exhaust help????

i need help trying to figure out who the exhaust is supposed to be set up on my 77 30 ft sea ray hardtop. the mufflers i took off were rotten and not made anymore . i dont understand how the exhaust box works. any answers or help would be great:smt021

i forgot to load them with post. the exhaust is below the waterline but no lift nufflers?? dont understand

Why do you "need" mufflers? Can't you just go with straight exhaust? wouldn't that sound better? or are you after quiet?

I'm just asking, as I don't know the answer.

i dont really wat a loud boat anymore. did that for years. not that i dont like things loud . i just want this one quiet.

there are no flappers where the exahust exits. i am trying to find how it was done from the factory. the mufflers i had have a weird offset not straight through.

Sorry about that. I'm not familiar with that set-up. Will this need to be custom made?

I have 1979 SRV 300 . My exhaust pipes run flat and parrallel to the water line. They end at the box you show in your photo which is actually above the water line. Under the hull you should see that box indent into the hull. On the gunnel side of the hull you should have a small slotted vent type cover that relieves back pressure while the engine is idling. My straight setup with the original configuration is quiet at the dock and underway.

do you have any picks of this vent. ? what keeps water from comming back up the pipe. the exhaust i took off was rotten all the way up to the risers.. have you had any problems with the box leaking.?

Hi Mike you and I need to talk. We have the same boat.

This is a complicated issue but the bottom line is the factory exhaust boxes are trouble. Very bad idea to make the exhaust system literally part of the hull. They stopped it after only a few years due to lots of troubles.

My info comes to me from a Sea Ray technician at their headquarters in Knoxville who has worked for SR since 1975 and actually worked on the line that built our boats.

The exhaust box itself is not structural. These were glassed in after the hull was built. They are basically all just built in place and nonstandard. They invite leakage into the boxed in area outboard of the stringers, and had a back pressure problem that necessitated a factory recall/fix that put a "blow out" panel in, supposedly to avoid engine damage from extremes of back pressure. With the original setup you also run a higher risk of water ingestion into the engines from backing down or at anchor/dockside with waves slapping the hull.

I can show you before and after pictures of what I did which was to glass over the underwater exhaust and run the exhaust thru the transom. I included an internal check valve as an additional protection against ingestion of water.

I have a quieter and safer boat now. It is much quieter than the burbling rumble I had before. I can go over the exhaust parts I used with you.

Once I put some info together for you (assuming you are interested) I can also post to the forum for others.

By the way do you have straight inboards with your 454's or outdrives ?
