Zyrex bottom coatings

I just wanted to share with CSR about my new bottom paint I applied to my boat this last fall. I put Zyrex bottom paint on which is an epoxy paint. It has an extremely low surface area (slick as sh#@) so nothing can adhere to it. If slim grows you just go over 10mph to clean the bottom. Zyrex advertised that it would increase your gas mileage and speed. Here are the results so far:
1.The boat literally jumps out of the hole like I have never seen.
2. Top speed increased from 31-37mph
3. Idle speed is faster, I had to retrain myself for maneuvering in marina.
4. Cruising speed at 3600rpm used to be under 20-21mph, is now 25-26mph.
Before we splashed the boat, they were moving my trailer/boat in the boat yard and my boat slid on the trailer :wow:. We made sure to strap down really well before splashing. I am still researching so will keep you up-to-date as it sits in the water. So far, no sign of growth (1 month wet). I have been really excited at the performance increase. Here is a picture of the bottom paint.

Very intresting, I have a few questions maybe you can answer.
1. Where can it be purchased from
2. How much is it a gallon
3. Im wondering if i put that on my boat would i need to strip the existing bottom paint to the hull before the new stuff was applied

1. I purchased it through our local boat yard. Here is the Zyrex website.

2. The two gallons that you mix together (two part epoxy) was about $400.00.
3. It was real important to prep the bottom really well. We stripped all paint off (to my bottom gelcoat) before we painted. That might have been overboard, but it sealed on really well. I do not think it is necessary to remove all the paint, just really good sanding. Call and ask Steve at Zyrex, he was really helpful. You have to remove the tape before the epoxy dries, or you will NOT get the tape off. It is amazing how strong it is.

No barrier coat needed. That was hard for me to accept after doing many bottom jobs with barrier coats.

You misunderstand, I think. The product, by it's own definition is a barrier coat. However, unlike conventional barrier coats, this one appears to be slick enough to shed bottom growth. If it really does what it says, then it would be a huge benefit for all.

Gotcha. I had to change my way of thinking. I have always used barrier coats in the past with good ablative or hard coated paints. So far I have been impressed.
 
If this isn't too good to be true this is going on the bottom of my boat in the spring. I wonder if you need to remove the existing paint if you have a hard epoxy paint on your hull like Interlux fiberglass bottomkote?
 
Any idea if this stuff is suitable for a boat that will be moored in salt water?

If so I might seriously consider it for my new sundeck. It hasn't even seen water yet, and it's bottom has yet to be painted...

I believe they use it on salt water boats too. I would check with Zyrex.
 
Yep - Just emailed them via their website...

I came across a discussion where people were saying it is indeed good in salt water - but can't seem to find it now, just 5 minutes later - duh

(Need to invent a term for when you google something, get a great article, but then cant seem to find it again.)
 
Looks like I will be making a phone call to them and im also hoping it comes in other colors. The black is nice but we like the light blue bottom look because we dont have that pretty deep blue sea/salt water here in the great lakes,lol.

Did you apply the paint yourself or did the boat yard do it? Do they sell to the public or only vendors that have been trained (if you know). I have a message into them since I am having my bottom painted next week. I am interested in using this product.

The boat yard did the work for me and also purchased the paint/supplies. Call steve at the Zyrex number, he is really helpful. He can get you the paint and is really helpful consulting. I also had the yard wash well with acetone after the sanding. It really helped.

Mine will need to be done in the next 6 moths, I looked on the net for this products availability in Australia but came up with nothing. I really hope this becomes available here in Australia as I would use it in a flash.
 
Just got a response to my email inquiring about usage on a boat moored in salt water 5 months per season. Will give my Sea Ray dealer or boat yard a call next to see if they concurr and can apply it:

[FONT=&quot]Zy[/FONT]rex works for fiber glass, aluminum, & steel in fresh & salt water.
It is so slick that it is self cleaning when you take the boat out on the water.

A new boat would be the best, it has not had a chance to take on any water in the gel coat.

Zyrex is the best alternative to any other kind of bottom pain. Others are not enviornmentaly friendly and they need to be reapplied every year.

I attached a copy of our brochure and the going green ad that had been in Trade Only.

After reading their website,it seems Zyrex can only be applied at their application centers near Texas. If they now have made it DIY easy and are selling it to the retail public. I'm in.
$400 for two gal. will be very economical compared to the costs of covering a bottom with bearer coating and ablative paint, if coverage is the same. I've planned to sand blast the bottom and re prep this year or next.

How long does it last? Will it have the same dersired results when applying over existing bottom paint?

You should be able to buy paint from zyrex or they can point you in the right direction (sales person in your area). My boat has a 30foot hull and it took not quite 4 total gallons. I had 5 coats applied which is the recommendation. The name of technician that did my boat is Andrew Allen at Proptek. His email is Proptek@sbcglobal.net. His phone number is 254-780-3510. He said that he will be glad to answer any questions about the application process.
