After 2 1\2 weeks of marriage I lost my wedding band while playing with my nieces in the water off of my parents dock. I was in about 5 feet of water with a muddy\ mucky bottom. I spent 3 evenings searching in vain with a mask and snorkel. I finally called in some professional salvage divers who found it in 20 minutes with an underwater metal detector.
Has this happened to you? How many rings have to lost in the water? Were you able to recover it?
Fortunately the admiral was very relaxed through the whole episode. She was very relieved to have it back on my hand.
Thanks in advance for your stories.
Darren

By Accident? no.

However, I hate wearing my ring, especially early on, and one easter I took it off and buttoned it on to a golf shirt I was wearing. I thought it was lost.

I never used that shirt again and about 5-years later my wife was putting together a donation bag of clothes--she saw something shinny has she through that shirt and there is was.

I was out a few weeks ago with my son and his family. He was playing with his 2 year old son in water about 4 - 5 feet deep for an hour or so, before he realized his wedding ring was gone. We took turns diving for it in the not so great visibilty lake water. We felt it was like looking for a needle in a haystack, and yes, we wished we had one of those underwater metal detectors. We were just about to give up when he spotted it after brushing around the sediment with his hands
The worst part was we didn't know exactly where it had fell off, so we had to check an area of approx. 25ft x 25 ft. So in the end it was a good day at the lake!

I carry my metal detector on the boat just for that reason.
I found rings & car keys & eye glasses for other people.

As a rule I should get a 20% finders fee of the value of the item,
But I'm just happy to help someone out.The free beer is always nice !!.

I lost mine on my honeymoon in Maui. I was swimming in moderate surf and did not notice it was missing until I got out of the water. Lots of snorkeling, but never found it. We replaced it immediately when we got back home, but my wife will never let me forget.

I stopped wearing one...doesn't make me any less married.

Not sure who, but someone on this board used his ring to short out his battery and almost lost his finger while doing so. I seem to remember some pretty ugly pictures of the charred remains. Almo

I was wearing my wedding ring while changing my car battery many years ago and shorted it out. It was so hot, I pulled it off my finger and threw it across the garage. There was a melted spot where the ring touched the battery and a smaller melted spot exactly 180 degrees from that where the spark came out. I'm on my third wedding ring now...fortunately have an understanding and trusting wife!

This is a great one. We are lucky to live in the Florida Keys and have friends who come down every winter from Ohio. In 2001 our friends came down and his brother and sister in-law came over from Ireland to visit. We were all out at waterfront bar called Sombrero Dockside Lounge on Boot Key harbor in Marathon. Our friends sister in-law from Ireland had her wedding ring fall off and fell between the slats in the deck that is over the water. This was about 10pm and they were flying out of Miami the next morning. There was this great guy called captain Jack who has lived on the harbor for years and offered to look for the ring in the morning. The friends from Ireland said that would be great and gave him there address in Ireland and thought they would never see the ring from there 27 years of marriage or ever here from capt Jack. The next day capt Jack did dive for the ring and did find it after one and one half hours. He called there number in Ireland and left them a message that the ring was found and being sent to them that day. When they finely got home they could not believe it was found and being returned to Ireland. They tried to compensate capt Jack but he would not have any part of that and just said he was glad he could help and nice to have met them and if they ever came back to America and the Keys they could buy him a drink. They were going to return for a visit but my friends brother passed away so it never happened. My friend told me that his brother and sister in-law have told the story a hundred times in Ireland about the ring and this wonderful American Capt Jack.

Lost my wedding ring on our Hoenymoon in Australia. Luckily it was ina pool and was found within an hour(big pool, lots of clorine). After that my ring never went to any body of water my wife was so mad. Now I dont wear it unless we go out on a date night.

Never lost my ring but I have lost glasses, tools, water nozzles, etc. In fact the lake level is up about 2" from all the stuff I have in the lake!

Went to catch a football in lake Cumberland in about 100 feet of water. That bling I caught instead was my ring flying through the air. Water was a bit cold so I had some shrinkage.

This is a true story:

Way back in 1981 in my early 20's I owned a 16' Starcraft closed bow runabout in Burlington, VT. Took a friend skiing in the outer bay of Mallet's Bay near Porter's Point and she fell and lost her engagement ring and a diamond earing. The water was rough and it was windy so my "crew" and I decided to sink a beer bottle at around the spot and come back the next day. It was about 7' deep. Next day we found the beer bottle and started circling around it outward just with a mask and not even a snorkel. We went down to the bottom as we circled. It wasn't long before I found the diamond ring sitting on the packed sand and my friend found the earing. Unfortunately, we did not find the earing clasp. The owner's fiance bought us a case of beer for our efforts. Incidently, my "crew" was a college student from Cal renting a room in my house - he went on to fly 3 Space Shuttle Missions and also lived on the International Space Station for 6 months. Leroy, if you are reading this (which I doubt) - thanks.

Ah, the good old days...

Twice, actually. First time, I was washing the dinghy and it just slipped off. Never to be found.

Second time, I was test driving a boat for a friend out of state who was going to buy the boat sight unseen... We came in from the test drive, and I checked the oil. As I was washing the oil off my fingers in the water, it slipped off again.

Thankfully, my wife doesn't care. I have bought them from Overstock.com, nothing extrodinary or expensive. Thankfully, I still have my original, and I never wear it!

Never lost my wedding ring...but...I do have a wallet at the bottom of a lake since the late 80's.

Also, around 1984 or so (my HS grad year) I was at the dirt track races and I dropped my class ring under the bleachers. The grass under there was about 8" long and there were thousands upon thousands of beer can tabs. I offered a reward for anyone that found it. Luckily, by sheer luck, right before giving up. I found it.

Last week a guy parked next to us on the beach on the river lost his prescription sunglasses ($250 value) in about 10 ft of water with a mucky bottom and a current. He and about 5-6 kids put on their goggles and were diving/searching for them. I thought "no f'ing way are they are gonna find them". He gave up and about 10 minutes later a kid from the next boat over found them. He gave the kid a $20 bill and he was thrilled.

Not in the lake but...a week after my honeymoon a drive chain broke on the skid steer I was operating. Usually not a hard fix, just replace the link. Pulled the access panel on the side that busted and fished out the chain. At this point I realized I had my ring on and I took it off to put on my key chain. But I had oil on my hands and it slipped out of my grasp and thru the access panel into the resevoir. I couldn't leave it there because it would eventually get ground up by the gears...So I learned how to disassemble the gear housing of a Gehl skid steer, and that it takes the better part of 6 hours to take apart and reassemble. I found the ring and got paid for the time! But it was nerve wracking, being newly married and all.

So, we are on a little wakeboard boat and my friend's wife wanted to board so he told her to take off her multiple carat diamond ring first. Of course she said no because it can't fall off. After much debate she gave in to shut him up and sat on the edge of the boat and started to remove the ring. Of course he said something like "what the F^%&^% are you doing? Get inside the boat to do that"! After it dropped in the fast moving river she felt kind of dumb.

Did I mention this is his now ex-wife?
