Who said we were doing away with strategic defense contractors? We are discussing consumer goods. MM

Respectfully, Monaco, that seems to me, to be "spitting hairs", regarding this dialogue. The manufacturing ills, suffered in our nation, unfortunately, appear to be very fundamental, that is at least, one of, the major reasons "we" are not able to quickly, rise out of these economic doldrums. Again, IMHO....

Our society has progressed beyond the industrial age to the information age. Lack of industrial production is the new norm. We must protect our common defense with strategic support of what we need for military production. MM

Who, works where, in the information age?

Lack of industrial production is the new norm. For whom? Most of the population is not quite "landed gentry", yet.

We must protect our common defense with strategic support of what we need for military production. How would this be accomplished, by government?

Just think of all the jobs that were not even a thought of 20 years ago. Check out the most of these jobs on the links below. The big surprise to many will be the manufacturing hiring, but it is not overpaid lug nut installers they hire, they want computer experts to run CNC machines.

We still manufacturer more than any one, but China is a close 2nd, automation will continue to reduce the need for simple manual labor. Unskilled labor will be mainly in the service sector in the future.

The government with constitutional responsibility to defend our nation should maintain strategic contracts to maintain resources in the event the entire word was at war with us. Material not available in the country should be stockpiled for emergency use.

See above in red. MM

Yes.

Look at Apple... they make all their stuff in China. Seems to me they add a lot to the job market in the US. Over 12,000 strong and growing like a weed last I heard.

Those aren't 12,000 screw on lug nut jobs either.

How about Google?

Maybe you are a greedy business owner, or maybe an x union member who got kicked out, or maybe tryed to become a union member to have a decent wage, benefits, and weren't able to become one. Maybe you should move to china and try to make a decent living there. gotta go now my 15 minute break is over.

I bet you were one of those kids that walked the halls in high school that partied, picked on kids who studied and drove a muscle car daddy bought you. Welcome to life... loser...

I keep reading about these "union horror stories" in this thread and again I have to call BS. I have the unique experience of being on both sides of the table. I have been in the union for over 30 years now and I have been a union contractor for 10 years. This rubbish about not being able to fire bad workers is nothing but lies. Unions have grievance policies to protect workers from unfair or unjust termination. But I can assure you the unions themselves police this rigorously and if a false grievance is filed by a worker they are kicked to the curb immediately and black balled from the union.

What most of the "free market" wackos on this board seem to overlook is the fact that unions in this day and age are very aware of these BS stories and the morons who continue to perpetuate them. They understand they have a product to sell to companies and unions are working hard to make sure that product is value added to the companies. It makes good business sense.

For example the union I belong to has developed software that is free for union contractors to use for design, fabrication and project management and they train the workers to use the software and test them on proficiency to assure they are top notch. This software cost the union millions to develop, maintain and support but they do it because its good for the contractors and in turn good for their workers. Its a win - win, and this is just one example of many that characterize the true story of modern day unions working with companies.

Ask it again, Does this help offset the trade deficet?

The council woman asked Steve to provide free wifi in order to build Apple's new building? unbelievable.

My bet is the union developed and distributed the software not as a gesture of good will, but as a way to lock in companies to use the software and therefore lock in union employees, as they are the only ones who have access to it. Not that there's anything wrong with locking someone into a system, Apple, Microsoft, IBM, etc... do it all the time. But in these cases people have a choice to buy into it or not.

Some one should get over to the Harbor Freight thread. There's some Un-American activity being promoted there and it ain't right.

My answer is yes. If we have the best lawyers, accountants, and other knowledge based fields the world will buy from us just the same as a car or toaster, it counts against the trade deficit. For example if a Chinese firm pays for services of a US company the value counts against imported toasters. Additionally central to the issue is it takes more knowledge professionals (information age employees) to design and build a car today than ever, while to takes far fewer humans to be parts assemblers or installers. MM

Not true, it is an alternative to the $10-15,000.00 (per user) software companies must buy to compete. At my business we have purchased and use four different types of this software because we work with multiple clients. Its very expensive when you consider many of my clients have 50-100 employees using this software daily and you have to remember to add in the annual support fees (per user) after the initial investment, that is a lot of money.

Right now less than half the union companies I work with use the union software but it is gaining momentum because its actually as good as or better than the competition. Its an option the union has offered, it is not mandatory for union companies to use. But yes, you must be a union company to use it.

I'm sure few if any of us have an issue with that if it is as benevolent as you make it seem. If unions build a better mousetrap then they will succeed over the competition. I must add I would be suspcious of it if I owned the business since as an owner you now have a combined labor pool and software provider greatly reducing flexibility shoud you have issues with either. This will eventully lead to union controlled software being required to bid on government jobs if it is not already being done. MM

I have a solution for this messy labor issue: We should fly jumbo jets to third world countries, load them up with out of work locals, fly them back here, house them in tents with porta potties, provide them with just enough information, let them do all of our labor, pay them peanuts (the going wage of there homeland), and fly them back when we are finished with them. That seems about as efficient as it could get. We could triple shift all of our projects and probably get everything done way under budget and way ahead of schedule.

This is genius, I should forward this to Newt.

I think that idea was thought of: way before the civil war started.........
