votes (multiple P1s) was done with consideration that we need around 3 ports for the flotilla. It does not represent the order. I think once we determine the port winners we'll sort them out in logical order.

If this makes sense, let's hear your votes and comments/suggestions.

John,

Does your vote mean that I can place you on the list of participants?

Regarding your vote, as you can see from my previous post there are two sections. Does your vote for Block mean that you propose as just another port/destination or do you also propose it as a port to have the feast?

I will 100% attend Block Island as a destination. I trust you guys on where you would like to have the feast from your past experience. I am just happy to see you guys in Block Island. I will go with whatever you vote Alex if you need to put me down for something. Obviously I would pick Block Island for selfish reasons and not to "where the best place is"…...

I'm up for block 100% as well. I meant to go in 2013 but didn't commit and wished I had. Also I can provide a plan B if you choose to go to Mystic. We could pile the dinghy's on my dock and use the house or there's also a yacht club very close to downtown that we maybe could use. I'll look into it if it looks possible as we get closer.

Sounds great, John. It's good to have you come along with us. I got basic info for including you on the list. But, I'll need some clarification on whether you'd like to be rafted with us or will you pickup a mooring or anchor nearby and just unite with the group? Crew - once we get closer to the date, please let us know the crew names (besides keeping things in order, Greg will need it for the name tags).

I will review and add my vote in the matrix, but think that Cuttyhunk or MV is too far for My Dinghy........
Think Block or Newport would be the outer comfort zone.
