I to agree it is a great price but PROCEED WITH CAUTION. The asking price anyway is way cheaper than comparable boats probably are. It stands to reason there is some reason for that but I have been suprised before. Definitely worth checking out. Good Luck and Good Find!

Wow, there sure are some paranoid people here!! I guess it could get sold, but how else was he going to get an opinion if you couldn't see it?

Cons:
1) No Genny
2) No Radar/GPS
3) States ONLY 110v ac fridge ( could be misprint, s/b ac/dc)

Pros:
1) PRICE-PRICE-PRICE
2)Camper top. This is a must!!! It gives you extra living space under cover. Around here it costs 2k + to have one made!!
3) Cockpit carpet
4) Hours & Condition look stellar!!

If you are serious I would inquire today, but, with caution as there are MANY scammers out there. If it is legit, get your surveys and have at her!!
The money you save on this baby could easily add the things that you find lacking!

I completely agree with your assessment. Personally, I am not paranoid but when I see something with an asking price of roughly half that of similiar boats, caution flags go up but not brakes. Just me. :smt001

It took me almost 3 years to find my first boat. It was a junker and had all kinds of problems with it and spent lots o' money playing with it.
Slow down and spend time,not money,and shop around! You will find to deal you want.
 
Thanks for the info Quint4.....I'll get it weighed. My trailer is licensed for 12,000lbs gross weight. I guess the Excursion is a Beast because it tows it great! 6 hrs from OH was easy. My trailer has electric brakes designed for underwater use and work great with my controller. I was not sure I would like them. Nice having brakes backing down a ramp! I do have to turn the power way down when towing empty or they will lock up! So how much does the 280 weight with 2 V8's and trailer? Mike.

If it turns out that is this a scam or they left out a minor detail like the boat had a small fire and only the keel remains, can you please post your findings?

That price is so low I now feel sick to my stomach. I was totally confident that my boat, 2 years older than the one in the ad, is worth much more than the asking price.

Now I think I may go jump off my roof. With my damn luck I’ll just break a leg then I’ll be poor and have a broken leg.

Umm, if it turns out to be a real deal could you lie to me?

No worries Presentation, you cracked me up, though. The listing only had an e-mail, no phone, and the seller never replied to my inquiry. So, either it is not legit, already sold which wouldn't surprise me if it was legit, or they didn't like all of the questions in my e-mail and there was something fishy there that they didn't want to talk about. I can tell you, after days of scouring, that I can't find a boat nearly as beautiful as yours under the top end of our search range at $55K. So, please, take the ladder down from the roof, not the direct route!
 
So, I got all the specs sheets available on the Sea Ray site, but they only go back to 2001. Can anybody say if 2000 were carbureted or fuel injected? Looking in the 270/290 range. It's hard to find reliable information on the net...

That was during the changeover. I'm pretty sure there were both available back then. I know my 2000 240 dancer had a carb, but a fuel injected version was available
 
This is far more difficult than I thought it would be! The tradeoffs between the money, the model years, the power, the size and the amenities are so hard to balance. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks again for all of the input. We're intensely looking for the "just right" 270 or 280. I'll keep you posted!
 
Still looking! We almost strayed, started looking at Regal and Monterey where you can get more boat for the money. But then, on advice from this great site, talked to the mechanic where we plan to keep her and they aren't really equipped to work on Volvos. So, back to Mercs, and we really want a Sea Ray anyway. That took us to possibly a 280 with a single as twins are putting us out of our price range which we've lowered to $40-45K. I know we already talked about this, but a 454 on a 280 just doesn't seem like enough power.

So, we'll keep scouring the listings and will find the perfect ride eventually! Coming off the second snowiest February ever here in the D, I'm not even convinced summer is really ever going to come anyway...
 
A Bravo III with a 496mag HO would be plenty of power for a 280. Our 270 has a 454 and is 29+ feet and works fine with a 9ft beam. I will put a BIII lower unit on it someday when needed but the BI works fine for now, Mike.

2004 with 4.3L BI, blue hull that we LOVE, with trailer, no windlass, no genny, 215 hours

OR...

2005 5.0L BIII, no blue hull, but with windlass, still no genny, 300 hours, about $3K less but no trailer...

We're still up in the air about trailering so we're not sure if we want to commit to a trailer out of the gates then figure out we just want to lay it up somewhere. Input on that is appreciated too!

I would recommend you pass on both of them and get one that has a Windlass and Generator. A trailer in the package would be nice but you can easily buy one after the fact if you find the boat equipped how you want for the price you like.

By the way-, what was the story on that 04 or 05 280DA that was practically being given away that you had posted the ad for in this thread back last month?

Interesting advice, but haven't had luck with that approach so far! We'll keep trying to be patient...

There was no response from the "seller" on that boat, and the ad disappeared, so it either was not legit or I was too slow!!

I will partially back off my previous statement about the Generator. While I still think it is a good idea to have a Genny on a boat of this size, if for nothing else, resale value, I did not notice before your location is Michigan. You could probably get by without a Genny up there because it probably does not get terriably hot in the summer and in the winter you can't use it all all because it is too cold.

I would definitely make sure you get one with a Windlass though. A Windlass is a pretty common option on these year 280DA you are looking at. You sould not have a problem finding plenty with a Windlass. They are pretty expensive to add after the fact.
 
Jason, I agree on the windlas! I could not imagine not having one!! Where I live, a gen and a/c is extremely important so as to keep the Admiral happy and enjoying the boat! Now that I have had and used the boat on overnighters, how do people without gensets get hot water to take showers and clean up:huh:. I have to have a fairly warm shower in the mornings and after swimming in the salt water:grin: furthermore, if I was purchasing a 280 again, I would look real hard for the V8's and settle for the 4.3's if the price and condition of the boat was just too good to pass up....IMHO
