The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Hi guys....I would like to get this thread going again. Although it is cool to hear about all the other sea rays, all I really want to do is discuss ways I can continue to learn and improve my 1988 34 EC.

Headliner question......is it unheard of to rip the old headliner down, sand it smooth, and paint it a bright white? Penny for your thoughts....
Thanks,
Greg

Hey Guys...
My 1988 34 EC has the pull out jumper seat on the port side (passenger) and the single helm seat on the starboard (captain)

I want to get rid of my single and replace it with a jumper style seat.

Is there anyone out there that is willing to trade? The seat is in good condition with a small rip towards the front of it. I could send some pics next time I am at the boat.

Thanks,
-Greg

Glad to see this thread going again, thanks Miss Maddy G.
You may not like what you find under the headliner,it's unfinished fiberglass. I would look into a new vinyl headliner. I have seen white wood paneling, mush like the strips used for Pergo wood flooring applied as headliner. Sorry I have no info on where to get it.
As for the back to back seat,I use a folding SS and vinyl deck chair, very nice. Fits just right behind the helm seat.

Giff,
Thanks for getting back to me. I hear ya about the fiberglass. I scraped and sanded today and applied a fiberglass primer. I don't know if I like it yet??? I can always cover it up with your suggestion or a regular vinyl headliner.

While this thread has the attention of 84 to 89 340 owners, has anyone had to pull the overhead cabinets down in the galley? I need to pull them down, I unscrewed the l brackets and it will not budge. It also looks like the entire l shaped cabinet needs to come down.

Count me in as well. I have an '88 340 EC and have learned a tremendous amount about the boat from this forum, it far and away the best. I did replace my stairs with wood this fall and will look for the photos. Next will be the area in front of the galley and finally the whole carpet. I cannot stand the mauve color!

We're all recovering from the cheesy Miami Vice colors that so time-stamp our boats. Now, if there was a simple way to get rid of all the damn formica!

Keith,
This will give you an idea of how wood will look in the companionway. Stairtred is hinged for more storage. I'll apologize now in case this photo srews things up.

Great looking interior. Got more pics? We love seeing what everyone else has done.

Yeah the wood looks great. I am eager to see how great the entire floor is going to look when you get that wood down. The wood floor with the wood steps is something that I am very interested in doing.

My project right now is the headliner. I have the the whole galley section off, scraped and sanded.

Do you guys suggest just getting a vinyl headliner from defender?

Yes. A vinyl headliner would be the answer. If you have enough space, try adding recessed LED lights in the headliner like the new boats have. You could catch a 12 volt feed off the top lights of the galley cabinets. An on/off switch could be installed on the cabinet or near the door. Good luck and send pics.

Well played Giff.....great idea.

If anyone knows anyone looking for a 88 340 I have one that needs to move. Fresh water boat nice PM me for details or view at yachtsouth.com . This is a friends boat. 29k but make all offers!!!

I'm changing out my windlass. Giving up on the Good vertical rope/chain model I installed four years ago. The rode hocks and bines in the windlass.
I plan to purchase a Maxwell horizontal above deck model. Maxwell claims it new design to be jam free. I'm getting an above deck model because of the shallow rope locker,a better fall for the rode. Maxwell has two models, a 600 Lb. pull with 1/2" line and a 800 Lb. pull with 5/8" line. Maxwell says light displacement boats up to 35' can use the 600 Lb. , heavy displacement boats need the 800 Lb.

So what should I go for? Can I get away with the 600 Lb.
And what windlass and pulling Lbs. do other 340s have.

If the money isn't tremendously different, I would be more comfortable with the 800. With the 600 only going up to 35 I would rather go heavier due to the fact that the LOA is over 34 for our boats. That's what I would do for what it is worth.

Did you try contacting Good to see if they have any suggestions as to how you may remedy the problem. Seems like an awful waste to get rid of a 4 yr old windlass that must have cost a pretty penny.

Ron
I've talked to Good at the boat shows, they were helpful and I've done all they told me to do, but.
The vertical Good windlass needs a deep rope locker to let the rode fall from the windlass chain wheel properly. On a vertical the rode curls 3/4 around the wheel then down and the weight of the rode falling keeps it working on the chain wheel. This information I obtained from other windlass manufactures that make both vertical and horizontal. The original 1980's Good all rope above deck horizontal windlass worked well with the shallow rope lockers. Unfortunately Good does not make a rope/chain horizontal.
The windlass has failed me many times in the last four years.
My boating buddy's told me if I'm anchoring next to them this summer; I need a reliable windlass.
Keeping boating buddy's is worth more than the cost of a windlass.

Ok, that makes sense. Didn't realize the concept of the shallow rope locker. I'm sure you could sell the Good windlass if you wanted to. And heaven knows, there's nothing worse than a fouled windlass in a crowded anchorage!
