General performance questions of 90-92 270/290

Back to one of the original questions.....towing. I would recommend a 3/4 ton. Our Excursion worked great, Mike.

Thanks for the opinions, did not leave, just lurked. I'm now a member, 92, 270.Thanks for the info...now I have a bay***** for sale...lol!

That's great that you are back, we can now cancel the posse that was looking for you. We thought that you were going after the 290, but, the 270 is good. Did you pick up a Sundancer or a Weekender?

I have some friends with a 2252. They're kind of a funny lookin' boat but... that's what they can afford and I've been out in it... and I like it :smt001. It didn't cost them much and they're out all the time.
Nice upgrade for you though! Congrats!

I agree, the style was never changed, at some point they gave it a self bailing fiberglass deck which was a big improvement. Mine has the 5.0 and a big eared SS 16p prop which gave it enough power for Lake Erie, but no speed demon with that prop. I never had to cancel a weekend at Put in bay because of weather, it handeled it pretty well but you had to know what you were doing also. I agree....big improvement!

If you are still wondering about performance,I had the same boat, but operate it at 5000'. The 7.4 had lots of power, but i would often ventilate the prop when i tried to get on plane. It struggled to plane with my family aboard unless i had less than 1/2 a tank of fuel. After owning the boat for 8 years I bit the bullet and replaced the leg with a used bravo three. It made it a new animal, and I loved the instant takeoff, no matter the load. I would recommend the up grade.

I am also looking at a 92 290. The ad says it has a new 7.4 with 80 hrs on it which was what attracted me to it. However, the ad goes on to say that it has an Alpha drive. I thought all the 7.4's came with Bravo II's and my real concern is wouldn't the horsepower of a 7.4 eat an Alpha to pieces?

Yes. Could be they made an error in the listing?
The boat is blue/wht, but, the dash is green? What is wrong with this picture?

Wow, good eye. Thank you. I never even noticed the dash. Yes, something not right here.

I can't figure out what the deal is. Lighting? Painted? IDK?
I would have to see a better picture. The rest of the boat looks pretty good from the pix.

I think it's the lighting. The dash is black like it is supposed to be. Hopefully it does not have an alpha on it.....deal breaker if it does.

If it has an Alpha, I am going assuming that this was a change from the way it came out of the factory. Maybe when he put in the new engine. Jeeez, why would someone do something so stupid? :smt021

I just looked at the archives. The listing has a couple of things wrong - Beam is 8'6", not 9'. Water is 24 gal, not 20. Holding tank figure is probably wrong. Weight is 5600#, not 5800. Standard power was 5.7L w/Bravo II, optional power was 7.4L w/Bravo II.

Well, check it out. Whoever did the listing made several mistakes.
Also, I hope that you realize that the boat that you are asking about is not the same boat as what is listed in the heading. ( ie: 90-92 270/290). The 1990 & 1991 270 is the same as the 1992 290. A 1992 270 is a smaller boat.

I figured it was a 290 because it has a 9 ft beam. A 92 270 has an 8'6" beam, correct?
Also, the 290 has the fixed rear facing bench behind the drivers seat, as this boat has, where the 270 has the two flip down seats

Aw, yes, my screw-up. For some reason, I had '92 270 in my mind. Where did I get that 270 stuff from? :smt101
So, it looks your big question is what outdrive does the boat have installed.
And, I guess the dash looks odd because of the lighting or something.
