We all worry about the weather being good during boating season but what about $4 or more a gallon for gas? I run our Gas Dock at the club so I see the rollercoaster on our costs and we only charge .25 more per gallon above our cost. I guess if gas hits $5 a gallon I'll be using shore power to charge my batteries more than running the 454. When can we fire the US Energy Dept? They have 1800 employees and have failed our country and have done nothing as far as I know. Gas prices have doubled in the past 3 years, Mike.

The high gas prices drag down the whole economy. There are a lot of ugly happenings going on with our energy policy. We just bend over and take it but eventually things will come to a head. API says our expensive ethanol ridden gas is a great value and market forces are creating the price increase. Its hard to know who to believe when everybody is proctecting their own interests and at the end of the day the consumer looses. I'm all for free markets but there needs to be a restoration of integrety to the leaders of many sectors of our economy not just energy.

It won't stop me from boating since I have a smaller boat and I budget for $5 gas and then I have maybe a little left in my budget for maintenance. Beyond the $5 mark I won't be running the engine as much.

I'd feel lucky that you were paying what you were paying before. Gas was over $4 a gallon here at the marina already last season and the season before.

I was forced to fill up in Burnham Harbor in Chicago last season at $5.39......

Here is a useful tool for Lake Michigan boaters, the prices on there are from last October now obviously and will be changed each week when the fuel docks re-open.

An overwhelming majority of Americans have no idea of the Environmental Protection Agency's impact on our daily lives. They have become one of the most detrimental and powerful agencies created by politicans to supposedly do great things. So far they have crippled our nations ability to be energy independent. If you want to have nightmares and stay up at night read the book The Naked Communist by Cleon Skousen (1959). Far too much of this has come true and is now evident. Fuel prices will not prevent me from boating but it sure will curtail my spending on other items and services of profanely priced items in our economy. Recovery???? Becoming doubtful.

All part of "The Plan."

Big oil isn't the big winner. Our country depends on this type of energy and the cost of the products will continue to rise with the cost to produce. Last Dollar hit the nail on at least one head when he mentioned the EPA. As regulations tighten in this country it costs billions of $$ to operate and buy equipment that allow oil companies to continue to operate and this only 1item of cost. Everyone has their hand in the bucket from the guy that builds the equipment to the guy that sells catalyst or whatever to maintain it. Of course the oil companies pass the cost along. They would. E out of business if they lost money. Why do you think refineries across the country are shutting down? They run until the cost of government mandates get too expensive then they lock the door. Drives up demand, imports and unemployment. We are regulating ourselves out of home produced energy.

It would be great if the oil economy went back to simple Supply and Demand driving prices. Keep politics out of the equation. Big Government has been in bed with the oil companies for all too long. Let's start punching holes in our country and bring our own oil to the surface. Let's get back to keeping it simple.

Must be the President and his big oil buddies getting rich on the back of the common man! :smt018

funny that was the catch phrase for just about every Obama supporter 4 years ago!

I usually just grit through the pain at the pump, I have a "boat" fund that builds all winter just so I can blow it all summer. I will say it's times like this I'm actually happy to have the SBC over the BBC in the Pachanga.

As has been said on many occasions in this forum by boaters far more experienced than I, fuel costs are only a small part of the costs related to boating with maintenance, mooring and storage all being far more costly.
Take some satisfaction in the knowledge that we are already paying more than $5 per US gallon up here in Canada.
I can't wait to start pouring it in the tank and burning it in those sweet big blocks.

My prediction....
all media hype
everyone knows fuel prices drop in an election year.

Oil prices are up .5 today at so far $102.33 and rising. Why would a leader not help his people by opening up reserves or pipelines to ease not only the pain here but else where. Oil in this country on federal land belongs to the people. Get but don't put it on the world market which is what was done with the reserves.

I think most of us participated in this discussion a few weeks ago when the thread begin with the news that the number one export of the USA is petroleum products. Now as prices have continued to rise we still have no answer or no indication our nation has a true energy policy that works for everyone. The bottom line is the EPA will not allow drilling in Alaska tundra nor will it allow pipelines from Canada. The EPA is also shutting down coal production because new permits for coal mines are now curtailed for the most part. When the price of electric doubles in the coming years we will have something else to complain about. Americans are too soon to forget bad things, just somehow block them out of their minds. If we as intelligent informed voters don't bring about "change" then we are doomed.

It's all part of the "plan"....read the book

I remember when I was a kid and my Dad would complain about filling his tanks on his 390 express. Gas at that time (15 years ago) was about $1.50 on the water. :smt101

I can remember boating in the 60's when we could fill BOTH 6 gallon tanks for under $4.00 including the oil and ski all day. Back in that time gas wars would begin between stations and you could find gas a 18 cents a gallon for a few hours. Gas stations would also hand out nice coffee mugs with a fill up. Now when you buy gas you are "mugged" by the oil companies. We should all not take this too seriously because right before the election gas will significantly decrease in price for a while.

Over the last few years, we have seen the gas price cycle several times (economy improves, gas prices rise, then economy stalls leading to a price reduction) several times.

With our new to us little puddle jumper. I could care less if gas went to $10 agal. :smt001

If gas prices goes higher than that Dee would have to get a second job.

As I said before I don't miss them $1.000 dollar fill-ups. :smt038

By far my biggest expense is fuel for the boat. And I don't pay any where near $5 per US gallon here in Alberta.

In fact the high price of oil helps keep my income taxes to the lowest level in Canada, and keeps us from having a provincal sales tax. Oil is just like any other free market item. It is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.
