410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I don't know that there is any way you can figure that out. Someone once said about a gallon per hour.

But, the benefit I get (cold food, A/C, computers, Internet, etc.) outweighs however many gallons I burn.

I have heard that too. Do you typically sleep with your genny on if you are on the hook? Should I be worried about anything by doing so?

I use the The 1GPH figure for budgeting, but that's the max that it CAN burn. (assuming its tuned) It's hard to maintain a full demand for very long (both AC's, water heater, stove, converter etc) so realistically, the average burn can be closer to half that.

I have spent the night with the genny running, but I found that the CO concern took away any comfort that air-conditioning at night added.

HOT TOPIC....CRUISE SPEED...

I have CATs. I Have Aetna Digital Tachs. I Record speed with GPS

I typically cruise with 1/4 - 1/2 Water
I Usually top of my fuel to start trips and refuel when I need ~ 200 Gallons....so no less than 125 Gallons on board at any time.
I keep my bottom and running gear clean. I dive my own boat so I don't rely on a diver....I check my own work.
I have 150" of chain anchor rode.
My refergerators are empty, but I have TONS of 'Stuff' on board...always...and TONS more when we trip.

I generally cruise at 2325-2425 RPMs. I start with full tabs and relieve them once on plane. I judge how much I relieve the tabs by paying close attention to my speed and tachs. As soon as I see a drop in either....I'm done. I generally make 22-23 knots. Depending on wind and sea conditions, I have seen a low of 21.xx and high of 24.xx. I keep very detailed logs of my hours, distance and time. I also keep a detailed log book with all my fuel fills. I "average" 1.1 sMPG.

All the time.

However, I do have the three factory CO detectors plus 3 additional CO/Smoke detectors.

That said it appears that statistically you have a better chance of dying just by remaining tied to the dock:

You didn't get that photo!?!?!?

Still no but if you have it available I would love to see it!

Very interesting statistics... Sounds like I will be fine as long as the CO detectors are working.

Sleep with it on the hook all the time. I keep my cabin doors and hatches closed with A/C-or fan on. On your boat the exhaust should be far enough aft, and your door seals rather well on the 41.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Full load = 1GPH
1/2 load = 1/2 GPH
1/4 load = 1/4 GPH
these are good guidelines to follow up about a 13.5 KW Genset. For Onan gen sets you can find this info on their website and in the operators manual.

Excellent point. It was left unsaid and implied, but, ALL the hatches, portholes and cabin door are tightly secured when running the genset.

OK Ken...I've been trying like the dikens to get these photos to you but you just don't seem to want them. Everytime I ask you if you want them, you shrug it off. Well....maybe the other 410DA owners will want to see them....so here they are.

This is for 410DA owners with CATs only. The top bolt to the ram that lifts the engine hatch rubs against the copper raw water tube that runs along the side of the motor. From the factory, the bolt is installed with the head facing the stbd side and the nut is on the port side. When I had my boat surveyed in 2006, I had to have the copper tube replaced because the chaffing was to a point where the tube was alomost penetrated. The CAT mechanic reversed the way the bolt is installed. He also added a few washers for some extra space and a hunk of rubber hose over the copper raw water tube to further the protect it from any future chaffing. The only drawback to installing the bolt this way is that if you have to remove the ram, and hence the bolt, you will also need to remove the copper raw water tube.

Here's a few pics.

Looking aft at the top bolt installed on the ram. Note extra few washers for spacing...

Looking forward from underneath the top of the ram. Note the rubber hose added to the copper tube and that the head of the bolt just barely touches....it really doesn't touch at all...the pic is decieiving.

Sounds good. I feel better knowing a lot of others use it overnight as well.

Hahahahaha! Thanks Dom! I will start by doing this but I also want to brace mine better since this structural design is horrible. The "fins" that the bolt goes through on mine are bent slightly towards the port engine as well that does not help whatsoever. I am going to get some input from our resident engineer and will follow up with some repair photos when complete.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

If I had a 410, I would replace that lower mounting bracket with on made from stainless steel, then weld a 1/2" spacer on the inside of the leg toward the engine and thread the spacer and face off the end of the bolt so you would end up with nothing protruding from the inside. I bet if you engineered it properly you wouldn't move the ram inboard any at all........look at the inboard spacer in Dom's photos.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I just gave the folks at Coastal Climate Control in Bowie, MD the $$$ for a DP2600iAC Vitrifrigo. They had it in stock. Should be here in a day or two.

The thermometer in my Nevercool has been hovering around 50 degrees in the frig and my ice cream is melting, so it's so long to the Nevercool. We'll see how much of the boat and frig I need to take apart to get it in the cabin.

Take lots of pics....like I have to tell YOU to take pics!!!

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I should have put $ $$$$.$$ for the damn thing. The measurements are almost dead on, so hopefully it will get into the cabin without oo much disassembly and slide right into place.

Yeah, right. And I am winning the lottery and the mailman just brought be 1,000lbs of gold bars and osd9 is gonna grow hair...

I can grow all the hair that I want to....just not on the top of my head.!!!

Thanks Frank, I shouldn't need stainless steel considering my climate but I will be re-engineering a poorly engineered item. I have some ideas but want to run it past our resident engineer. He designs pretty much everything for everyone in our club from inverter setups to a hydraulic swim platform he designed and built for a 400DB.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Here's a THREAD that the 410DA guys should read if they haven't already.

I did have the same issue outlined in that thread. Fortunately, I only had minimal issues from the propblem and I was able to remedy the problem before any major rusting occured.

This fix was two fold.

First a set of Whale non return valves were fitted on both drain lines exiting the hatch gutters to the overboard thru hole....seen here below....

IMG_0180.jpg

Second is that the gasketing was removed and refitted to follow the contour of the hatch gutter...seen here below...
