Tiara used to employ 800 people and build 450 or so boats per year. I'm not sure how many boats they will build this year although they have 5 on the line right now. Most of the staff has been laid off and they bring people back to complete boats as they are sold. Not a good situation. Last night they made news with a plan to hire 1000 workers over 5 years. They are teaming up with a wind generating company to build composite material wind turbine blades. Word on the street is they will be hiring tool and die makers to build the tools to make the blades. Dave Slikker, CEO, said, "We build boats out of composites. It makes sense to use our people and our factory to do this. It is not a change of our core direction. We will continue to build fine boats." Tiara just introduced two new boat designs, a 39 Express and a big convertable for off shore fishing. The wind company has a different name but will occupy space in the Holland, Michigan factory which is brand new.

Sounds like a smart business decision, keep your skilled employees.

Every Mfg of Boats is in bad shape. Glad to see they are finding ways to keep people working. I think the boat industry is going to take some time recovering.

:smt043:smt043:smt043 Unfortunately they already are :smt009

What, you don’t think they would add to the beauty of Nantucket Sound? :smt009

I rest my case.

But they will make for some new navigational hazards which will require us to update all our electronic charts. :smt101

another company sucking at the government teat. Thank God for Obama tilting at windmills.

Is every little thing political to you? Jesus Frank your a smart guy, and i listen to your sound boating advice and experience, but it's getting old. I'm sure you'll have something to say about how i'm a idiot democrat but honestly all political affiliations aside it's old. I guess this thread needs to be move to the holding tank now.

I like wind turbines. We have several wind farms in Iowa. I don't think they're ugly at all. Quite the contrary.

I also applaud Dave Slikker for being creative and keeping his firm alive, and finding ways of employing as many as he can while hopefully making a profit.

We have a wind turbine blade manufacturer nearby and it's really something to see the very long blades wind their way through the intersections of our small town.

It has also been entertaining to listen to my southern Cape Cod friends debate the pros & cons of the proposed Nantucket wind farm. IMO wind turbines are majestic and certainly better than another coal-fired or gas-fired generating plant.

I actually like wind farms... I've seen several over in Europe and they are an engineering marvel IMO. There are a few in Atlantic City, NJ as well and they are pretty cool. I don't know what the big deal is about the Nantucket people. They've talked about putting a big wind farm off the coast of Virginia (like 20 miles) and people were bitching about it. You wouldn't even be able to see it from shore. I guess the deal was it killed birds. Big whoopie.

However, regardless if I agree or not with windmills and the fact it is a good business decision for Tiara to make them, I have to poke fun at Tiara to keep up my reputation.

If Tiara makes them, they will stop looking like the sleek aerodynamic machines they are and start looking like suppositories on a Popsicle stick.

Cape Winds proposed site is right in the middle of a very heavy recreational / commercial boating area, it’s not the same as putting a wind farm in the middle of a corn field or off shore were you can't see it.

You know you will have one some day Gary, maybe even a Tiara boat and wind turbine too. It's that magical TE that causes you to obsess on the brand.

Layed off 850 boat builders, and now adding 1000 wind turbine jobs. That's the kind of change people voted for. Yes this is political, and I like the boats better.

Uhhh. Because it is political. When other people get their filthy, greedy hands out of my pocket, then I won't give a darn what they do. But as long as taxes is the single largest part of my expenses...

I hope Tiara didn't build this one! Wow!
