I was out fishing with my wife and a large swell from a bigger boat broke over the swim platform of my 05 270 Amberjack, and water entered the cockpit under the cockpit door. The water drained out very quickly so i didnt thing anything of it. When we got back to the dock there was a gallon of water in the bilge. My bilge has always been dry, no water at all, so when i seen this i was very upset.

I climbed into the engine compartment and had my wife secure the hatch. Upon inspection on the rubber seal that is on the engine compartment hatch. I found it doesn't have a very good seal. I have 4 or 5 spots where i can see light shining thru.

Anybody else experience this?

Are you for REAL ??.
The bilge pump can't pickup that amount of water up

I don't think I'd climb into the engine room hoping that after she closed the hatch that my wife would actually re-open it.

No doubt! Not to mention that on my 340DA V-Drives she would have to put me down there in pieces to get the hatch closed.

She wouldn't have a problem with that as long as she didn't get any mess on her clothes or shoes.

Yours is a very common occurrence. As boats age, the rubber gaskets/weather stripping shrinks. There is no way to avoid it unless you replace the gasket every 3-4 years.

Nice to hear from someone else with an 05 Amberjack! I've only had my boat a couple of months and with the weather in my neck of the woods being pretty lousy most of the time, I have only enjoyed her on two small trips. I love the boat but, even when I bought it I felt the transom opening, although stylish was a little impractical on a boat this size. On the sea trial I had a Volvo engineer conducting WOT tests while the salesperson helmed. He called for full throttle and his clipboard with all the previous data slipped off the seat, skated straight under the door and down to Davey Jones locker! I'm also a little concerned how the boat would deal with any sort of large, short wave length followiing sea! Would the transom opening let in more water than the scuppers can deal with?

My Amberjack's door opens outwards (not sure about your's) so if it were already open and a large wave were to flow in, it would be able to flow back out of the door (along with the scuppers). Also, since the door opens outward, it would be more likely to be slammed shut as the wave flowed into the cockpit (blocking some water)but if water were to enter, then try to flow back out it would actually push the door open, allowing the water to exit more freely.

Most scuppers (I've got two on each stern corner) will not handle any large amount of water very quickly - an open floor level door sure would!
