460 DA Owners Thread

As I was reading through the posts I saw where someone replaced the cockpit icemaker with a refrigerator. If so, can you please tell me what kind you found to fit. I had my local guy look and all were too big to fit such a small area. With the kids it is nice to have a fridge up so you don't have to go down to get drinks. Thanks for any input.

Jemeyedoc - Did you buy David Brown's 460? We looked at it, along with some others - what a beautiful boat!

Yes. It is a great boat and well cared for by him. We got it at the end of summer so did not get to use it a lot. We have had a 410 sundancer and a 480 sedan bridge over the years. This boat seems to fit our needs great. Do you know if he got a new boat yet?

James

One unit is mounted forward of the Genset, the other unit is mounted aft of the Port engine, making getting to the Port fuel filters a real mission!

I am going to look and see if it is possible to mount one or both in the transom lockers.

I would hope that one can be taken off the boat completely, if the only purpose they serve is to prevent against power surges, I would be happy to just have one on the line that supplies the battery chargers.

Graham

Hi Graham,

I don't know enough about the purpose of the Iso Transormer other than that it is a safety feature that Sea Ray began installing on our 460DA model for the 2002 year. Your second unit is placed where my GHS swim platform hydraulics are located or where the bow thruster batteries are. This may be an add-on from a previous owner? These are electronic units and I would probably leave the main unit where it is ahead of the genset. The transom locker location is a wet area when you consider the city water and wash down spigots are there so I wouldn't agree with a relocation to that locker. I don't know what the purpose of your second unit is but maybe you have a second 110V power input? The main unit handles the 240V 50amp shore power.

He got a beautiful '01 510 in November. We are trying to decide between 420 - 460 - or 510 ourselves. We are not enamored with the new "square-rigged" full windscreen/hardtop post '07 models, so we seem to be gravitating to the '01 - '05 models (I now consider them my "retro" look with their curved windscreens and hardtops). At first I wanted to avoid the forward isinglass, but I just don't seem to like to full, square cornered, windshield "look" on the new boats. Sue is not comfortable on a DB bridge in rough weather, so a Sundancer it will be...

We are thinking TN River in Chattanooga...what is your Marina?

We are at Island Cove Marina. There are a lot of people from Atlanta and other areas at our marina. The Tennessee River is a nice lake to boat on. Good luck on your boat searching.

Okay guys, it's time to add a cockpit tv and satellite. Has anyone done this on their 460? I am thinking KVH m1, Seaview dual mount and 32"? And I am looking for a mount for behind the helm seat. I searched some posts but it seems no one has purchased a cockpit mount recently and FP doesn't seem to have them anymore. Any ideas, thoughts?

Russ,

I found this mount at FP. It's the one I am going to buy to mount my TV for the upcoming ocean runs!!

As far as the Seaview Dual mount goes, that is what I have. You will obviously go for the open array model VS my Radome model. Just a point on this mount. My mount was used for 3 full boating seasons including the most recent one. This past spring the mount was fine as I was up there doing some additional caulking and waxed it up real nice. This January when I was removing my tops for shrink wrapping I found a HUGE blister in the powder coating around the hole where the light bar goes in. That means that this occured in the past season.
I contacted Seaview and they stated that they had no issues with the process when this was mfg or they would have seen many more returns coming back. To their credit, as a courtesy, they offered to totally strip and reapply the powder coating to the mount if I send it back. This was for no charge too! I feel that this is more than fair by them but, if I knew it was only going to last 3 seasons I might have continued shopping for a different mount back when I did the installation. Just an FYI!!

Oh they do still have that mount! Great, ,I couldn't find it, I'm ordering it now. I bought my last Seaview dual mount almost five years ago. I didn't have much of an issue although I will tell you a rep from Seaview at the annual Defender sale sold me the model to fit my Garmin and M3 and I had to re-drill the wholes anyway. Doing this flaked the powder coat and I thought it would cause problems but it didn't. However at the base I think it has started to bubble recently so I don't believe they have not had problems. At least they stand behind it.

I was meticulous with my installation and used all of the supplied teflon washers that accompanied it. There was zero metal to powdercoat exposure and that is why I found it so disheartening last month when the blister was spotted. If I could find one, I would go with Stainless to alleviate the future redo again. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available! The white powdercoat looks better than SS if you ask me, I'm just thinking about longevity. It is great that they will stand behind the product and that speaks volumes about the company.
The silver lining to this is that I will have my arch painted to address some blistering on that while the mount is getting reworked. I am also removing the Glomex base (where the biggest arch blister originated) and will be mounting my secondary GPS antenna there!
Another note about the dual mount. I needed to purchase an adapter disc to mount the M1 to the DM as it was originally designed for the M3. I am not sure if they have adapted the mounting interface since then or if you will need the disc also.

So you are going to send yours in? I have seen stainless, both Seaview and scan strut are making them but I have not seen a dual mount yet. Yes, I will have to get a disc to adapt. It appears that they are changing the mounts to a modular system. I'm not sure if I want the new or old version. Also now I noticed I can save $500 if I just mount it lower and to the left and mount a dummy dome on the other side what do you think about that?? I'm not sure how any of it is going to look. A dual mount pushing that open array forward with a small M1 dome on top but all centered or two little domes, one on each side? And I have made fun of people for putting up a fake dome just for looks! But who would have thought that it would save money?

I ordered the mount and apparently so did several others. I got a call from FP asking me what was going on, a run from all over the country was started from your post. The power of CSR! I told them about your link and that they should be a sponsor.

Russ,

IMO, this kind of project belongs to category where proper installation take priority over money savings, since functional side take priority over the looks. I think the way you had it installed on your 370 was one of the best solutions (if I recall it was very similar mount to what I have). The more I think about the project the more I feel that going with the SeaView mount you had would be simpler solution. The idea of dual domes is great but you'll have to raise the radar to avoid signal collisions or blockage. Also, the idea of a dummy dome is to house the other antennas in there. So, initially you may have a good idea and have GPS, weather and maybe another small antenna in there. But, if later on you would want to add something that won't fit in the 2nd dome you'll loose the slick and stylish look like we see in those European yachts.

Here are some pictures for comparison:

Here are few pics on the dual dome installations:

Here is what a small single dome looks like on a 460. I thought it looked goofy at first but after a while it really did blend in and I barely noticed it since its so small. Worked perfectly.

As with anything, it's a personal preference. But, I wouldn't have one installed on a side. In this case a dummy dome to balance it would be the way to go.

Alex, that's a great idea, never thought of putting antennas in the dome.

Thanks for the pics Carver, that's very helpful. As I thought the radar is up high like mine, that might work but I'm still not sure which way to go.

Alex, because of the open array it is different from my 370. I like to remove the canvas, all of it but it would be higher.

Hi James

I am still none the wiser, however I take your point about the rear locker being a wet area, however my boat has two rear transom lockers, because there is a Passaralle mounted off the centre section.

The boat only has one 220 volt shore power inlet, I am going to have to investigate further where exactly the Iso units are wired up, and will report back when I know a little more.

My boat has hydraulic lift, hydraulic passaralle, bow thruster, stern thruster and enclosed genset, so it really is a little crowded down below, I would like a little more room around service items.

I will take some photos also when I am there in three weeks.

I don't see an issue with open array. You just need a different SeaView mount for open array radars. Look at my friend's Formula 40PC (his mount could be even the same as mine). As you can see they take all the panels off as well. I don't think you would remove the bimini top, though. Just removing the panels will have no impact on the looks or functionality.

That's got a funky hard top, mine is just an arch and I do take off the bimini all the time. The base of the mount will be on the arch but the platform that the open array will sit on will be 25" out from the arch and exposed when I take off the bimini and the side panels. Not a huge deal but if I don't have to have that thing hanging out there over my head it might be better.
