After I bought my boat I had to decide as to either have it hauled from Chesapeake Bay to Barnegat Bay or to sail it. It's only about a 6 hour trip but I was unfamiliar with the boat's repair & maintenance history other than what the PO stated. I decided to have it hauled. Looking back If I had sailed it, my first breakdown would have been along the C&D canal with a broken raw water pump impeller. The next breakdown would have been somewhere in the Delaware Bay with a dead fuel pump. Now that those and other items have been repaired I would not hesitate for a second to make the trip.

Anyone thinking about taking thier boat on the Erie Canal system needs to check when they think the locks will be fixed. I have seen devasting pictures of what happened to 2 of the locks ( I beleive 10 and 11) after Irene this fall. In one case, the river simply went around the lock and scoured a new path. In both cases the dam gates were completely mangled.

We brought our boat up from Florida on a truck becasue we were told theat the system might not be operational until late June or July.

From Stratford CT to Buffalo NY we put 585 Miles on the trip log and burned 660 gallons of gas.
At todays prices, it would cost about $1K more for the fuel than three years ago.
It's just about 500 miles from Liberty Landing Marina to Gateway park, Tonawanda NY, which is the western terminus of the Erie canal.
I think it is somewhere around 160 miles in The Hudson from the federal lock in Troy NY to NYC
I'd do the trip again in a heart beat. But I have friends that don't care much for locks.
 
Topgun, The NYS Canal System is open until Dec.3rd. If you hurry you can still do it this year. :grin:

The Erie and Oswego Canal navigation route between Lake Ontario and the Hudson River will re-open at 7 AM on Sunday, November 20th and remain open until 5 PM on Saturday, December 3rd. The Champlain Canal, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and the western Erie Canal between Three Rivers and Tonawanda have closed for the season. Congrats on the purchase of beautiful boat.

It sounds like you have all winter to do all your prep work and plan your trip. I would bring her by water without thinking twice. No matter how you twist it and turn it, trucking will be a task with some level of frustration. I rather be frustrated with rainy weather or no wake zones during the boat trip, than dealing with all the hassle involved with trucking. I would spend extra $ to have pros do items you can't and for extra feul to have a trip that you'll remember for the rest of your life. Do your homework and all necessary preventive maintenance. Take her for a decent shakedown cruise and she'll be ready for the trip to her new home.

P.S. Greg (LadyTAZ) did the trip to Lake Erie and back, he can give you some good tips.

I had been watching your boat on Yachtworld as I was hot for a 44 for some time. She was docked right in our boating back yard. Strangely it was when I got serious about upsizing, that I then decided to go the way of a Sedan/Convertible. Coincidentally, I saw your boat in the storage building a month or so ago when I was there visiting a friend who also stores there.

She is a beauty, and optioned out!!!!

The canals are re-opened, take that beast home by water.

If you need any local knowledge of her winter home area (or need a crewman for such a great trip), just ask :grin:. That's on my bucket list.

PS, The broker who I purchased my Egg Harbor from has delivered many Eggs from NJ to the Great Lakes as he is also the Great Lakes dealer. I could try to connect you with him for further knowledge of the trip. From what I recall, he told me that the quickest that he did the trip was 4.5 days running from dawn to dark in the mid summer (ie real real long days).

After reading your thread I decided to add my experience to the disscussion. I owned the 06 version of your boat. When I sold it, the new owner had it shipped to Ohio from Illinois. The hard top had to be stripped of all hardware but could be left on for transport. In order to get the boat low enough to leave the top, on the props and rudders had to be removed. This is how the factory shipped the boat.
As you can see there is some level of work needed to ship that boat. The shipper used in my case was Huricane Marine Haulers from the Toledo area. He was very carefull with the boat and I have since used him for one of my own boats.http://www.hurricanemtinc.com/

Thanks for the info, i know about the props and all the hard top add on's but the rudders? That's how there shipped? i didn't know that. The rudders i didn't think extended below the keel. Also I heard about hurican haulers they been refered before. i going to look them up.

I had my boat hauled up from Key Largo a year ago Oct. Cost was $3500. Can't remember the guys name but he really went above and beyond with help. As for hauling versus by water. The difference for me was days and about $5000K in gas.
 
That sounds like a good price. I'm just wanted a little time before such a long cruise to wring her out. My haul would be about 500 miles which seems less than what you did. if you find the guy you used I'd apprciate it. Best i figure cost of transport and cost of fuel would be about the same.
 
Congrats on the new boat, it looks great in the pictures. If you have the time, I would drive it to NJ but you might consider hiring a captain to go with you for part of the trip until you get familiar enough with driving a much bigger boat than your 320. Otherwise, spend some time driving the boat around where you bought it until you feel comfortable enough to take it through the canals.

I paid $2,500 in January to have my 410DA trucked up from Newport Beach to Stockton CA which is about 500 miles. I followed and acted as the chase car so I received a discounted price and was able to keep an eye on the entire process. It was a good trip. (She is much cleaner these days...)

Congratulations

Very nice upgrade! I saw your boat today in storage a couple boats in front of me. It's a nice dry 55° inside and perfect for buffing. The building is getting ready to close for the holidays but will be open 7 days a week starting in Feb. They have a concession stand open on weekends and have a nice "Open House" party in March I think. Do you plan on coming over for any work parties?
