The Long Island Loop – Points of Interest

Alex - Great pix and experience. where did you stay in shelter island, west neck by shell beach?

Thanks Rocket!

We stayed in Coecles Harbor, on the west side just past the entrance to the harbor.

I thought i may have seen you rafted if you were in West Neck, similar boats. Glad you enjoyed the Peconic/Shelter/Greenport and moutauk. We just moved the boat out there from great south bay, south shore, for the same issues you had, skinny water. I know the spots very well you are talking about, was a great read.

Love the write up. Enjoyed the conversations. Looking forward to the next one.

Hey Rocket, next time just pull up along the side and join us. We're friendly bunch .

Alex, excellent write up and pics where beautiful looks like you and your family had an experience to last a life time it was my pleasure to entertain Lol or be the entertainment,,,, it was nice meeting your family till next year!!!:smt038

Thanks Joe. We enjoyed your company and wish we could have stayed longer for more fun. Don't be too shy for the next year's advanture.

I think Greg is now hooked on spending nights on the anchor after all the fun we had at Shelter Island. So, if anyone is not very comfortable doing overnights on the hook, staying with our raft will fix it....LOL.

Alex

Great pictures and great narrative. Since much of our trip was similar to yours just different timing, your pictures brought back all the visuals I'm too lazy to capture with a camera. I had a great time meeting all of you and indeed found Joe very entertaining. Looking forward to the next time.

Alex,

Thanks so much for taking the time to do such a great write up. You already brought back some fairly fresh memories of some great times and some great new friends. We really appreciated meeting everyone and spending the time we did together - its exactly the reason we love boating so much. I too am very glad our paths crossed and we were able to talk a few others into joining us. I look forward to see you all again next year and hopefully meeting some new folks as well. Thanks again Alex for all your work, attention to detail and follow through. I hope everyone will start thinking and throw some ideas out for a trip next year - maybe something we can plan over the winter - Block??

We're in......LOL.

I hear Rod (Nansea) and Rudy (My Summer) will not miss such trip in 2011.

My wife actually suggested that we anchor overnight at Croton this past weekend. But we wound up heading to Port Jeff and got a mooring.

But you are right it cured us.

We were in Port Jeff this past weekend, anchored over on the right side. sorry we missed you.

Mike, you see what happense when you upgrade? I bet if you were on 280 you wouldn't miss 480DB.......LOL.....just kidding. It's nice to hear that you guys are still cruising along beautifull LI shores. I wish I was there too.

Mike,

Too bad, I wish I'd have known, would have been great to see you. That was my first time there by boat. It's a great little town.

We took a few guests, so we figured it would be easier to get a mooring and use the launch, rather than have to make a few trips with the dinghy. Otherwise we would have anchored.

Anybody heading anywhere this weekend? I am looking for somewhere else to go for the weekend. The weather looks like it might be good again. There is supposed to be fireworks tomorrow night 9/15/10, and Friday Night 9/17/10 in NY Harbor, Might hit that as well.

We are finding new spots to anchor in. The 280 was easy to find spots, I would just sneak in, raise the drives and drop anchor anywhere. The 450 needs a little more room so I don't swing into a little boat and sink it.

Greg, did the Ferry boat rock you at all? I've been anchoring on the right after you go through the inlet. Then we dinghy over to the sand pit to wear out the dog on the dunes. Then we dinghy into town and pay the $10 dinghy dock fee at Danfords.

 :smt043

No, we didn't feel the Ferry at all. We stayed on a Setauket Yacht Club mooring, we were way in the southeast corner. I guess the ferry is going too slow by the time it gets that far into the harbor. We did feel the launch a few times though, early in the morning, not too bad.

So what are some other good places to visit in the sound? I've been to Manhasset Bay and Oyster Bay. I need to find a place to go this weekend. Somewhere with a little town would be nice, since it's a little cool to get in the water.

We enjoy Northport, I would grab a mooring ball here, the anchor spots are a little rocky. Nice little town.

Norwalk, If you can grab an anchor spot, lots of little islands to explore. But it's a dinghy hike into town.

Greenwich, the mooring field is tucked away in a nice little cove. Long dinghy ride into town. They used to have places to anchor but they filled all those spots with mooring balls this year.

Every year it seems we lose more and more anchor spots as towns fill them with mooring balls to raise a little more money.

Actually you're not allowed to anchor in that mooring field west of the inlet unless you're on the north side of the channel. Most "anchorage" areas are being replaced by mooring fields and are patrolled by the harbormaster. Something else that sucks if you're thinking of rafting up in that area Mike, three boats maximum allowed on a mooring. They are enforcing that too. We have a mooring there and get harassed on a regular basis.
Also, that's one long ass dinghy ride from the cove into town....

yeah we anchor north of the channel. I've seen blow boats anchoring on the east side of the mooring field, they don't seem to get booted. Maybe it's just "IN" the mooring field where they have issues? It is a long dinghy ride, but it's ok in my dink now. The one I had before... we would be soaked by the time we got into town.
