Porthole leak? How to fix

tightening screws from the inside is not going to stop leaking windows. the only thing that stops water from getting into your boat through the porthole windows is silicone. if your gasket is bad, that's one thing, but all the screws on the inner assemble just hold it to the hull, they will not stop water from coming into the porthole frame. tightening the screws on the inside will probably spin the nuts on the outside and chew up your silicone, causing more of a leak.

Stopping a leak involves sealing the origin. If the origin is bedding gone bad, the porthole needs to be re-bedded and nothing less will cure the problem. If the origin is at the dog screws, re-bedding the porthole without tightening the dog screws is equally as useless.

Understand completely. Your situation required rebidding. The OP situation may not require such major surgery.

He stated the dogs were loose. His dilemma may be a 15 minute fix, or a multi day one. The cure for each case needs to be decided on a case by case basis.

to the OP. you stated the latches (dogs is the nautical term) were not tight. There is a small set screw 1/2 way up each one. They are what actually tighten the glass to the gasket. It's easy to miss if you are not looking for it. Try tightening those first before tearing out the entire porthole. That may solve your problem.

I'm curious about this product, Bed-it Butyl Tape, being used as a sealer between the windshield and the decks instead of using caulk, such as Sikaflex?

Would it be an application or would the exposure to sunlight be a problem?

Thoughts?
