Wildwood Trip

We are in the early stage of planning a cruis to Cape and Wildwood, I'm Familiar with Cape may and where to stay, Not sure about Wildwood. On the chart I see the ICw to Wildwood, any local info I need to Know and the best place to stay. Thanks Bob
 
Doozie, I would recommend Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood. It's my home port and it's right on the ICW about 15 minutes from Cape May. It's a well kept newer marina with everything you need in walking distance. Mark

I agree with Mark 100%. Schooner Island is in a great spot by water, it's easy to get to, it's very well kept with nice floating docks, the people are nice, it has a pool, they take (and honor) reservations. Sea Ray Mark is a nice guy to boot! The only downside is that it is a bit of a hike to the beach, and then once you get to the beach, it's a bit of a hike to the ocean! Bring your bikes!
 
Festivus is right (he's a nice guy too, with a really nice boat) it is a long walk but not nearly as far as the walk in Cape May.The marina has bikes you can use for free I'm just not sure if they let transients use them or if you have to be a slip holder. Mark
 
I've used the bikes as a transient but that was a few years back and their policy may have changed.
 
Thanks All, Plan is to spend a couple days in Cape May and Couple in Wildwood. I take that the trip from cape May to Wildwood is straightforward. Now we need to pick the days. Bob
 
The best days to travel there are when the tide is maximum ebb on the Delaware Bay coupled with a nice SE wind at like 20+ knots. Traveling home should be done with tide is at maximum flow and the winds are out of the NW.
 
Ac, would be nice, but we have a big get togetherat Tolchester that weekend. Bob
 
I know, Ive been there done that on a trip Ocean City a few years back, we took a 7 hour trip and turned into like a 14 hour day, Not Fun. Bob

You can call Enterprise and set up a car rental while you're there. They'll come to the marina and get you. They are familiar with this process at marinas. We did that in Ocean City, NJ two years ago and it worked out great. I also have a friend from our marina (James are you lurking???) who makes an annual pilgrimage to Schooner Island and always rents a car. So for as little as $35/day you can come and go as you please.

If we (including kids 4 & 12) decide to take a trip to Wildwood, how long do you guys think we should plan on staying there? I was thinking on taking a week, but based on all the info I see about the area it sounds like 3-4 days should be enough. would you recommend any other places along the way?

Alex, I think 3-4 days would be about right for Wildwood. The only other places I can think of that would be good for a family with kids would be Morrisons on LBI and South Jersey Marina in Cape May. From Morrisons you can walk to the beach or the amusement park and in Cape May you would need to take a cab from the marina to get down town but once you"re there you'll have plenty of options to keep everyone happy. I'd recommend renting some bikes and cruising around. If you make it to Wildwood let me know. I'll give you the low down on what to do and where to go. Mark
 
Can you guys give me some suggestions on the route to take. I'm thinking BI to AC (via Absecon Inlet) for a lunch stop. Then from AC (open ocean) to Jenkins Channel. From there ICW to the Schooners. I've read in Waterways Guide that Hereford Inlet is not the best approach for those without local knowledge.

Also, I'm familiar with ICW from BI to AC, but never been south of AC. Are there any tricky spots I need to be aware if I have to take ICW in case if ocean is too rough?

Your advice is appreaciated.

Alex, I would recommend after having lunch in AC (Trump Marina or The Flying Cloud) go back out into the ocean head down to the Cape May inlet. Once inside you do have to back track north on the ICW but it's a short run to Schooners. I would only run the inside down from AC if I had to. If the tide is low the water is very short especially in North Wildwood. Also, don't even think about Hereford inlet. Mark

Absecon is an extremely simple and well marked inlet complete with jetty. You can't really mess up. I've never headed SOUTH from that inlet, only north. But if you go out to the marker before you head down you should be fine. I've heard that Cape May Inlet is also very easy to find an negotiate. As Mark said, avoid Heresford unless you're in a jet ski.
 
Thanks for great info Mark and Ron. I agree that Absecon is very simple and very pleasant. Since the Cape May inlet is the way to go, now you made me think that I might as well add Cape May as one of the stops for our trip. I'll do some research, but can you give me some quick tips on some things to see, to do in CM? How much time do you think I should allow for CM, is 1 day enough?
