How many boaters go wide open speed for more than a few minutes on say a boat like mine...???
i know they say to open up the car once in a while to clean it out etc, does the same go for a boat....??

I did it 3 times last summer. About 30 seconds or so each. I have owned my boat 2.5 years now, and I still have no idea how fast she really is. She's been above 42 still gaining speed all 3 times. Fast enough for me...

42 is fast enough..not sure if thats safe for me.maybe 35

I run WOT a few times a season to confirm my RPMs are still in spec and my top MPH is normal. I would not run WOT for more than a few minutes personally.

I would be happy with 35-38 WOT. can only get to about 27 4100 rpm but changing props so we will see come spring:thumbsup:

I'll run mine up to 4800 rpm (not WOT for a 2006 350 Mag) for a few miles a couple of times during the summer. Most of my cruising is done at 3500 to 3650, plus with electronic controlled fuel and ignition systems, I'm not sure if it really is necessary to firewall the throttles all that frequently. I will say, that 4800 really brings a silly smile on my face.

Thanks .....My engine tags list a 4400-4800 max rated speed, although the survey reports it attained a 5200 rpm via the vessels tachometer during the survey.
Note: To verify tach accuracy.
is one of the the things to fix according to the survey report...

I usually take it to WOT (about 4500 RPM) everytime I go out to make sure all is well. I always use WOT to get on plane and then back off after a few minutes.

Asked my mechanic about it, and he said they are designed to operate at any throttle speed for as long as needed. No problems with running all day at WOT (according to him), other than fuel consumption. He has been a boat mechanic for over 30 years and an authorized Sea Ray mechanic as well. So he has my trust.

Personally, I like the feeling of a boat this size skippin along at 35 mph.

I seldom run my car at WOT , unless I want to find myself at 150 mph. Short bursts seem to clean it out though.

Your mechanic is an idiot.

Back in the day of leaded gasoline, ignition points and carburators a combustion chamber would soon cake up with deposits and such from just putsing around. Opening her up now and then would clear out alot of these deposits but not all.

Todays fuels are certainly alot cleaner and leave very little deposits behind. And when combined with fuel injection like your boat I don't think opening her up to clean things out is as effective as it was back when since there isn't much to clean out (providing your engines are runing with out issues).

On the other hand one like me certainly does like to turn the horses loose now and then just to make sure there all there. ...Ron

I like that

4-Suns ... OMG. I agree that mech is an idiot. Because these boat engines just don't have the oil capacity to run at rated for long periods. With no oil cooler that 5-7 quarts would be cooking for sure after awhile. ...Ron

I run my girls at WOT for 30 to 40mins with no ill effect.. If they are going to self destruct. They're going to do it at lower RPM's also. !!. :smt001. Heres the girls that have NEVER been apart in 22yrs.. :smt038

The stresses on the components in an engine go up with rpm and load. I agree with Gary that the said mechanic is an idiot.

Boat engines are typically more robust than their auto counterparts, but they are not invincible. Gel coat is designed to stand up to the effects of sun and the weather, but a boat that is waxed and has limited exposure to the sun will have nicer, longer lasting gel coat.

Wayne, be careful. Just because those motors have not come apart, doesn't mean they won't.

I run mine to WOT occasionally to verify rpm, oil pressure, speed, etc., but that takes less than a minute.

Nice to hear from you, Gary.

Well with that way of thinking. If the dog didn't stop to take a sh*t he would of caught the rabbit then ?? . I'm not worried about the girls.. They still hold 40psi oil pressure all day long.:smt038

If she's good she'll go if she ain't she'll blow is the old saying. The problem I see is the blow can go right through the bottom of your boat. To each his own. The engines on the boat running at WOT for long periods of time ( more than a few minutes) is asking for trouble in my estimate.

The way I see it, if WOT were a no extra strain proposition, we'd all run everywhere instead of walking.

I rarely go WOT. As others have said, only periodically as a systems check.

My 330 tops out at 35 or so.
