Hey gang, we took a week at Powell over the Memorial holiday. I thought i might share a few pictures.

For those who have not been there, the white waterline you see represents about 70 vertical feet. That should help with the scale.

Here is L'eau Ambition comfortably at rest just past the mouth of the San Juan (about 60 miles uplake):

And here is the obligatory Honda generator pic. But don't worry he only starts it in the bilge or in the cabin with all the hatches closed. The boat on the far shore is a Bayliner 28 or 30. The use of telephoto made it appear closer than it was.

Here comes some weather. We got plenty of rain and worse, quite a bit of wind in the early parts of the trip. Nothing like 40+ mph winds while you are at anchor at 2 am.

Here's a few more:

"Hey Dad, is Mommy starting the boat?"

"Yes son, and she's hauling the anchor, too. How fast can you swim?"

A place for everything:

More pictures to come soon!

Thanks Nicky! It was a great trip. The area is very beautiful and very unique. The scale is hard to demonstrate in pictures, but that 70 foot waterline sure helps. It is amazing to get within a few feet of a vertical wall that reaches over 400 feet and have the depthfinder show another 400 feet.

Also, the water is quite clear and has a bit of a green tint to it. Even during the most crowded times, you can still get away from everyone else.

Anyway, here are some more:

This is one of the very narrow passes to get to the docks for Rainbow Bridge:

Here is a view of the depthfinder. Like my sophisticated Lake Powell chart? Fancy, eh?

This is a spot in Reflection Canyon (56 miles to the mouth of the canyon, and about a mile back in). The stars at night were unbelievable before the moon rose. The silence at night can be amazing, too. Often, if you are still, you hear absolutely nothing:

In this particular instance we were attempting to dig to China:

Here is another view of the same beach:

This storm shadowed us one day as we headed to Dangling Rope Marina (only accessible by water, all supplies go both directions by barge approximately 40 miles). I couldn't bring myself to put up all the side curtains, so I leaned on the throttles a bit (3400rpm) and we were able to stay ahead of it until it veered off our course.

This is in the main channel about 30 miles uplake during a holiday week. The lack of congestion on Powell is awesome.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing....the first picture with the boat pulled up to shore in the distance compared to the waterline really illistrates how expansive of an area it is. BTW - I hope you filled in the hole after you dug to China!

I notice all the gas cans on swim platforms, is that pretty common out there? Is it for extended cursing or just lack of marinas?

Awesome Pics, Keokie. Thanks for sharing. I've wanted to go there and rent a house boat ever since I saw a piece about it on the Travel channel. Some day.

Oh my gosh, your pictures are great Keokie. I was in many of the exact places you show in your photos a year ago on a friend's boat, but my pics were sad in comparison. We were also there about a week. You're right, the place is just awe inspiring. I'm used to going into a creek and dropping the anchor about anywhere around Charleston, but at Powell, the problem is finding anywhere shallow enough to anchor. I'd really like to go back for a CSR rendezvous on Powell. It looks like the water is up a good bit from last year.

Wow, thanks for sharing! Looks like an awesome spot.

Lake Powell is one of my favorite spots on the planet. I sold my houseboat last week and this will be the first time in 12 years I haven't spent a couple of weeks on the lake. It looks lile the pictures were between MM59 and the Hole in the Wall area.

On a side note, the Sea Ray dealer in Grand Junction, formally Sunrise now MMax, used to be one of the largest dealers in the country. Interesting as Grand Junction is very inland. They sold lots of Sea Rays to Powell boaters. The owner that got bought out by MM has a big house boat down there you've probably seen. The Funtastic. Side note II, if you remember when there was the big fire at Bullfrog that sank the fuel dock it was my boat.

Be safe.

Boulder GT3,

You are very close about the location of the pictures. The ones at anchor are just inside the San Juan, and inside Reflection Canyon.

My boat was originally purchased from the MM in Grand Junction. That's how it got 496's from the factory. It was a special "high altitude package." As far as I know, only two 310's got factory 496's.

I do very much remember hearing about the fire at Bullfrog. It made the Phoenix news. Never heard the specifics, though.

The gas can is for the generator my dad carries. Fuel is relatively scarce, but our boats' capacity is enough when managed properly.

Anyway, here are a few more:

Great photos but what's up with having so many of them with that old Bayliner in them...?

do you have a time in mind, when you mignt consider getting togeather?

Boulder GT3;our boat is a old powell boat too and still has the dealer plate on it from Grand Mesa Marine in grand junction

Fantastick photos...thanks for sharing. Looks like "Time Off" is "booking" What was he running...close to 50?

Sadler;229984 do you have a time in mind said:
I'm pretty far away, and I don't have a truck/trailer to pull my boat. But, my intention is to remedy the later, and make the far away an asset, so as to see lots as I cross the country. So, as soon as I can. The friends I was on Powell with last year both pulled their boats from the Carolinas, so I won't be trying something outrageous. I've been pricing trucks this past week, and the trailer is picked out. I'd say 10-12 months is not out of the question for me. It'd be a great rendezvous--one to remember for a long time.

Sorry for the long timeline....:smt089

And in case you can't get enough photos of this magical place, here are a some of mine from last year--all a repost from last year. They show us making our way from Albuquerque, NM trailering the boats to Lake Powell. I'm warning you--nowhere near as good as Keokie's, so don't waste your time looking unless you really want some other views; also, be forewarned not a single Sea Ray in any photo. The sights just coming to Lake Powell from NM and Arizona were also pretty amazing to me, and few are included here:

After looking at these pictures as well as some more on line, this place intrigues me. It would be worth cutting back for a while in order to go and see this first hand. If a rondezvous were to be I'd surely try to swing it.
