OMG! Just bought a 2008 Sea Ray 260 Sundancer on eBay!

Haul it or pilot (with assistance) from Toms River, NJ to Stamford, CT?

BTW, I really appreciate everyone's help, tips, advices, and even offers to help me pilot this baby home... it gave me a lot of comfort and security to complete this purchase!

Regarding transportation, I´m tending to just hire a professional boat hauler... what do you think? Should I accept someone's help and make this beautiful trip over the weekend or early next week, while taking the opportunity to learn more about she?

Congrats and glad everything worked out! The trip home would depend on your schedule and if you have the time make the trip. The weather this weekend will be very cooperative. You can get ALL the info you need to make this trip right here on this message board from folks who have made it many times. Beats the heck out of any cruising guide you could purchase. Plenty of guys here who can get you through the intricacies of Barnegat Bay, myself included. From there you've got Turtle to get you up to NYC, which would be a great photo op and trip for you, and then beyond, into the Sound.

If you want to look at it from a pure cost standpoint, I think Mike said 7 hours for this trip. Figure a fuel burn on avg of 9gph. For easy math expect to burn 70 gallons at $3/gallon. I think the boat hauler guy would pay about that in tolls! (I'm kidding). LHPM does not have a ramp so you're going to incur a charge to pull the boat out with the travellift and drop it on the hauler's trailer. Same cost may be incurred on your end in CT to get the boat OFF the trailer. I had a hauler take my Crownline from my old marina to my house, 35 miles away, on MY trailer, and it cost me $250 (that was back in the fall of 2002). Your trip is going to cost probably more than $500 but you certainly could call around. Then you're likely to get more of that "I'm busy" stuff.

Take the trip!

Danniel, When would you plan on taking her home to CT? If I were you I would take the trip, to get familar with the boat, and have vacation. The hardest part will be getting to the Manesquan inlet... Depending on when you go, I can lead you out... Once you are out the inlet, it is a straight shot to NYC.. I would stay the night in Liberty Landing, so you can hit Hell's Gate and the LI sound in the morning...

My buddy just bought a 40-foot Hatteras and hired a captain to go from Maryland to the LI Sound around Port Jefferson. he said it was the best thing he did and well worth the money. He also said, be careful in the Hudson, there are a lot of obstacles.

Just wanted to jump in and say congrats as well. I think you should move the boat yourself but you should expect fuel burn to be more like 12-13 gallons per hour.

Very cool, I'm excited for your purchase. An EBay deal done good! See...there are some honest people in this world after all! Congratulations!

PV,
Congrats on your new boat, especially snagging it off of eBay. What's just as impressive is how many folks here, being perfect strangers, have gone out of their way to help you out. I just wish I had been a member of this forum when I bought my first boat a year ago.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Nice deal! I purchased a motorcycle the same way and many thought I was nuts too. As you have found, if you do your homework it can be a great experience.

Enjoy the boat!

Congrats! Welcome!:thumbsup::smt038

When you get her home you will have to re-name her and here is the proper procedures:

Shes a sweet looking lady.

As for renaming, well its frowned upon to sacrifice a virgin in this day and age.

Shes a sweet looking lady.

As for renaming, well its frowned upon to sacrifice a virgin in this day and age.

If you take a virgin on board, along with other people, and a virgin never leaves alive, then haven't you met the criteria? If so, there's more than one way to keep a virgin from leaving your boat alive, and one isn't illegal or even frowned upon, depending on age, marital status...

Anyway, there's more than one way to sacrifice a virgin.

Fellow CSR friends,

I'm still laughing my a$$ off on the virgin's sacrifice, it almost sounds legal... so we'll see what can be done on that regard! ;)

Now my apologies for dissapearing for a few days. Mainly Seller and I were waiting for almost 10 days (an eternity, I fell...) for the bank to ship us the clean title of the vessel, after balance was paid off. But finally we got the document this am. So money was finally transfered and bill of sale and title executed! Hurray!

Lastly, poll results were overwhelmingly in favor (84%) of taking the boat by water to its new home, and I'd love more than anyone to deliver on my commitment as promised here. However, it will take a few days to register the boat in CT (lots of paperwork they require) and I'm taking some vacations starting Friday.... therefore, and for a greater good, I've decided to have the lady hauled safely to her new home. Uship was a great tool to request a quote, get some bids fast and check feedback on the contractor prior to closing a deal.

I wish you all the best for the remainder of the 2010 season, and safe cruisin' wherever you are.

Yours
Pontevedra

Don't be a stranger here on CSR. If you've got a problem, you'll find an answer here.

Best of luck!

Pv,
Congrats on your new purchase and welcome to CSR!! What a great story! I bought my boat in February 2009 off Craiglist. It was located in Forked River , NJ. I was going to ship it until the mechanic there warned me of when he shipped his boat up from Maryland. He ended up with some gelcoat damage due to debris kicked up from the hauling vehicle. Nothing serious, just cosmetic but frustrating none the less! I hope you have better luck. I decided to drive the boat back and the PO was awesome with help getting it ready and launching it. He even took the ride back to NY with me. I can't say enough about how that boosted my confidence in this purchase. Best of luck with her!!
