Wood question

All, thank you for the info, I can't wait for the weather to clear up so I can get to work on her..


I have a small stock pile of aluminum angle collecting dust in the corner of my garage, can't I use the aluminum?????

I keep asking because I don't know....
 
Don't use the aluminum. Do it right with the correct wood.
 
Well a buddy of a buddy has access to some Marine lumber for me (next door neighbors' cousins' best friends' little brother).

Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on it by tomorrow afternoon and maybe I can get started again after Christmas :)
 
I would not have a problem using aluminum if it fills a structural need. Aluminum might be a problem in salt water due to corrosion and if attached to dissimilar metals especially underwater then corrosion is also an issue. There are many parts on everybody's boat that has responded to you that is aluminum. Aluminum may be more difficult than wood to work though.

The reason I was asking about aluminum, the wood pieces that I removed were attached to the boat via aluminum tabs.......as far as working with aluminum, I can weld it myself and have a buddy powder coat it for me to prevent any corrosion...there isn't any corrosion on any of the bare aluminum tabs that are through-out the boat.

I am better working with metal than I am wood :smt115

That is why I kept asking about using the aluminum......
 
now I can't find any "Marine grade" lumber locally.

Sorry but I find that hard to believe. Tennessee is a center of boat building in this country. I suggest you ask a few local boat builders where they get theirs. For that matter the Sea Ray factory is in Knoxville and they must have a supplier or know a local supplier. There is also a Sea Ray plant in Vonore TN. I'm sure their customer reps could point you to a supplier.

What grade is the Aluminum? Is it 5000 or 6000 series? If not I would stick with the wood.
 
Ike, thanks for the info, you have to remember, I don't really know where to look.....I was trying all the local lumber yards/home improvement stores because that is all I know :) (I am a car guy trying to get into the boaters world)
