I figure there are enough threads about boats, and there are plenty of models of boats with these engines and their variants, so, how about an official thread for the engines?

Try this link. It is free to register and you can save your engine serial number etc so all searches for part numbers etc are made easy. Genset parts too. Good luck.

Eventually you will need Walker Air Sep service kits too (600-750 hours). Here is the part number, etc.

Great idea addressing the engine side? I too have the 500s and they are great. I just visited with the Cummins folks and discussed the belts? I will call my contact but I have a question of you. How many hours do you have on your belts and are you just buying to have on hand? I show very little wear at 500 hours.

Very little wear 400 hours. These are the biggest reason for being stranded in our area. Let me know what you hear!

Good info. I'm regisrered at that site. I input my serial numbers. All I found was a link which had me measure them, count the ribs, and then it had a choice of belts based on driving conditions - on the highway.

Here is a thread discussing the belts:

http://clubsearay.com/showthread.ph...ns-QSC-Overheating?highlight=heads+up+Cummins

The long and the short of it is that Cummins QSC's use a serpentine belt with a spring loaded idler providing tension to keep the belt tight so it stays on the pulleys and idlers. Hot weather and a hot engine room causes the belts to stretch and when they do, the idler sort of dances on the belt instead of holding a constant pressure. When this happens, the belt will frequently jump off the idler or a pulley and fall into the bilge under the engine. The effect is that the circulating pump stops turning and the engine immediately overheats. I don't think there is a set number of hours and much as total time and days in extremely hot conditions. We've seen it happen on '07's '08's and 09's with as few as 200 hours on them.

The last thing any of us need to have happen is to have to dig a broken or stretched belt out from under an over heated engine in a 150 degree engine room and try to put it back on the engine while we are disabled in a busy water-way or in 6-8 ft seas 100 miles off-shore. You are far better off to carry a spare and to change the belts on a maintenance preemptive strike before they are thrown off or break.

Thank you, Frank, now, where do I order replacements?

John,

I don't think those are special belts and are probably used on other C-series Cummins engines. If you can come up with a part number, I have a good friend who is a Cummins mid-range dealer outside of Nashville. They don't know anything about a boat, but are diesel pros for off-road, construction and over the road equipment. I'm sure they can help and I'd bet their pricing for filters and parts is more geared toward Bubba's truck than what you'd expect at a marina somewhere. You would need part numbers since they have no way to look up marine product applications. So you are one step closer...... Have you asked John at TIM about a part number. He probably has the belts in stock since every 48DA and 44DB over there has gone thru more than one set of belts.

I haven't asked John. I hate to ask him for a part number and then go somewhere else for the part.

I hope this isn't to elementary of a question but, have you looked at the belt (the one on the boat) to see if there are part numbers on it?

I have seen them when I measured them, but I don't remember a number. They ride on both sides as the wind around the engine, so, I'm sure that any numbers are worn off, but, who knows? Maybe I'll go have another look. I'll probably just ask John the numbers like Frank suggested.

I really shouldn't compare the truck version, to the marine version, but the numbers on my truck belts stayed on it. Maybe it's a last case senerio. I hope you find them.

John, on another note.......how about one of thoes fine stories you tell with all the pilot jargon. Yea, I'm the one who loves to read that stuff! haha

I'll have to smack myself, I'm talking about a QSB engine and your dealing with a QSC, completly different anmial. Doaahhh! Sorry.

Frank W, at least I went back and checked myself. haha

I kept thinking that is not enough motor to push that boat!

Hello again John, I don't know what has possesed me in looking for your belt but here is what I've found.

You need your engine serial numbers to get the proper belt. As I understand it, cummins doesn't build these engines the same way everytime. So after talking to the Cummins parts guy, he needs a serial number to figure out which belt will be the correct fit.

If this is all hog wash, I'm just repeating what the parts guy told me. Heck it's probably what you figured out too! haha

Here is a thought.........this is going to be an every other year thing, so just go buy the right belts from the parts dept at the marina and then you will have spares + the right part number. After that you can order the belts from a non-marine Cummins dealer like the guys I mentioned.

My experience with John is that he is fair and won't rape you on pricing.......BTW, he does not report to the service manager.

Wait a minute........Frank, are you sayng that we need to change the belts every other year? Or does this apply only to QSC500s due to the belt desing issue?

BTW, your idea is a good one. If it's so hard to find the right part I would do as you said.

Frank I think you are reading this wrong. At least I hope you have.
I'm not trying to buy belts, I was trying to help "John" find belts. I don't know John, just that I was trying to be helpful. I guess I should have kept myself out of the diesel thread. I appologize. No scarcasm I promise.
Maybe I'm reading your post wrong.

I went back and read. When I write "John" I meant "Hampton". Not John from your parts source.

Sorry if I was confusing, and no Hampton didn't ask me to do anything. I was sticking my nose in where it didn't belong. I thought I had an answer and then realized I was talking about a different motor.

I appologize again. I didn't mean to cause a problem. Mike

I'm messing up a perfectly good thread, MODS please delete my postings to this thread please.

No. Frank meant for me to buy them from the other John. Probably will. Serial number on thread 1.
