Should get some mileage out of this one...

Ok my shifter and throttle KNOBS have like a plastic coating thats peeling off. I cant get it all off and it annoys the heck out of me ... WTF...

So who's been RUBBING my knobs and how do i get the remaining plastic spooge off ?

Do i need the sppoge ? Is it like the anti pitting plastic ?

I really dont want to replace them. We kind of bonded,,,,

Any thoughts ...

Rob

I have a few thoughts Rob....btw you do know your wife was at the helm while you were napping at Watch Hill don't you???

I suffer from the same affliction so I'll be curious to see what responses you get. I'm thinking factory "knob condoms" wearing off. Does this mean we're not practicing "safe boating" now? :smt043

Rob - I have the same issue. Its like a clear coat. Your boat is aging buddy!

Can you just re-coat them with something? Or better yet, peel the knobs out and make some nice wooden ones to go back in?

Trust me i know old !!!! Atleast I know im not the only one bothered by it...

Ill try Brians ( Bmac ) idea... ( i dont think she'll do it though )

Rob, with the right motivation she will...can you say 48DA?

Okay - this post helps. I have been bugged with my shift knobs plastic coming off as well. Is there a support group for folks like us. I was going to get new ones. But if we could get the coating off that would be great. Do we need to wear white gloves?

Rob, We have the same issue with our 48. Interesting, it is only the shifters and not the throttles.

It is a plastic coating so I doubt they can be re-sprayed with a clear coat. Let me know what you find out.

"it is only the shifters and not the throttles"

Yes - why is that? Looks like the same knob!!!

I had to replace a shift lever because every time I would reach up to open the center glass panel, I'd catch my shirt tail on it and ended up bending the port one. It was about $55 on line. I don't know if yours are the same as mine.

I would guess that the shifter gets used harder - because of docking. Whereas the throttle would normally be used gentler - but, then the throttle gets more attention throughout it's life, too.

Would acetone hurt that gold coloring? If not, try removing the plastic coating with it. Once it's off, would there be any harm in using automotive clearcoat out of a rattle can on it?

Course, I guess you could always sand it off - it would more than likely scratch the gold, but that would give you the opportunity to re-paint it any color you wanted.

Just some ideas - I've never done it, but upon first thoughts I don't see why you couldn't?
