185 Sport Thread....

In what location does everyone attach their fenders? I have ended up using the rear support for the bimini and the front attachment point for the bimini strap. That puts the fenders where I want them but is a tad bit annoying.

We have found what works best for us is bow arm handle, aft arm handle, and mid cleat.

I have a brand new great lakes bimini top for a 185 with a tower.... It is brand new still in the packing from sea ray.... Will save someone a ton of cash if they are interested in it. If you would like pics of the top please send me a pm or an e-mail at jasond817@hotmail.com Thanks!!!!!!!

Hey everyone,

I have finally had a chance to upload a picture of our new 2009 Sea Ray 185 Sport. I love the boat and cant wait for this upcoming weekend to go out on it again.

Just a heads up to you 185 guys, I have some spare trailer light bulbs from when I had my '01 185. It was on a Shoreland'r trailer. I've got the amber and red sealed clearance bulbs, let me know if anyone can use them.

I have that exact trailor and may be able to use them since my trailor has been exposed to salt and need a re-hauling

Two days ago I purchased a 2008 185 Sport with only 15 hours on it.

Issue: While filling the gas tank, the gas pump did not stop and a little gas overflowed. I smelled gas but didn't think much of it. While out on the lake, the gas smell was overwhelming at times. When I looked at the bottom of the engine bay, I notice some water that was milky looking and a very heavy smell of gas. This milky looking water was also in the ski storage area.

Once home, I drained the milky water and scrubbed the ski storage area to get rid of the gas smell.

Questions:
1. Did the overflow from filling the gas tank cause gas to enter the engine bay? If yes, how did that happen?

2. How do I get rid of the gas smell in the engine bay? It's not easy to get in there to scrub.

First off, congrads on the new boat. With only 15hrs on it, your boat is basically new and will have alot of new boat issues. Spilling gas on the outside of your boat will not cause it to spill on the inside, now a leak in your fill hose will. I lift the sunpad while filling up so I can see how far I have to the top and make sure everything is ok inside.

The milky water is normal for a new boat. Even the water in the ski locker. One design flaw I noticed in the 185s is that the drain to the ski locker is even with the bottom of the boat. In my opinion it should be higher. The first week we had our boat, some fiberglas clogged the ski locker drain, then clogged the pump. :smt013

Thanks and sorry to hear about your issue.
I will definitely flip the sunpad and watch while I gas up next time. How do I rid the engine compartment of the gas smell? The smell is driving my wife crazy! :smt100 Also, the drain ski locker plug doesn’t fit because the whole is not large enough. It looks like some coating ran into the whole and made it smaller. I assume I should take the boat to the dealer to fix under the warranty?

Cheers, Mike

BeerMike, definitely look into the problem. You may have a gas leak somewhere. I'm not sure of your boating experience. Just for safety's sake you definitely do not want fuel vapor in the bilge. It is extremely dangerous.

I decide to look over the fuel lines and the tank with a fine tooth comb to find the leak. I started with all the hoses and they looked fine. So I started looking the the gas tank. I found a strange looking mark or hole. See the pictures below. I took a wood skewer and put in in the hole, pulled it out and it has covered with fuel.

This explains why after I filled the tank, there was fuel in the bilge. Now it's trying to figure out how to seal it well enough for the ride over to the dealer to fix or replace the tank.

Is there a plug that should be in that hole? Thanks to everyone for the help with this issue.

Wow, that's bit dangerous! Good work finding it. I'd put duct tape over the hole for the ride to the dealer. I'd leave the engine hatch off with no cover on the boat as well.

Hello all,
I am new to the forum having just purchased a 2006 Sea Ray 185 Sport 4.3. I have been reading through the archives looking for information on trim tabs and have gotten a lot of info. I have one question I have not found the answer to though.

I am planning on getting trim tabs for my 185 but I am debating over getting Smart Tabs or Hydraulic Tabs. The Hydraulic tabs have the benifit of allowing me to level the boat and give me more flexibility however one of the major reasons I am getting trim tabs is to stop the wandering tenancy of the boat while not on plane. My question is will the traditional tabs stop the wandering as well as the Smart Tabs?

Thanks Chris

I have the same boat. The wandering aspect is just inherent in the planing hull's design. The boat is intended to plane. That's why the boat's ride is rock solid when the boat is planing. Did you notice how the 185 stays so stable in turns? Don't worry about the wandering. The more you drive the boat the more you will get used to it and the wandering won't seem so bad.

I dont think trim tabs are going to make a major differance. My last boat was a lot lighter than my Sea Ray and it would wander around quite a bit, even after I added my trim tabs. Once on plane, the tabs did a great job of leveling the boat or adjusting the bow to match the conditions of the water.
If you are hoping to add tabs to help with the steering, i believe you are going to be dissapointed. The better option would be to learn to not over correct the steering and just make small adjustments. Once you get the hang of it, you will have your boat tracking straight without even thinking about it.

Thanks for the feed back. Actually the main reason I am getting trim tabs is to be able to trim the boat for different conditions. The elimination of wandering was a minor point. I am sure I will get used to the wandering. I should get a lot of practice since where I boat there are a lot of no wake zones.

Thanks Chris
