Official 400EC thread

Hey fellow 400 EC'ers... I just bought a 1995 400 EC that is upgraded in every detail, and seems to be 100%. I'm excited to jump into the fray - my previous boat was a 1987 Four Winns 267 Quest - big jump here, but my wife and I are OCD'ing on the new one! Thanks for starting this thread - it may well be very helpful to newbie owners at some point!
Welcome to the site. Post some photos . . . we all love photos.

I just purchased a new replacement fridge/freezer for my 1991 EC 400 from West Marine and the front door panel which was an option is black. Does anyone know where to get this panel in white?
My original fridge/freezer is white and I think it looks nicer than the black one.
Any help would be appreciated.

My 400 EC which was a prototype had the storage box on the swim platform when I bought the boat new in 1991. It does not hold the fenders as the opening is too small. Anything you store in the box will get wet and if not dried out will mold.

Does anyone know of a company in Michigan that will completely update the inside of a boat? I'd like to upgrade in 2011 when I retire.

I love my 400EC and have never tired of it.

Thanks, Doug M

Could you just go to a cabinet/counter top supplier and ask them to cut you a piece of white laminate to fit?

Doug

Anyone know what props the 1995 400EC gas 454s had from new?

20x20 three blade??

I think thats what I have?

Thanks,

Mark.

We had a 1998 40EC we bought new and sold it in 2008 and we loved that boat and it had every option plus.

We also have 2 40EC's on our dock and 5 total in the marina.

This may help others,

Minor battery problem solved..!
My starboard side volt meter was never as high as the port while running.
The port was 14v running and the starboard was 12.5ish.
The starboard batterys were brand new.
(I tested the alternators and battery's but, never touched the genny battery because, it worked fine.)
I just went with it for a few years..

Yesterday, the genny battery finally died.
After replacement the starboard side is showing 14volts with the engine running.
Same on both port and starboard.
:)
Turns out the genny battery is charged from the starboard side charging system.
Same as the house battery's.

Cheers,

Wow! I was just saying something to my wife the other day that I thought one of the (brand new) house batteries was flaky because I had the same sympton. I never bothered with the genny battery either because it seems to work fine! I'll remove the positive lead tomorrow and see if that makes a difference... Thanks for taking the time to post that up here because I'm sure we're not the only ones experiencing this!

In response to the post to remove the TV and replace with a door. Perhaps this is a better solution? it was a pretty easy install with NO cutting of the original opening.

AON - I am having the same problem with my Starboard side. Never thought about the gen battery. Checked everything else and even went so far as to change the battery cables. New battery come Monday. Thanks.

Al - What is that where the TV used to be? Another note - how is that boat running?

I'm not sure I follow??? Where the TV was is now a 19" flat panel Vizio and a DVD player under it.
The boat is running great! How is your new boat?

I couldn't tell from the pic what you did in that area. Now I know. Boat is running well and everyday I learn something new about it. I figure it will take me about two years to get it close to where I want it. I am still getting used to the enormity of the boat. Going form a 27ft to a 40 ft is still a little daunting. But each trip gets a little more comfortable. Docking and rafting up are so much easier.
Hope we see you out on the Bay this summer.
Joe

I installed a 19" TV on a swing arm with a slim-line DVD in same opening. We used the old VCR opening as a magazine/remote rack. Excuse old crappy cell phone pic.

Thanks for the info. Are they blinds in the windows? If so, where did you get them and how much modification did you have to do?

Yes, they are blinds. They were in the boat when I bought it. I didn't realize they weren't a standard feature. They were definitely custom fitted in the opening. Worked very well.

New topic sort of:
I need to replace all my batteries, I think. They are 4 years old. No real starting problems. But when we are out on the hook is where we have issues. With the fridge on and I turn on the radio the radio will start cutting in and out. Not signal. Power. Turns almost off and then on. If the anchor is out - I can't get it back up without it tripping the circuit switch and shutting down. Even after resetting the switch it won't come up unless I run the engines/gen for a while to recharge the batteries.

So here is some info: Currently have GP24 batteries 03/2008. Three on the starboard side and two on the port. Starboard read NAPA starting in/out boards. Not sure what the two on the port read. Looks like I could put in larger batteries as the current ones don't come close to filling up the trays.

Here is the questions: What is the proper size battery for the 400EC? Call MM last week still no feedback. Is the Starboard side starting or house? I think it's house but still haven't figured that out. Will this week. I believe the third battery on the starboard side is for the genny. Right? If the port is house should I or can I increase the number of batteries on that side from two to three?

Looking forward to your opinions! Thanks!

I believe my set-up is original.
A total of four group 27 battery's.
I have three group 27 batteries on the starboard side of the engine room.
The most forward battery, is the port motor starting battery.
The other two (middle and aft on the starboard side) are the house and starboard starting.
The only battery on the port side of engine room is for the generator.
