BR to Bahamas

All great points Chad. I really like.

Safe Seas being a major point. As it has been said before you can run into problems anywhere if you do not respect the seas. I understand totally about the weather coming up. That is one of the reason I would only do the Miami/Bimini (50+-) trip. That is a two hour run for me.

What are your credentials/experiences that give you credibility to advise the blue water boaters about safety in open seas from the inland mountains? Have you had your boat off shore with no land in sight? Just askin.

I think that statement pretty much answers my last question.

Not sure about your question. Where have I ever tried to advise blue water boaters? I've had many years of experience in all kinds of water.

What do you mean by your second comment? How does it answer your last question?

Well, Chuck, the Bahamas crossing couldn't be any worse than our southerly run across Lake Moultrie?? Right??

Had that been a Bahamas crossing we would have turned around when we left the canal. It would have been one of those ongoing planning thing I was talking about.:thumbsup:

Nah, just plan on renting a canbote.
:lol::smt043:lol::smt043
I think water would have been coming over the deck like in that aircraft carrier video somebody posted the other day.
:lol::smt043:lol::smt043

What were those 4+ short chop seas.

I often Google locations that other boaters mention. SeaRide and Chuck1 mentioned Lake Moultrie so I thought I would check it out. Looks like more than water might end up on the deck of that canbote. OHHHH MANNNN Look at my introduction. Jeeppers H Chritmas, WTF. I wouldn't boat there if I was carrying depth charges and had a freeboard of 10'. I don't know how you guys do it. Is there a gator in every drop a water down there?

Might want to considering making sure the thong is secure, It might be the gators cocktail hour (Is that a pun?) and they might be serving Hors D'Oeuvres :huh: :smt043:lol::smt043

Woody, don't sell your self short. The Great Lakes are like an inland sea. Probably worse than the ocean at times. I've boated both, and never in 15+ years of crossing the gulf stream was I ever, to scared to turn the boat around, like on lake Michigan one trip. Generally in bad seas it's a timing thing to get turned around. On Lake Michigan once, I literally was to affraid to turn around. The waves were steep, choppy, and short duration. I was running a 30 foot conv. I backed the boat for something like 10 miles. I kept the bow into the waves and backed down as a wave would pass under me. Took all night, and lucky where I wanted to go was behind me. Extreme story but true.

Hey those are just our local garbage disposals. :lol::smt043:lol: We don't want old died arms just laying around now do we.

I Googled alligators. I didn't know that they had such a large range. Sounds like they are pretty well protected by regulation too. I guess it's just one more thing to learn about the area in which you boat but it sure gives me the creeps.

Alligators are fine, just in lakes and ponds and some streams and rivers but not in salt (atleast I've not seen any)

You leave them alone they leave you alone. I need to post my pictures of Alligator alley which is I75 where it goes across the bottom of the state across the everglades. I stopped and took pictures one time, thousands of them along the road down there.

This thread has been hi-jacked!

to answer the initial ?.....no I did not take my BR to the Bahamas but I want to and plan to. I will be sure to use this forum when I start my planning and will be sure to take lost of pictures!

I live on salt to brackish water and have watched them swim under my dock with the flow of the water. You should be out at night on a fairly large body of water with a light and shine it across the surface and see all of those shiny spots at the surface, gator eyes. They really don't bother people that much, no I would probably not swim in their water too much but I am not scared of them, I do have great respect for them. :grin:

The Cubans have been doing this for years on doors and home made rafts.

Seeing a picture like that has got to tell you how thankfull we should all be for living where we do instead of were they do. The other message I see is for the moaners and groaners: If you don't like the way things are then do something to change it.

A good friend of mine made the crossing 2 years ago in a new Monterey 268 SS bowrider. He had no problems at all, you just have to watch the weather very carefully , and allow plenty of time in case the weather turns bad.

Advising a 24’ open bow boater:

“Taradise,
I've tried to stay out of this one, get ready to for a bunch of BS. Some people don't understand the concept of planing and think you would go out in 6' seas or when the weather is changing. With the right training, planning, weather and group not a problem.”

You called the comments from experienced off-shore boaters a bunch of BS.

You asked, “What were you doing out in 8 footers???” I don’t think anyone would intentionally head out in 8 footers even in a 48DB. If you had much experience with ocean boating you would know that 8 footers could whip up off shore without much warning

So, back to Woody’s original question. Did you do it? You never said you did. You said you would.

We’ve heard it before on this site, one should not give advise about something they have not experienced or have no first hand knowledge. I can’t determine if you are offering your advise out of speculation or experience. Can you please clarify. You may be the only one in 8 pages that actually did the trip and that would be helpful for Woody and all the readers.
